I am working on entry 1, my last try. I have a few questions. What can I
use for technology? Can I tie a student' s opinion of a genetic invention
(evolution, biotech, cloning, gmo, etc) into a paper? Can I use the
internet for them to get backgroun info on this? Also, I am doing
genetics, what kinds of student work examples can I send in, can it be
worksheets? THanks...
OK, if you're feeling like I did, right about now is when the heebie
jeebies start to set in! Work seemed to multiply as time and energy
waned. If this is you, try taking a few days off from your entries--
I promise--it will help!
I also recall that discouragement set in about now. The fears of not
passing, the way down deep 'maybe I'm just not cut out for this'
feeling. The temptation to quit...
Don't do it. The hardest part really IS behind you.
Just remember--we're all in this process together, and support is
available--especially here on Yahoo. You ARE a good teacher, and you
WILL 'survive'! But please don't give up. You've come too far!
I know you've heard this till you're sick of it, but since the 'home
stretch' is just ahead, I thought I'd offer a little reminder list
to help make sure all your ducks are in a row. Hope it helps.
T—tenses should be correct and consistent.
H—have all forms taken care of (class layout, release forms, etc.)
E—engage your students with active involvement in your videos.
H—high expectations evidenced--clearly observable in your writing.
O—only active voice in your writing. Write the way you speak!
M—make copies of everything before you send anything.
E—examples cited! "For example" is your best friend!
S—standards-based vocabulary. The Standards are the KEY.
T—tightly written narrative. Streamline! Say it and move on.
R—relevant lesson connections. Real world application is a must!
E—evidence of student learning. Clear and convincing.
T—technically correct, e.g., margins, font, spelling,etc.
C—completely address the questions. Answer what you're asked.
H—have at least one educator and non-educator read all your
entries and be brutally honest.

I recall reading in the portfolio instructions that there were 2 entries that must be from different units of study. Well, I think I recall this. Maybe I'm losing my mind. Trying to do all 4 entries in one semester will do that I guess.
Has anyone seen any 2 entries that cannot overlap or be from the same unit of study?

My understanding is that NONE of the units can be from
the same unit. Check your directions. It is in the
first section.
Good luck.

I was using my CD ROM for EA Science and I noticed that on the pack
and ship page for Entry 1 that it says we should have a culminating
assessment cover sheet and culminating assessment description (max. 2
Pages). This is not stated in my portfolio instructions. Has
anyone else encountered the same problem????
This is from the packing section For Entry 4 (below) and the online under how to set up science - portfolio section (page 18) states to place first each written infor for each accomplishmetn then the documetnation for that one right behind it and the place Acommplishment 2 and then the documentation behind that etc.(which is not what the packaging section says).
Entry 4:Documented Accomplishments: Contributions to Student LearningAssemble Entry 4 in the following sequence (top to bottom)
Entry 4 Cover Sheet (top)
Contextual Information Sheet
Description and Analysis (10 pages maximum) and Documentation (16 pages maximum)
I am AYA Science and the way I understand it is that the two pages IS
the culminating assessment...whatever you are doing at the end of the
major idea over time unit.

anywhere?
I am trying to write up my video entries....ugh..DAE is done though!

Last year I purchased several books to assist me, but the one I found really helpful was The National Science Education Standards by the National Research Council. This book is comprehensive addressing the standards, pedagogy and student learning at all the different levels, with examples. The index really breaks down the information so you can ero in on what you're looking for. The process skills for your level should be mentioned in your portfolio. I know I searched the internet using 'process skills' as the key words and came up w/ several sites that discussed them.
Good luck.

Thanks, I looked on the web and found process skills. Thanks for your help!

I am a re-take candidate and could only afford to retake one thing
this year. I need to score at least a 2 on the assessment -
fundamental concepts to pass. I am taking the assessment in June and
I want to be prepared. What can I do? I am a biology teacher, but I
have never taught AP biology so I feel as though I have a small
disadvantage.....please help!
I am an National Board Candidate in AYA/SCI, Chemistry. Does anyone
know if just any assessment center offers the Chemistry subtest or if
there are only certain ones? Are there any other Chemistry
candidates or National Board Certified folks out there? (I live in
MO).

I'm AYA Science - Chemistry as well. If anyone would like, email me. I'm the only one in my area taking the chemistry route and would love to discuss ideas with someone in chemistry as well. It's somewhat difficult to really bounce ideas off my mentor when she's English.

I am retaking Chemistry AYA Science to entries: Entry 1 (teaching a major idea over time)and Entry 3 (Whole class discussion). As far as the testing center, the test itself is sent electronically to the test center. When I took mine last summer, I was sent to a specific computer that gave me the instructions and questions. Another individual who was going for Elementary Education was taking her test at the same time, but at a different computer. So I wouldn't imagine that only certain centers do various certifications. It is probably why only certain places can offer these tests. I can tell you it is very difficult and you should study EVERYTHING, you can think of, all the way up to anything related to AP Chem. If you can wait until after school lets out, I would urge you to do that; I know I wouldn't have wanted to do the test as a "day off". Good luck! Snow days have messed me up a little along with some of the teachers in my school who are also doing their Boards (in other fields).

I am mentoring a teacher for AYA Science who has videotaped his entry
3 for 1 class; he will be videoing more classes later this week.
Before he does, I have some concerns he may want to address. HOWEVER,
I'd first like to ask a couple of questions to someone who has achieved at
least a 3.0 on this entry. (I only got a 2.75...and that was 3 years
ago!) Please reply if you think you may be able to help. Thanks.
Is it me only or do any of you feel like there's no way to finish.
I still do not have a video I'm happy with. As a matter of fact,
I'm still not completely satisfied with what I do have finished. I
realize that's probably how it is, but I just don't like not being
happy with something 100%. I know I will work through nights if I
have to in order to get it all completed. I'm just feeling
overwhelmed at what I still have left to do. Any words of
encouragement from those who've passed and still had a bit to do in
these last few weeks?
I feel exactly the same way. I think at some point, I am going to have to leave what is done alone and be satisfied with it. I have run out of time trying to achieve perfection. I am sympathetic to you :)

Everybody that does national board feels like you do. Don't panic. There is no perfect lesson. Then you wouldn't have anything to write about. Hang in there and complete what you have done. Have someone help you pack your box. Good luck. virginia NBPT AYA-Science 2003.

I can relate to this!! As I took my box to the post office in 2003, I
remembered my mentor's favorite phrase: "It's never finished--only
mailed!"
Yep, the time comes when you have to let it go....

In a post, Greg Corder asked these questions:
" I am doing NBC next year and am trying to plan my entries. Has anyone had (or
know anyone with) success in physical science, chemistry, or physics?

focus on?

My answer would be that whatever some other teacher did that was successful may
not be successful for you. Their style, classroom and students are completely
different than yours. A great deal of what the assessors are looking for is
what YOU do to teach YOUR students and how YOU decided upon that lesson. How
could you take someone else's lesson and then not say "My lesson was chosen
because it worked well for some other NB teacher." You wouldn't say that and
neither would you lie if you are an ethical person.
Think about your practice. What has worked well for you? What process skills
do you use effectively? How do you already integrate technology? If you are
the accomplished teacher that we assume you are, you already do these things.
Find what worked for you and your students and work from there.
Please understand that National Boards is not a cookie cutter type program.
There's no dog-and-pony show that is tried and true that will get you to pass.

Can someone help me brainstorm some impacts on student learning from
being a grade level chairperson? Other than 'facilitaing
interdeparment communication' I'm coming up short on this one....
Thank you,
Marlene
being a grade level chair may help you to identify strengths and weaknesses of the grade level and you could impact student learning and address their needs by planning for learning field trips that support instruction, purchasing or acquiring texts and trade books that would be at their level, inviting presenters into the school that would aid their learning.

As grade level chair, do you have anything to do with budget? Do you
make any decisions about new media or technology? Do you assist
new/struggling teachers? Do you get to implement any activities
before anyone else? Do you make any curriculum decisions? What
about scheduling? Grade level chair responsibilities vary from
school to school within the same district, let alone from state to
state....be sure to state if it is not stipended or on your own
time. Also is it a rotating position or the principal "sought you
out for your outstanding leadership skills"
Madge in FL NBCT 2003
I need someone to read over this and help me. There are only 4
questions that we are to respond to and I'm to have 6 pages written.
I'm stretching it and am just to like 5 1/2.
Thank you,
Marlene

What I did was: we have interdepartmental meetings once a week and post on blackboard what we did to share with other off hours groups and so our principal knows what we talked about or shared. Then I printed what I had shared -- it was samples of my graphic organizers--folables, CRISS activities using sticky notes with organelles parts and the students had to get into the right spot where their part was to form a big cell and then I said everything that deals with the nucleus put the sticky notes on the white board in the correct place & so on. And how we used KWL. Then the teacher who types in our information talked about what I contributed to the group and how informative it was and how they others stated they could use it. So I printed out that part of our meeting with a reply from my principal. Showed collaboration & how they were going to use it in their classroom too with their students.
Evidence I had was a workshop on foldables, 1 sample work, the post from the group, and in my writing I spoke of how it impacted my students with ex. of assessment improvement shown and had an email form one of the cross curriculum people off in another hour that used it and how it helped her students.
I started this section by identifying what I did and included the standard for collaboration. If you do not do something like that (a post board for sharing you could ask your principal to do that or) just emails showing collaboration from other teachers would be good too showing the same thing).
Another item was a wokrshop I went to & shared the technology with my department people and they used it in their classes and they emailed me.
