Jambalaya 2008 is coming around faster than you think, remember to book your accommodation early as it is a busy time of year in Rotorua. 500 early birds are nearly gone and we are limiting the total festival numbers to 3000 so you will have an amazing festival experience without huge crowds to battle for space to see bands, workshops and shows.

 

Rotorua Locals discount

We have set aside a number of tickets for Rotorua locals at the discounted price of $145.00 (booking fees apply). These will be able to be purchased over the counter from the ticketek outlet in the Convention Centre Rotorua, proof of address may be required, Available from next week.

 

BSM Album Release.

Batucada Sound Machine, featuring at Jambalaya 08, are releasing their long awaited debut album – Rhythm and Rhyme, in stores October 8. BSM have also been nominated for best video in the Juice TV awards. Gino Mayaute (Salsa, Merengue and Shines) - Gino is a Native-born Peruvian who lives in Australia and New Zealand. Gino has been dancing his whole life and has taught and performed professionally for the past 5 years. He has won national Salsa competitions in New Zealand in 2000 and in Australia in 2001. He has been the instructor of The New Zealand Salsa Champions 2002, also the Champions of Street Latin Dance Free Style 2003.

Krystal Ashby-Peckham (LA Salsa) - A dancer all her life, Krystal comes from a performance background, teaching and performing for The Flamingo Dance Academy in Kansas, U.S.A from 2000-2002 where she performed at the prestigious opening of the Kansas Speedway and at countless University and Corporate functions.

Cecile Bale (Tango) - Specializing in Salon Style Tango, the dance style native to the vibrant and crowded dance salons of Buenos Aires, Cecile Bale is without a doubt one of the finest practioners of Tango. The Organizer of the Annual New Zealand Tango Ball & Competition and the founder of Tango ENZ, Cecile is widely regarded as one of the very best Tango teachers in New Zealand.

SPANISH CLASSES

The Spanish classes start this Wednesday at 5pm and are taught by Bella Mary Waugh, she has a lot of spanish experience and a great passion for Spanish.  Bella lived and studied for 2 years in Mexico City and is finishing a double major in Politics and Latin American Studies.

The classes are only $4 an hour and designed to be fun and interesting and the perfect preparation for your OE in South America or Europe. There are no textbooks or tests

“Dancing Tango, what is it like?”

Did anyone around you ask this question?  I believe
this is a simple question, which is frequently asked
by others including dancers and non-dancers alike. I
still don’t know how to simply respond to this
question.

My mother-in-law once asked me, “How come all the
Tango dancers dance look so serious while dancing?”
when she came along with me and Eugenia to a local
milonga.  I know she used to dance all night to Peter
Leschenko’s tango songs in her younger days in Soviet
Union. That means she grew up with and understands
Tango dancing. To her question, however, I just
replied, “I don’t know,” and smiled at her.

Now that TANGO ZEN: WALKING DANCE MEDICATION is
officially published, I am trying to reflect on how
and why I started this book publication project.  One
thing I learned is that self-publication is a hard
thing to do.

I think this book is expression of the feelings that I
have when I dance tango.   The feelings are hard to
explain, if not impossible, with a few words.  The
more I dance Tango, the closer I get to understanding
of my true nature, moment by moment,  as Zen teaches.
