Bismarck, N.D. (AP) The chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe says the
settlement of UND's Fighting Sioux nickname lawsuit will put unwelcome
pressure on tribal leaders.
The settlement says UND has three years to drop its nickname and Indian
head logo unless North Dakota's two Sioux tribes decide the school should
keep it.
Ron His Horse Is Thunder chairs the Standing Rock Sioux tribe.
He says UND should use the three years to prepare for a new nickname. He
says it will be divisive to try to persuade tribal members to allow the
Fighting Sioux name.
United Tribes Technical College President David Gipp says the settlement
shows a lack of respect for the Standing Rock and Spirit Lake Sioux tribes.
Hep says the tribes have already made it plain they don't want the name to
continue.
