Mashpee Chairman Apologizes, Turns Over Duties

The chairman of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe apologized today for
misrepresenting his military record and turned his duties over to the
tribe’s vice chairman.

In a front-page story on Aug. 18, The Day reported that Mashpee Wampanoag
Tribal Chairman Glenn Marshall had earned five Purple Hearts and one Silver
Star during three tours of duty as a Marine in Vietnam.

That information came in part from Marshall’s legal advisor and lobbyist,
James Morris, and in part from a biography in which Marshall supplied
information to the tribe’s public relations firm, The Liberty Square Group,
said spokesman Scott Ferson.

In a statement, Marshall also addressed information that resurfaced in a
Cape Cod Times story today on a rape conviction he went to prison for in
the early 1980s.

“I am proud of my service in the Vietnam War and stand by the service I
provided for my country during that horrific period of history,” the
statement reads.

“Like others who were part of the war, the years that followed my service
are not something I’m proud of. I am proud of the rehabilitation and
turnaround in my life following those years, and am proud of what the Tribe
has accomplished. I am sorry to have distorted my record and to allow it to
stand uncorrected.”

Tribal Vice Chairman Shawn Hendricks will “assume (Marshall’s) day-to-day
responsibilities” so Marshall can “properly deal with the mental and
physical issues" Marshall is facing, the statement read.

“Like a lot of veterans from that era, I realize I have my own demons that
I need to deal with,” Marshall said.

Hendricks said in prepared remarks: “During Glenn’s absence, business for
the Tribe will continue. Next week we will file an application to take land
into trust in Mashpee and in Middleborough. It has been through Glenn’s
leadership the Tribe has realized federal recognition and all that comes
with it. That work will continue.”
