I saw some die cast metal aircraft models at a hobby shop today. The packaging
says Model Power - Postage Stamp Planes. There are a number of different types.
Modern, WWII and WWI. The boxes also say 1/100 historically accurate
collectable. Since a B-52 and a Fokker tri-plane where in basically the same
size box I didn't believe the lettering.

Since I just got a job with a contractor at the Lockheed-Martin plant in Ft
Worth I picked up an F-16 (I also got a tour of the plant today, but that's not
topical to these lists). I have checked out the site for Model Power:

And surprisingly they do list the actual scales of the models. And a few of them
are 1/160th!!! [not the the F-16 I bought though 1/126 :-( ]. Many of the them
are close. Unfortunetly most of the WWII and WWI are not close. Check out all
the series listed, they have a picture indicating a series but all eras are
mixed in each series. If you have a need or just like cool plane models check
these out.

I heard it first from my Dad yesterday, then it was read on the news.

And the language was all wrong for Nostradamus.

It's apparently getting widespread circulation, based on the fact that
http://www.snopes.com/ is currently overloaded, but the Nostradamus
prediction is a HOAX.

Let me repeat. IT IS NOT TRUE.

Here is the info from snopes.com. In the interests of trying to keep the
peace, I implore you to forward this to anyone who sends you the
Nostradamus hoax.

Also on the news was the first reports of American thuggery as a mob
marched on a mosque in suburban Chicago (thankfully turned away) and of
assaults against middle eastern men in Indiana. I had hoped that we would
be spared this sort of hatred and senseless violence. But sadly some Americans
seem determined to behave in the worst possible way.

Claim: A 1654 Nostradamus prediction said World War III would begin with
the fall of "two brothers," a reference to the destroyed World Trade Center
towers.
Status: False.
Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2001]
"In the City of God there will be a great thunder,
Two brothers torn apart by Chaos,
while the fortress endures,
the great leader will succumb,
The third big war will begin when the big city is burning" Nostradamus 1654
Origins: The turmoil of recent events has us all scrambling, some to look
for solace and meaning, others for the terrorists responsible, and yet
others for signs that what happened could have been prevented or at least
foreseen. The 11 September 2001 attack on America destroyed not only the
two World Trade Center towers in New York City, a chunk of the Pentagon in
Washington, and caused untold loss of life, it also shook America's sense
of invulnerability. No longer do Americans presume safety in an unsafe world.
For some, that realization is an eye-opener, unsettling but necessary, in
that a child's blissful unawareness has been replaced (at great cost) with
an adult's more clear-eyed view of the world and its sometimes horrifying
ways. For others, it spells the beginning of the end, in that they equated
an illusion of safety with its reality and thus now feel their world is
ending. It is the fears of that second group that are given voice in the
Nostradamus prediction circulated on the Internet even before the dust had
settled in New York.
The French physician and astrologer Nostradamus (1503-1566) penned numerous
quatrains populated by obscure imagery that the credulous have ever after
attempted to fit to the events of their times. These predictions can often
ring somewhat true in that the images employed are so general they can be
found in almost every event of import, but by the same token, the
prophecies are never a dead-on fit because the wordings are far too
general. Not that this stops anyone from believing in them; our society's
need for mysticism runs far too deep to ever allow for that.
Those looking for the certainty of a Nostradamus prophecy come true have
been known to sledge hammer the results to force a fit by inventing
fanciful translations from the original French, bend over backwards to
assert one named term is really another, and (as in this case) outright
fabricate part or all of the prediction.
Nostradamus did not write the quatrain now being attributed to him. (One
wonders how a guy who died in 1566 could have written an item identified as
being penned in 1654 anyway.) It originated with a student at Brock
University in Canada in the 1990s, appearing on a web page essay on
Nostradamus. That particular quatrain was offered by the page's author,
Neil Marshall, as a fabricated example to illustrate how easily an
important-sounding prophecy can be crafted through the use of abstract
imagery. He pointed out how the terms he used were so deliberately vague
they could be interpreted to fit any number of cataclysmic events.
(A dissertation on a somewhat similar-sounding real prophecy of
Nostradamus' which contains the line "From the sky will come a great King
of Terror" can be found here. Note that even a liberal reading places the
events it describes in July of 1999, not September of 2001, and the same
prophecy has already long since been applied to a wide variety of different
events -- both real and imagined.)
It appears someone mistook Marshall's illustrative example for an actual
Nostradamus prophecy and, not content to let well enough alone, added "The
third big war will begin when the big city is burning." A fabrication was
thus further fabricated.
But that wasn't the end of it. More fakery was piled on in later versions
that now included all of the text quoted in the Example section above but
now concluded with:
"on the 11th day of the 9 month that...
two metal birds would crash into two tall statues...
in the new city...
and the world will end soon after"
Similarly, another enhanced version incorporates the Example text into a
more detailed prophecy:
And Nostradamus predicted this (who knows how long ago): "In the year of
the new century and nine months,
  From the sky will come a great King of Terror...
The sky will burn at forty-five degrees.
Fire approaches the great new city..."
"In the city of york there will be a great collapse,
2 twin brothers torn apart by chaos
while the fortress falls the great leader will succumb
third big war will begin when the big city is burning"
Another version asserts:
"The third great war will start when the two tall lances fall in the great
city. The day birds offer themselves up to the heavens"
The closest any true Nostradamus writing comes to any of these is the one
often cited as Century 6, Quatrain 97:

Cinq and quarante degrez ciel bruslera
Feu approcher de la grand cité neuve
Instant grand flamme esparse sautera
Quand on voudra des Normans faire preuue.
An approximate English translation would be:

Five and forty steps the sky will burn
Fire approaching the large new city
Instantly a great thin flame will leap
When someone will want to test the Normans.
Even if this is a real prophecy of Nostradamus', it simply provides more
evidence of how much shoehorning has to be performed to get one of these
vague "predictions" to fit modern occurrences. It cites no date whatsoever.
The line about a sky that "will burn at forty-five steps" is interpreted to
refer to New York City, the "forty-five steps" being the Big Apple's
latitude -- never mind that New York City is actually below the 41°
latitude mark, and that several major North American cities (e.g., Boston,
Milwaukee, Chicago, Minneapolis, Toronto, Montreal) are much closer to 45°
latitude than Gotham. As well, New York (one of North America's oldest
cities) is only "new" in the sense that its name contains the word "new" (a
criterion which describes many other of the world's large cities, such as
New Delhi), the flames resulting from the terrorist attack in New York were
anything but "thin" (or "scattered"); and nobody has a clue what "Normans"
have to do with hijacked airliners crashing into American cities.
All in all, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 is a much better fit for this
one. So is the explosion resulting from the collision of the ships Mont
Blanc and Imo in 1917, which killed thousands of people and destroyed much
of Halifax -- a city just a few degrees shy of 45° latitude. To top it all
off, this very same verse was widely cited five years ago as having
"predicted" the mysterious crash of TWA Flight 800 in July 1996.
Just once, we'd like someone to tell us what one of Nostradamus'
"prophecies" means in advance of the event it supposedly describes.

I'm in agreement with you on the use of nuclear weapons but am against
their use more because they're too controversial politically.  If we're
the first to use them we automatically brand ourselves the bad guy.  If
however we do retaliate against those nations which harbor terrorists,
there is a weapon that I understand was developed for use in Vietnam but
never launched there.  I understand that it is a bomb which produces a
cloud of gasoline vapor perhaps a mile in diameter, which it then
ignites.  It is said to produce an explosion which is as destructive as
a tactical nuclear weapon without all that politically bothersome
radiation.

I too am nervous about nuclear weapons but I think those nations foolish
enough to use them; ie. North Korea, Iran ... would be more likely to
send them as a terrorist weapon, UPS that develop a complicated and
expensive ICBM.  I don't look to the Strategic Defense Initiative to be
any help in the wars of the twenty first century.  I think Islamic
Fundamentalists will be the Nazis or Communists  of the twenty first
century and the sooner they're dealt with the better off we'll all be.

PLEASE excuse the cross post.  As some of you know the 2005 NMRA National
Convention and the National Train Show are going to be in Cincinnati, Ohio.  I
am currently putting out feelers for NSCALERS in the Cincinnati AREA.  You don't
need to be in Cincinnati proper but within 90 minutes drive time.  If you have
or know of an NSCALE home layout that is or will be ready for viewing (it does
not need to be 100% sceniced) by then PLEASE CONTACT ME OFF LIST.  I would like
to discuss the possibility of having your layouts on tours.  This will be an
opportunity to have modelers from around the world view and photograph your
layout during the convention on organized tours.  If you have operating sessions
that is something else I would like to know.  This will be the chance to be
involved in an NMRA Convention and help to CHANGE what most NSCALERS complain
about.  Please be aware that at this time I am not functioning in any sort of
“official” capacity for the NMRA, BUT am giving you a heads up to
the fac
t that I may be in the future.  Even if I don’t I will be sure to see that
the info gets passed on.  I hope to hear from ya’ll soon.  Have Fun, I Am!

        I called Con-Cor this morning and was told that the GS-4 is well into
production and is being based on the S2 4-8-4 drive with 80" drivers. He also
said that the time schedule was ahead of the announced date and it could be
released as early as Feb or March of 2002 and will be DCC ready.

On 8/27 my email was infected the  w32.badtrans.13312 @ mm virus. I got it
from John Coots on the n-scale list. This virus sends an infected reply to
every unread email in my inbox. What makes this bad is the fact that it is a
reply from someone you sent an email to which makes it look legitimate. I
found a fix for it at

apologize for the problems this virus may have caused.

Hello ALL - like Life Insurance after the need - I went out and bought
McAfee's application suite "Office" spent hours with it - subscribed to
their VIRUS ONLINE and devote 72 minutes on the phone today with their $3.00

Okay kids,

Excuse the cross postings.  Here's our chance to get PERIOD correct,
1900-1980, decals of chalk markings and grafitti for our railroads.  All I
need are some photo's, GIF's, JPG's, BMP's or what ever.  If you know the
dates include them also.  They will be used for referance only so no need to
worry about them being published (unless it would be in the advertising and
we would ask permisssion first of course).  The modern era modelers have all
kinds of them BUT we have little or none.  It must be prototypical  NO MAKE
UP STUFF.  If we can gather enough of it we will get some made up.  Thanks in
advance.

Hi, I'm new to Nscale. I did a few HO layouts in the distant past. I
puchased a Kato F7 set and some newer Kato locos and rolling stock.
All the new stuff has Kato knuckle couplers, while they decided to
put Rapidos on all the F7 set cars. What Microtrains part number do I
need to use to change out all the F7 set cars? Thanks.
