Picket and Leaflet in Support of Workers Rights

Tues. December 1st, 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Outside Urban Outfitters
628 Broadway (just off Houston St.)
6 to Bleecker St. or B,D,F,V to Broadway-Lafayette

Workers at the Stockholm, Sweden branch of Urban Outfitters want to form a union. Management refuses to recognize the union and presented the staff with an ultimatum: either quit or become employed by a temporary agency, which the store will contract out to. This is an attempt to get around Sweden’s relatively strong laws regarding union representation.

This is because the staff wanted what all people want: job security, clear work rules and decent working conditions through a collective bargaining agreement.

Help us send a message to Urban Outfitters. Workers everywhere have the right to union representation. Boycott Urban Outfitters and join our picket at a local chain.

Kadiatou Diallo (Amadou Diallo's mother) is lending her voice to this.
Their Advocacy page includes: "Are you an elected leader or political
activist? Join our advocacy action group. Email
allianceguinea@... to get involved in any of these
sub-committees." There is also a full list of ways you can help at
http://www.allianceguinea.org/advocacy-what-you-can-do/ Please do.

The US based rights group Alliance Guinea is organizing a march and
protest demanding the military junta in Conakry, murderers of
thousands of innocents and, be brought to justice. Only last week it
was reported that the Guinean military was employing South African and
Israeli mercenaries, hired by a firm run by a US former West Point
graduate and Morgan Stanley executive, to train ethnic militias. The
use of such divisions, long overcome in by most Guineans, could plunge
the nation into a civil war like Yugoslavia experienced in the 1990s,
and create suffering across West Africa. Demand the UN make sure the
regime in Conakry knows they have no future in government, and their
only hope is to hand over power to a civilian transitional authority
immediately.

If you can't make the Tuesday lunchtime march:

*Write a letter to your government and press demanding action, and

*Come to the "Musique contre la Violence" unity night in Harlem on
December 9 at 8PM at Shrine in Harlem

Full release follows:

=========================

Pro-democracy march in NYC on Dec. 8
From: Alliance Guinea
http://www.allianceguinea.org

This is far from over - the latest news out of Guinea is a proposed
deal that would have the CNDD junta heading a "national transition
council" for up to 10 months and open the door for Dadis to stand in
elections. At the same time, the UN is beginning the work of the
international commission of inquiry into the crimes of September 28,
but it's clear that more international pressure against the military
and support for the population is needed.

Here in New York Alliance Guinea has joined forces with the Guinean
Forces Vives in the US and our friends Kadiatou Diallo and Norman
Siegel of the Amadou Diallo Foundation to form the "September 28
Coalition for Justice and Democracy in Guinea."

Together we are organizing a march and rally on Tuesday, December 8
from 11am - 3pm to demand justice for the crimes committed and support
for a speedy and democratic transition to civilian rule in Guinea. At
11am we will gather in front of the Guinean consulate at 140 E. 39th
St., marching then to 47th Street and rallying by noon at Dag
Hammarskjold Park in front of the United Nations.
see http://www.allianceguinea.org Stay tuned for a list of expected speakers.

If you live far from New York and cannot join us in person, here are
two things you can still do:

1. Make a donation – help us offset the cost of the rally (permits,
transport, stage & sound system costs, etc.) through our new online
giving button at http://www.allianceguinea.org Check it out and pass
the word – every gift counts!

2. Write a letter (again!) to your local newspaper or
Congressperson/Member of Parliament and tell them about the march and
how the latest news out of Guinea confirms the critical need for
international pressure and support is critical to getting justice and
preventing what could spiral into civil war. For sample letters and
other tips, see
http://www.allianceguinea.org/advocacy-what-you-can-do/

And if you are in the New York area and can’t make it during lunch
hour on Tuesday, don’t miss for what is going to be an amazing
"Musique contre la Violence" unity night in Harlem on December 9 at
8pm at Shrine in Harlem with some of the greatest masters of Guinean
music living in America and guest speakers from the September 28
Coalition.

The situation in Guinea is just as dire as ever, and justice must be
served and the military must go.

I'm in the tricky business of having a Bromeliad Holiday Party (meeting) that night (and a Muste

This goes, however, to all the contacts I've got in the city.

Everyone who is anyone will be in Times Square on Wednesday.

Vets For Peace has endorsed and will be participating in the following events in NYC this week:

1. Monday, November 30: World March for Peace and Nonviolence Comes to NYC

The World March Team arrives in New York City, after visiting 40 countries, 5 continents and 60 days after setting out from New Zealand. The marchers have taken their message of peace and nonviolence to some of the past and present zones of conflict: Hiroshima, the Korean Demilitarized zone, the border of Pakistan and India, Israel and Palestine, and the Balkan countries. www.worldmarchinnyc.org

Brooklyn Bridge

1 PM: Gather at Borough Hall in Brooklyn with World March supporters from 100 participating countries. Together, we'll escort the World March team over the bridge to City Hall and bring the universal call for peace and nonviolence to New York City.

City Hall

3 PM: Join the World March team on the steps of City Hall. We'll talk to the press about the march's goals and achievements and receive a proclamation from the New York City Council.

Riverside Church

7 PM: Celebrate the official welcome of the international team of marchers with "Beyond Violence," a multimedia program of inspirational talks and performances. Join us for an evening highlighting the marchers' journey and achievements, including meetings with world leaders and their designation as emissaries of the groundbreaking "Charter for a World Without Violence" at the November '09 Berlin Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates.

2.  Wednesday Dec. 2, Protest the Escalation of the US War in Afghanistan!

6:00 PM Times Square Recruiting Station

Broadway between 43rd and 44th Streets

On Tuesday, Dec. 1, President Obama is scheduled to lay out his plans for Afghanistan. Unfortunately, he is expected to order an escalation of troops. Call the White House (202-456-1111 or 202-456-1414 Mon--Fri, 9 am -- 5 pm) immediately, and tell him to CHOOSE DIPLOMACY, not ESCALATION! If a troop increase is announced, Vets For Peace will join NYC-UFPJ, IVAW, Code Pink, Peace Action NYS and many other groups for a vigil in Times Square to protest the surge in troops, as well as more money and lives for endless war.

3. Celebration of the World March for Peace
Wednesday, December 2, 6:30 p.m.
Reidy Friendship Hall
Unitarian Church of All Souls
1157 Lexington Avenue (@80th Street)

CODEPINK NYC, VFP and an array of peace and justice groups will participate at the World March USA Day festivities on behalf of The World March for Peace and Non-Violence (www.worldmarchusa.net).  The World March is taking place in 100 countries and 300 cities from October 2, 2009 through January 2, 2010. The December 2nd celebration will include speakers, musical performances as well as drinks and baked goods.

My hunch is that "everyone will be there" (ironically I can't be - I have a meeting of the Muste Board that
night at the same time).

This goes to my NYC lists. I am sure WRL and the SP and CCDS and Solidarity are all also involved
(I can't speak for them - but my point is this is not a sectarian event, and I wish very much I could be
there).

My email seems to be working again. As most of you know, I have a terrible
time waking up in
the morning - so I can't promise I'll make this Sunday's event. But it
certainly is an excellent
reason for getting up and getting to the Muste Building at 1 p.m., THIS
Sunday.

It is a rare chance to hear a serious left analysis of the situation.

Fraternally,

Appeals to Obama's Top Cop Eric Holder Spread Deadly Illusions
Mumia's Life Is On the Line: Mobilize Labor/Black Power to Free Him Now!

http://www.internationalist.org/mumialifeonline0911.html

The threat to Mumia Abu-Jamal's life is increasingly ominous. His lead
attorney, Robert Bryan, warns: "There is an escalated effort by the
authorities to see him die at the hands of the executioner. This is the most
dangerous time for Mumia since his 1981 arrest." The U.S. Supreme Court has
turned down Jamal's two appeals. If it were to rule in favor of the
prosecution's appeal, this would open the way for Pennsylvania governor Ed
Rendell to issue a third warrant of execution, which he has vowed to do.
Contrary to the misplaced expectations of many, the Obama administration is
not about to save Mumia. Around the world, hundreds of thousands have marched
for this courageous champion of oppressed. Trade unions representing millions
of members have rallied to the defense of Mumia. It is urgent to expand this
support into powerful labor/black action, appealing to the integrated union
movement to join with the black, Latino and immigrant poor to demand that he
be liberated.

*Healing Turtle Island*

The Collegiate Church, established in New Amsterdam in 1628, will hold a
healing ceremony with representatives of the Lenape Indians on Friday,
November 27, at 11 AM in the plaza on Bowling Green in front of the old U.S.
Custom House (now the National Museum of the American Indian). The date
marks the first observance of Native American Heritage Day, as signed into
law by President Obama in June. “Turtle Island” is a common reference among
Indian peoples for the land that European settlers called “the new world.”

As the 400^th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s discovery of Manhattan draws to
a close, the healing event offers a substantial peg for a story on
Collegiate Church, the oldest surviving institution of New Amsterdam, and
the Native Americans who met the Dutch settlers here.

The ceremony marks a reconciliation between Collegiate Church and the
Lenape, the result of two years of work and trust-building by Intersections,
an inter-faith, inter-cultural initiative that is one of Collegiate’s five
ministries. The ceremony has spiritual elements, on the part of both
Collegiate and the Lenape, but is not, strictly speaking, a religious event.

As the “company church” of the Dutch West Indies Company that made New
Amsterdam a “company town,” Collegiate Church, speaking only for itself,
wishes to acknowledge publicly the role it played in the cultural
marginalization and physical dispersion of the Native Americans living here,
slowly degrading them (in European eyes) from a people with their own
culture and civilization to merely another resource.

The event site is near where the first Collegiate Church was raised in Fort
Amsterdam. Surrounding the site are reminders the most enduring contribution
by the Dutch to American civic life, an economic system built on Calvinist
enterprise and /laissez-faire /capitalism, exemplified by the Beaux-Arts
Custom House itself, Steamship Row, the Standard Oil building and Wall
Street. Native Americans were excluded from this feast, however, or were
exploited by those who were admitted./ /

Just across State Street from the event site is a monument to possibly the
greatest misunderstanding by the Dutch of Native Americans, Peter Minuit’s
so-called “purchase” of Manhattan in 1626 for 60 guilders’ worth of dry
goods. “Thus was laid the foundation of the City of New-York,” says the
marker on the monument.

That is true, of course. But the Lenape did not have a concept of private
ownership of land; likely, they believed that Minuit simply was thanking
them for the aid they had given the Dutch settlers when they first started
arriving here. However, the Dutch either did not know or did not care to
know that fact and proceeded as though they had bought Manhattan outright.
Four hundred years later, European arrival, settlement, and culture still
dominate New York and America’s paradigm of history.

With no illusions about correcting past errors, Collegiate Church has
determined to acknowledge its forebears’ short sightedness in the healing
ceremony and move forward with new found care and respect for the Lenape and
other Native Americans who respond to the church’s outreach. According to
census figures, New York City has the largest number of self-identifying
Native Americans living in an urban area, almost 90,000.

The ceremony will include prayers from both parties, music, symbolic
exchanges, a statement of healing, adopted by the 57 member Consistory of
the Collegiate Church as an official resolution and a response by
representatives of the Lenape people and their kin. The event will conclude
with a traditional fellowship meal and is open to the public. The story will
be told by the people whose story it is, representatives of Collegiate
Church and the Lenape.

Vote No on Obama-care! Healthcare is Our Human Right!
Socialist Party USA Statement
http://socialistparty-usa.org/statements/no3962.html

While citizens in most other industrialized nations enjoyed the benefits of
publicly administered healthcare from the aftermath of WW II forward, Americans
have suffered under a healthcare system dominated by private corporations.
For-profit healthcare has produced negative health outcomes at all levels of the
system. More than 48 million people have no health insurance, 30 million more
are underinsured and 6 out of 10 Americans report that they have either delayed
or deferred a necessary medical procedure in the last year. Americans are more
than ready for publicly-run healthcare that guarantees access at all levels of
the system.

Unfortunately, the bill recently passed by the House of Representatives, The
Affordable Healthcare for America Act (HR 3962), and the proposals being
considered by the Senate will not provide the relief Americans so desperately
need. Instead, these reforms were shaped and, in some cases, authored by the
very same private interests who have spent decades collecting massive profits by
restricting access to care. As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama sensed the
growing public anger about healthcare and scored many popularity points for
promising “universal healthcare coverage.” Once in office, after taking
millions from the healthcare lobby, his rhetoric shifted to the neoliberal
promise of “choice and competition” in healthcare.

The primary problem with HR 3962 and the Senate proposals is that all of the
changes they propose are made within a for-profit system. The House Bill strips
the insurance companies of the right to deny coverage based on a pre-existing
condition. Yet, it de-links the public option from Medicare reimbursement rates,
thereby surrendering pricing to the private sector. The Bill removes the
anti-trust exemption enjoyed by private insurers. However, it simultaneously
mandates that all Americans carry some form of health insurance, thereby herding
millions into low-coverage high-fee private plans. Each step in a positive
direction is coupled with a restructuring that will enrich private insurance
companies and pharmaceutical makers.

The bills lost further reform credentials as Democrats cut last minute deals
with Republicans. Immigrants were removed from eligibility for the public
option, abortions were written out of the proposal and Medicare funding was cut.
The Medicare cuts are particularly cruel, since they will reduce an already
compromised plan to bare bones coverage. Some of the cuts will limit private
insurance profiteering, but others will slash necessary items such as exercise
programs for seniors. Overall, these omissions signal that the reforms are not
about providing comprehensive medical coverage, but about political expediency
within the establishment political class. The next round of negotiations in the
Senate is sure to produce even further regressive measures as campaign-donation
driven legislators cut more deals.

What people in this country need is healthcare. It is their right as human
beings. The only way to secure this right is to place the healthcare system in
public hands–-to remove the profit-motive from the system. Single-payer
healthcare, as embodied in House Resolution 676, would be a positive step in
this direction. It would provide universal access to care to all residents of
the United States by abolishing private health insurance companies. In thirteen
clearly written pages, HR 676 does the things the 1,990 page HR 3962 does not.
Access to care is made universal, a framework is created to make bulk
negotiations with hospitals and doctors and healthcare activists would be freed
to set their sights on making the pharmaceutical industry public as well.

The Socialist Party USA therefore encourages its members and supporters to
continue their work in the single-payer movement and to pressure elected
representatives to vote “No” on the Senate proposal and, eventually, on the
merged bill. All non-violent forms of protest should be employed to prevent the
passage of this legislation. The protests should clearly oppose the legislation.
We do not want a stronger public option, we want what is rightfully
ours–-unfettered access to healthcare services.

The passage of the weak and contradictory reform bills threaten to disgrace the
notion that the public sector should play a prominent role in the administering
of healthcare. Resisting the Obama, House and Senate proposals for reform not
only promotes the idea that healthcare is a human right, it sends the message
that people will not allow private sector campaign contributions to drive
politics–-the satisfaction of our needs as humans should shape legislation.

Access to healthcare is our human right. We must build a movement to secure this
right.

Say no to HR 3962!
Say no to Obama Care!
Yes to single-payer!
Yes to a socialized medical system!

New issue preview

The upcoming UN Climate Change meetings in Copenhagen are a watershed moment for humanity and ecology. As Climate Change scholar Joel Kovel writes “it’s hard to overstate the importance of these meetings,” but we also can’t expect the political and business elite to solve the dilemma they’ve got us into: This would mean their own suicide. At this impasse, we are confronted by catastrophic climate change or saving what we have left by demanding business and government take action. Beyond their negligence is an equal, ecologically sustainable society that we need to start building. This vision sets the tone for our new climate change issue.

As L.D. Danny Harvey writes in our latest issue, the time to limit greenhouse gas emissions was 30 years ago, “the best we can hope for now is to minimize the damage and save what can still be saved.” Enter Larry Lohman, and his warnings on imagination and climate change solutions. Climate solutions, says Lohman “must always be to stop the flow of fossil carbon out of the ground, not try to maximize the space for it above ground.” The blundering path of cap-and-trade advocates runs up against the horrifying realities of the Alberta Tar Sands. Keith Stewart, director of World Wildlife Fund Canada’s climate change program, provides some astute political and environmental commentary on the whole oily mess: “What is alarming is that absent any reasonable democratic debate, the tar sands have become the de facto economic development strategy for Canada.” Tom Goldtooth, executive director of the Indigenous Environmental Network, delivers a hefty punch to the practitioners of climate colonialism.

While things heat up—climate wise—independent Canadian bookstores are left out in the cold. Kristin Schwartz spills some ink on the how local bookstores compete with the big guys and scramble to pay the rent. A fine example of investigative journalism by John Lasker tells the story of Canadian gold mines exploiting Africa’s poorest communities and cutting deals with genocidal militias. We get theological with Jewish scholar Yakov Rabkin on the roots of Zionism and what it means today.

Rounding things off, we’ve got sports commentator Simon Black on the racism and sexism of the International Association of Athletics Federations. Ed Janzen laments the demise of television with class, and Chris Webb reports from El Salvador on the media wars behind Cold War massacres.

Radical History 'From Below'

Members of Bristol Radical History Group

The 'History Workshop' movement was founded in 1966 in Ruskin College, Oxford, U.K. by the Marxist academic Raphael Samuel, a champion of 'history from below.' He famously defined this movement as being "the belief that history is or ought to be a collaborative enterprise, one in which the researcher, the archivist, the curator and the teacher, the 'do-it-yourself' enthusiast and the local historian, the family history societies and the individual archaeologist, should all be regarded as
equally engaged."

In 2006 in the U.K., Bristol Radical History Group was formed with a view opening up some of the hidden history of their home city to public scrutiny, to challenge some commonly held ideas about historical events and approach this history from 'below'. Unlike Samuel's 'History Workshop,' the group actually came 'from below' its genesis being in an expanded sports club rather than in the academy. As a result it has been able to successfully integrate both the formal lecture with street performance, the organic intellectual with the academic and engage the public in the excitement of radical history by the use of different media.

Members of Bristol Radical History Group will be outlining the influences that inspired their project from E.P.Thompson to punk rock, describing their forays into the battles over the historical representations of their city from slavery to labour history and looking to the future of radical history from 'below'. So if you want to find out what unites a 17th Century blasphemous preacher and some drunken Can-Can dancers this is the event for you.

  Unemployed & Underemployed:
How the Working Class
Can Fight for Jobs for All

Since April 2008 the number unemployed in the U.S. doubled from 7.7 to 15.1 million. The official unemployed rate in September was 9.8%. The rate is 17%, when workers who have stopped looking for work and those who are working part-time are included. The unemployed rate for Blacks, Latinos, and youth is greater still. The union officials have failed to mount a campaign to defend workers' jobs and the government "stimulus" effort has been a non-starter for capitalist production or for the working class.
Join a discussion on how we can fight to win measures to defend our lives and livelihoods.
