This post was sent to another list as the answer to a request for sources
of statistics regarding adventure tourism by a graduate student needing
this data for research.

If one samples the literature that seems most prominent in this area, the news
is going to hurt, literally. It seems the most common result of searching
adventure tourism coupled with statistics is a literature regarding injuries
resulting from adventure tourism, written with abacus in hand. These URLs

Now some faculty I have encountered, and I cover all fields in my work, not
just tourism, ask their students not to use the internet and Google in their
research. In this case, this is a wise decision. Google will make your work
so much harder, even if you limit your research to just books, scholar and
government. There Google finds over 1200 sources that answer to a search of
this topic. A database search in databases that focus on or cover tourism
provides a much easier quantity of sources to deal with, forty (40). Just
think how much more quickly your research will be completed using just
databases!!! I recently conducted a search in EBSCO databases for a client who
came to me because he was getting hugely off topic content in his search
results for the topic of Canadians in the nineteenth century working in New
England and in particular New Hampshire textile mills. A malfunction in EBSCO,
when this search was performed in a group of EBSCO databases was causing us to
get highly scientific articles about diseases in places like the Fiji Islands.
I got Academic Search Premier where the problem seemed to be occuring out of
the loop and the results from the remaining databases were few but on target as
three EBSCO history databases, one originally their own, the other two bought
in recent times for ABC-CLIO were among the remaining databases searched.
I now turned to Google Scholar and found this gentleman an excellent collection
of on target sources and the URL for the search so that these could be explored
by him at a later time. There is a steep price to be paid for ignoring Google
search tools in academic research.

Within the last couple of years I had a discussion on the EDTECH list of
H-Net regarding a statement by an education technology professional that
he found Google and Google Scholar more useful in college than the
databases provided at his college. I defended databases and noted that in
his field of linguistics that fewer journals may be indexed by databases
as financial support for publications in specialized fields are more
limited than say business marketing, hence the inferior search results
from databases in his field of study. As the size of Google Scholar and
Google Books grows dramatically, perhaps daily, and with Google containing
the contents without article full text of databases like PUBMED (Medline),
JSTOR, and Science Direct, amongst others, I am not sure that the balance
is not swinging in favor of this gentleman who is employed in the
education technology field and Google over databases. The problem with
EBSCO that I encountered on the New England search was a transient one and
is now corrected, these things happen with computers and Google. Overall
the performance of EBSCO is excellent on a regular basis since my very
special day with them some years ago (see the links below for details) and
expect the roll out of a new version of EBSCO in July. Databases do have
the advantage over Google of being able to perform multistep and complex
searches that leave Google in the dust in the area of search capability
and dealing with results in databases is facilitated by the capability of
emailing or downloading substantial groups of sources in one email post
from the database provider to the clients email account or storage device.

My bottom line for the person doing serious and thorough research: Do not use
databases. Do not use Google. Use BOTH and any other resources one can think
of that are productive for the topic at hand.


By the way, one college other than Temple that I checked has both the
Tourism and Recreation Abstracts segment of CAB from EBSCO as well as
EBSCO's Hospitality and Tourism complete and a trial for a general EBSCO
multisubject database, I know, I looked, but those at institutions that
cannot afford these databases are even more dependent on alternative
sources making Google, Google Scholar, Google Government and Google Books
even more critically important at these colleges.


In addition to the above routes for this information, at institutions with
access, statistical databases can also be attempted for information of this
type as well as subject field appropriate databases that were employed from
EBSCO in the search results sampled in this post. These are some examples of
statistical databases worth considering for this search topic.
