We don't normally report breaking news here at TechSource, but the
non-disclosure act expired at midnight, and we want to alert librarians to the
changes they'll be seeing when they arrive at work Monday morning. The rumors
you've been hearing are true. At the ACRL Conference in Baltimore this morning,
Google announced it has purchased OCLC and all of its holdings.
Some changes will be more immediate than others, including cosmetic changes you
can already see if you visit sites such as WorldCat and FirstSearch. The OCLC
home page began redirecting to oclc.google.com late last night, and new logos
are beginning to appear online. There weren't many details in the announcement
and the terms have not been disclosed yet, but here's what we know so far.
- As of today, WorldCat has been renamed "Google Library," and every work ever
published is now available for full-text searching in the system. Publishers
are already crying foul and their lawyers are furiously filing lawsuits, but
our reading of copyright law and the fact that Google has added the name
"library" to the product means the lawsuits will ultimately fail.

OCLC and Google to Exchange Data, Link Digitized Books to WorldCat
<
http://www.oclc.org/us/en/news/releases/200811.htm>
DUBLIN, Ohio, USA, 19 May 2008OCLC and Google Inc. have signed an agreement to
exchange data that will facilitate the discovery of library collections through
Google search services.
Under terms of the agreement, OCLC member libraries participating in the Google
Book Search program, which makes the full text of more than one million books
searchable, may share their WorldCat-derived MARC records with Google to better
facilitate discovery of library collections through Google.
Google will link from Google Book Search to WorldCat.org, which will drive
traffic to library OPACs and other library services. Google will share data and
links to digitized books with OCLC, which will make it possible for OCLC to
represent the digitized collections of OCLC member libraries in WorldCat.
"This agreement will directly support the interests of OCLC's participating
libraries by broadening access to library collections and services by making
them more widely available on the Web," said Jay Jordan, OCLC President and
CEO. "We are pleased to partner with Google in pursuit of our mission to
connect people to knowledge through international library cooperation."
WorldCat metadata will be made available to Google directly from OCLC or
through member libraries participating in the Google Book Search program.
Google recently released an API that provides links to books in Google Book
Search using ISBNs, LCCNs and OCLC numbers. This API allows WorldCat.org users
to link to some books that Google has scanned through a Get It link. The link
works both ways. If a user finds a book in Google Book Search, a link can often
be tracked back to local libraries through WorldCat.org.
The new agreement enables OCLC to create MARC records describing the Google
digitized books from OCLC member libraries and to link to them. These linking
arrangements should help drive more traffic to libraries, both online and in
person.
"This agreement will help libraries, Google and OCLC provide content that
searchers want, at the point of needthrough the Web," said Chip Nilges, Vice
President, OCLC Business Development. "It will help increase the visibility of
libraries through Web searches, and will facilitate access to libraries
collections from Google or WorldCat.org."

Google recently released a book viewability API that provides links to books in
Google Book Search using ISBNs, LCCNs, and OCLC numbers. Basically (without
going into a bunch of code stuff that I dont really understand), this API
allows other organizations to link to books that Google has scanned (and will
scan) based on data that is pushed/pulled automatically back and forth between
the requesting site and Google.
[BTW... You now know the ugly truth: I am not a programmer; see code stuff and
pushed/pulled above]
The upshot of all this, though, is that sites like WorldCat.org can provide a
link back to Google Books. Sometimes that will mean the full text of the book,
sometimes not. For example, Cory Doctorows great novel, Down and Out in the
Magic Kingdom, is available in full. So the WorldCat.org page for that book
shows a link under Get it to View Item Online (Google Books). This takes you to
the Google Books page for that work and the full text.

OCLC Project Opens WorldCat Records to Google
by Barbara Quint
Posted On October 27, 2003 Information Today
<
http://newsbreaks.infotoday.com/nbreader.asp?ArticleID=16592>
OCLC has announced to its library members that it will begin testing the
opening of WorldCat records to Google access. The project will extract a 2
million record subset from the more than 53 million records in the WorldCat
database. The subset will target the most popular and widely available books by
only selecting records with a minimum of 100 libraries holding each item.
Searches on Google will retrieve the records and link through OCLC to library
holdings. The move expands the scope of the Open WorldCat yearlong pilot
project to make library resources available from non-library Web sites and will
"test the effectiveness of Web search engines in guiding users to library-owned
materials." Details for potential participants can be found at
<
http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/pilot/default.htm>
The Google/OCLC connection should be active by mid- to late November.
Over 12,000 academic, public, and school libraries that have contributed
holding records or cataloging information to OCLC will automatically
participate in the program. Corporate library collections will not be assumed
to participate. Libraries may withdraw from the project by notifying regional
service providers. Libraries that are not already part of the pilot project
that want to participate can do so by joining OCLC or an OCLC cooperative and
indicate their desire to join the pilot. Until the launch of the Open WorldCat
pilot, the only end users that could reach WorldCat records were required to
use FirstSearch, most probably in a library setting.
The announcement urged OCLC member libraries to participate in the program in
order to increase the visibility of library collections to current and
potential patrons, as well as enhance the image of libraries to administrators
and funding agencies and improve the quality of material accessible from the
Web. OCLC began testing Web outlets in September 2001 when it opened access to
WorldCat records through links to selected online bookseller sites (e.g.
BookPage.com, ABE Books, Alibris for Libraries, and the Antiquarian
Booksellers' Association of America). Of the four named, only BookPage offers a
"find it at a library" for any and all searches; the rest only show the library
link when the search has failed to find the item in the bookseller's inventory.
Currently, these sites generate some 50,000 library clickthroughs a month.
After users locate an OCLC record citation from a Google search or other Open
WorldCat Web sites, clicking on the citation will link to an interface that
requests a ZIP or postal code, state, or province. This in turn will locate the
nearest libraries holding the item. Country names will suffice for locations
outside the U.S. and Canada. The interface will also link to local library Web
sites for further information, such as connections to the local library's OPAC
catalog or a map with driving directions. OCLC supplies all the links for
libraries and at no extra charge.

OCLC Tightens Links to Google Book Search
by Barbara Quint

Information Today
<
http://newsbreaks.infotoday.com/nbReader.asp?ArticleId=49260>
Librarians and library patrons can expect to see the leading library vendor
bringing Google Book Search (GBS;
http://books.google.com) --on its way to
becoming the worlds largest library--to greater prominence throughout its
offerings. This week, OCLC (www.oclc.org) signed an agreement confirming and
increasing the links between OCLCs WorldCat.org free web service
(www.worldcat.org) and Google Book Search. According to Chip Nilges, vice
president of business development at OCLC, this formalizing of OCLCs "Find in a
Library" relationship with Google Book Search, begun in 2003, marks the first
step in a new initiative. By the end of FY 2009, Nilges expects OCLC to have an
integrated platform "to make WorldCat.org and WorldCat Local the end-user
environment for all licensed electronic products, including NetLibrary,
Electronic Collections Online, and FirstSearch." All the books coming into
Google Book Search from library partners will be linked through WorldCat,
including public domain books available for downloading.
Though the arrangement applies only to books supplied by the library partners
to Google Book Search, not the publisher partners, it already covers more than
1 million books. An OCLC representative confirmed that all the libraries
partnering with Googleboth U.S. and foreignare OCLC member libraries. Google
will have access to MARC records from WorldCat. Under the new agreement, OCLC
agrees to create MARC records for Google Book Search digitized content from
existing records for print content in their system and will create new records
for any content they do not already have. They will also add links to Google
Book Search for existing records. Though no time frame was given for completing
the project, Nilges didnt seem worried. Apparently the task of adding masses of
catalog records is a familiar one. He didnt consider this unusually large.
<snip>
Commenting on the OCLC/Google arrangement, John Wilkin, associate university
librarian for library information technology and technical and access services
at the University of Michigan, says, "OCLCs efforts to bring together
information on digitized content will be significant for users, making it
possible to find in one place what has been digitized, where that content is,
and the relationship of one version to others. Were
excited by this major step forward."
