CHILDREN: MISSING ABUSED MURDERED AND EXPLOITED: Kacie Ren Woody

Kacie Ren Woody October 17, 1989 - December 4, 2002

Kacie Ren Woody
<http://missing.puellula.org/Memoriam/Woody.html>

Hometown: Holland, Arkansas, USA

Comments: Kacie Woody vanished from her home in December 2002. Her body
was found a few days later in a storage
facility. She had been apparently murdered by David Fuller of California,
who then committed suicide. Woody appears to have
had an online correspondence with Fuller and seems to have believed that
he was another teenager. Signs of a struggle at her
home indicate that she was unaware that he was coming to see her and
unwilling to go anywhere with him.

IS THIS LOVE WORTH DYING FOR?

"I snickered somewhat when I recently posted a letter from a 16 year old
cheerleader who suggested I was a sexually repressed trogolodyte who was
not in tune with the dangers associated with internet dating. Today I shed
tears for Kacie Renee Woody 13. My daughter will be 13 next year. I still
won't let her go online."

"December 2002 - 13 Year old Kacie Renee Conway met 47 year old David
Fuller on the internet. Kacie lived in rural Arkansas, David in San Diego
County. When Kacie was discovered missing, it was believed she was
kidnapped as she had left without shoes. Kacie Renee Conway was found
dead in a storage unit, along with the body of a California man believed
to have abducted her. UpdateThough I have not directly heard from the
family of Kacie Woody, I have indiectly been asked to remove her picture
from this site. Of course this site serves only one purpose, to warn of
the dangers of internet dating with special emphasis on teens, but hey,
they have the right to ask that the picture (which came from a news
agency) be removed. More power to em. The story however links to the news
site. Since it is factual and was made public the story stays."

Mike Beebe Kicks Off Internet Safety Tour

Searcy - Thursday is the one-year anniversary of a murder that shocked
residents in Faulkner County. 13-year-old Kacie Woody was kidnapped and
killed by a 47-year-old California man who had contacted her over the
Internet.

Since that horrible night, Internet safety has become more of a priority.

The Kacie Woody incident was definitely a wake up call and for the past
year, state and local agencies have stepped up their efforts to educate
people about the dangers of the Internet.

The Internet can be a great educational tool, but ask Special Investigator
Keith Jackson and he'll tell you it is also a very dangerous place. "I go
into these rooms and get hit on about 40 or 50 times in about 30 seconds."

Frye Details How Cyber-Stalker Lured His Prey

Arkansas reporter Cathy Frye was haunted by the story of 13-year-old girl
who was murdered by a man she met on online. The series she wrote about
the case won awards and reached readers with the kind of force she is
always seeking.

(WOMENSENEWS)--When a 13-year-old Arkansas girl died at the hands of a
much older man she met online, reporter Cathy Frye in Little Rock kept
thinking about a series of stories she'd written nearly two years before
about risks children face using the Internet.

She'd written in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that parents, despite their
best efforts, often were clueless when it came to protecting their
children from online predators. She reported what had happened elsewhere
when unscrupulous adults duped and exploited the naive children they met
online.

Now she'd seen it happen so close to home.

"It was the kind of story that haunts you," said Frye, a 34-year-old
reporter with the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Something bad had happened in this living room.
State police investigator Karl Byrd knew it as soon as he saw
13-year-old Kacie Woodys mangled eyeglasses, which lay beneath a pile of
towels in a tan recliner. The frames were bent and one lens had popped
out.
Kacie had been missing for six hours now.
It was 3:35 a.m. Dec. 4, 2002, a half-hour since the persistent ring of
Byrds telephone had jarred him from a deep slumber. The caller had been
Jim Wooley, a Faulkner County sheriffs investigator.

FBI agent Jerry Spurgers knelt on the floor of 13-year-old Kacie Woodys
bedroom, holding two crumpled pieces of paper that might reveal the
identity of Kacies kidnapper.
Kacie had been missing for 12 hours now, snatched from her living room
as she typed at the computer, and the lawmen investigating her
disappearance desperately needed leads.
Surrounded by the stuffed animals lining the teenagers top bunk, the
hundreds of Beanie Babies perched on shelves and the angels scattered here
and there, Spurgers carefully smoothed the creases from the scraps of
paper he had just pulled from Kacies trash can.

Kacie could compute the percentage of "true love" in each relationship.

Leaving a Legacy to Kids

Kacie Woody felt safe in the confines of her Christian chat room. So,
unfortunately, did her killer. Last Dec. 4, Kacie, 13, was abducted,
sexually assaulted and murdered by David Fuller, 47, who gained her trust
by pretending to be 18. Nabbed while she was alone in her Holland,
Arkansas, home, she was taken to a storage space, assaulted and shot in
the head.

Law Enforcement 2.0
Sexual predators lurking online. This looks like a job for The North
Little Rock PD? Don't laugh.

Like the four men who work there, the offices of the North Little Rock
Police Department's Special Investigations Unit are haunted by Kacie
Woody. Her photograph is tacked up in places around the room, grainy shots
from the newspaper, often sharing space on corkboards and file cabinets
with pictures of the detectives' own families. Talking to them, her name
comes up a lot.

On Dec. 4, 2002, 13-year-old Kacie was sexually assaulted and killed by a
California man she had been chatting with over the Internet. Detective
Steve Hunter has the newspaper clipping over his desk. On his computer
hard drive, Keith Jackson keeps an image of Kacie's locker at Greenbrier
Middle School, decorated with flowers and cards after her death. All the
detectives have kids. That day, they got one more.

"It was the worst-case scenario," said Lt. Tracy Roulston, who took over
as SIU supervisor in January 2003. "The fact that a young girl lost her
life like that was just tragic. You bet it hit home for us, especially in
this unit. We'd have loved to have been on the other end of that, instead
of her."

B.T. Carmichal is the unit's surveillance specialist and a member of the
North Little Rock S.W.A.T. team. The month before Kacie Woody was killed
in Conway, Carmichal lost a hand when a S.W.A.T.-style "flashbang" grenade
exploded prematurely. In the hospital at the time of the slaying, he still
remembers his sadness at the news, and wishing that there were more units
like his to prevent what happened. "It brings it to reality," Carmichal
said. "It did for me, like a cold splash of water. Makes you realize the
importance of your job. We feel like we're doing it for Kacie."
