Like Rod said, AIR FORCE 1 is used with the President on board. SAM or VENUS is
used when he's not on board. There's 2 747-200's / VC-25A's, 28000 & 29000 tail
numbers.
The F-16's didn't escort AF-1 they were just being used as a CAP (Combat Air
Patrol) in case any unknown aircraft strayed into the restricted area around
AF-1 or the President. Also known as a TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction).
