Subject: Special Announcement: The 1:64 Modeling Guide has a New Owner!
rebendever
Send Email Send Email

August 1, 2008:

Debbie & I are pleased to make this announcement. Many of you may
already know this publication's new owner and if you do, you know
that Bob Nalbone is a dedicated model railroader. Debbie and I will
still be around to help Bob out with proofing, editing, and
advertising. Bob has honored me by allowing me to continue
the "GaSoline Alley" column as long as it draws readers.

If you are a current subscriber, there is NO reason to panic. The
new owner is honoring existing subscribers. If you are not sure if
you are current with your 1:64MG subscription, all that you need to
do is look at the back of the last 1:64 Modeling Guide issue (Volume
9, Issue 6 & looks like the issue just above this text) and the
information there will tell you if this is your last issue; if you
have 1 or 2 issues left, or the number of the issue in the future
that your subscription expires. You can also email a question about
your subscription if you can't figure any of this out. The first
issue for the new owner will be along shortly in the Fall, 2008.

Sincerely, Richard E Bendever, Group Moderator

Does anyone know of a source for a couple very small DC motors, 12 volts or
less? By small, I mean about the size of a pencil eraser, 1/4" diameter or so,
and shaft diameter will do. Torque requirements are minimal, just to be used on
an "automation" project. I priced suitable Sugamis at Caboose Hobbies
yesterday, and they are much too expnesive for the job.

Any leads much apreciated.

That sounds about the same size as the motors that come in the Zip-Zap R/C cars
from RadioShack - customizing kits including motors and various gear sets are
relatively cheap.

Another source is pagers and electric toothbrushes and the like. Small
motors that tun on low voltage DC.

Rio Grande Models has a new item for you D&RGW and RGS fans.

It is a roundhouse stove. Used to heat the cold engine houses in the
winter. Stove is cast in white metal and the P/N is 3345-SS. They are $3.00

attempt I'd feel better with some pointers.

Gerry:

Years ago, in an effort to have both an less-expensive (than brass) loco for
track testing
and an inexpensive test bed for a DCC installation, I journeyed to Caboose in
search of an
early diesel switcher to re-gauge. I was hoping for a roundhouse box cab, but
discovered
tightening the gauge about 3/32" from HO to Sn3 would be a job. A sales guy and
I looked
at a number of locos and I finally settled on a Life Like ALCO S1 or S2, as that
was both
small and somewhat representative of SP's "Little Giant."

On this particular loco, the wheel sets fit into a tube axle: cut the tube axle
and install
some washers made from styrene between the wheels and sideframes and you are
good to
go! I suggest looking for this arrangement when considering candidates to
re-gauge.

I wish I could say the decoder installation went as smoothly. I had to ditch the
cab detai to
fit two 1/2" speakers back-to-backl, and the decoder barely fit under the hood.
With
some help from Soundtraxx, I got it all in, and the diesel works pretty well,
though the
whole thing set me back more than I had planned. But, it is a lot less than a
painted brass
engine with sound. If the diesel takes a swan dive on new track, I will probably
be a lot
less upset!

I doubt the model I have is still in production, though I have seen them at
train shows. I
bought an SP unit, and painted out the SP lettering to create a more generic
scheme with
some safety strips. An AT&SF unit in the early B&W scheme would work well too.

Good luck!

Keith

Gerry,

I made this conversion about a year ago. Purchased the unit from Steve
DePolo and with his advice, had a go at it. My biggest problem was getting
the shell off of the frame. I finally had to go to the Kato website and
download instructions for removing it. Either I am simple minded or it is
tougher than you might think. Beyond that it was pretty easy. The drive
uses a split axle configuration, and you are literally removing a bit of
axle in the middle (so they don't touch) and then shifting the wheel (axle
and all) into the truck assembly until they are in gauge. I was also able
to file off some of the weight in the long hood and place a lenz decoder on
top of the weight for DCC control. I did not add sound as I only wanted an
inexpensive power unit to run my track cleaning train.

I hope this helps you. Good luck with it.

John Hartline

What sort of info are you looking for in a photography video?  How to get good
results with an inexpensive camera?  Or perhaps how to use pro gear?  Or...?

The biggest thing in photography isn't which fancy camera you use, or whether
you have mastered Photo Shop.  It's how to use lights properly.

Anyway, I'll be interested in any feedback from the group...

Paul, as a long time film shooter and recent convert to digital, here
is what I think would help.

1) Lighting basics...........is color temp a factor any longer?
Placement?

2) Angle of the shot? Shoting upward? Composition

3) Tricks for depth of field......a discussion of Helicon focus perhaps?

4) Digital editing basics. How do you add smoke to the smokestack?
Remove unwanted items?

5) use of a tripod?

6) Would try to cover use of a point and shoot as well as an slr style
camera.

Yes. Modern digital cameras, even the cheap ones, take some of the guess
work out of operating the camera itself--even compensating for color balance
to some degree. But how to light the scenes would be great. Some basic
photo shop skills like how to add smoke and steam would be nice, too. I've
always admired the great photography like Paul's and others and it's the
lighting that makes it impressive.

That's my $0.02.

Robert, Jim, and others...

What sort of info are you looking for in a photography video? How to get
good results with an inexpensive camera? Or perhaps how to use pro gear?
Or...?

The biggest thing in photography isn't which fancy camera you use, or
whether you have mastered Photo Shop. It's how to use lights properly.

Anyway, I'll be interested in any feedback from the group...

Larry, and the gang...

After receiving several e-mails urging me to consider a photo DVD, I'm now
giving it serious thought.

I'll let you all know soon...

Hi Marc,

Thanks for the ideas.  They're all good...  A number of people have written,
saying they'd like such a DVD, so I'll be giving it serious thought over the
next few days.

I'm not sure if anyone has done such a video in the model railroad field up to
now, so maybe it is a viable project.  We'll see...

Paul, as a long time film shooter and recent convert to digital, here
is what I think would help.

1) Lighting basics...... .....is color temp a factor any longer?
Placement?

2) Angle of the shot? Shoting upward? Composition

3) Tricks for depth of field......a discussion of Helicon focus perhaps?

4) Digital editing basics. How do you add smoke to the smokestack?
Remove unwanted items?

5) use of a tripod?

6) Would try to cover use of a point and shoot as well as an slr style
camera.

Paul,

I too think such a DVD would pay for itself. Especially if you title it for
for general model building rather than "Photograph your model railroad".

Show the setup, take a photo and paste it into your timeline, and repeat.

I would make it for digital photos rather than 6 by 4.5 Hasselblad cameras.
