Hi Everyone,
The June 7 trip will be a tough act to follow with its record breaking (at least
for NYSYBC trips) number of species (70) but if any place can beat it it is our
next destination. On June 27 we will be heading to Doodletown and Iona Island.
The trip is being sponsored by the Edgar A. Mearns Bird Club and our leader will
be Gerhard Patsch.
Just to wet your appetite take a look at the list of birds seen in the past:
Black Vulture, Turkey Vulture. Black-billed Cuckoo, Red-bellied Woodpecker,
Pileated Woodpecker, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Eastern Phoebe,
Yellow-throated Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Red-eyed Vireo,Blue-gray Gnatcatcher,
Wood Thrush, Veery, Gray Catbird, Blue-winged Warbler, Cerulean Warbler,
American Redstart, Hooded Warbler, Scarlet Tanagers, Chipping Sparrow, Northern
Cardinal, Indigo Bunting, Red-winged Blackbird, Brown-headed Cowbird, Baltimore
Oriole, Golden-Winged Warbler and Kentucky Warbler (seen in May, 2009).
Pretty impressive list and that is only a partial one. 32 species of Wood
Warblers have been seen in Doodletown alone.
A little history of the area:
If you are like me you never heard of Doodletown or Iona Island. There is a good
reason. Doodletown technically no longer exists. It was settled in 1762 but by
1965 most residents had moved out. Eventually all the buildings were knocked
down leaving only the foundations some of which can still be seen. For more on
the history check out the following website:

More details such as start time, location etc... to come!
Please register for the trip by June 12 by sending me an email with your name,
specific plans for the date of the trip & transportation, and any concerns or
questions. As always, parental permission forms must be in 1 week (June 19)
prior to the trip.
Just a reminder - NYSYBC field trips are for Youth Members and adults
transporting Youth Members only. Non members may attend one field trip
before joining.
