Mt. Airy, North Carolina, has a wonderful antique Coca Cola sign on the side of a building on Main Street. The sign is clearly visible from the street and is the largest of its kind that I have personally run across.
"Ghost" signs as they are called out West, are very popular tourist attractions on Route 66. Moreover, they are popular sites in other cities as well. The purpose of this site is to gain visibility for Mt. Airy's historic Coca Cola sign in hopes it will one day be restored.
The sign features the slogans "Delicious and Refreshing" across the top, and "Relieves Fatigue" on the left-hand side. It also features the price prominantly "5¢" on the lower right-hand corner.
Mt. Airy is the childhood home of Andy Griffith and the real-life inspiration for Mayberry. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the original sign in Andy Griffith's hometown was restored?
Photos of restored Coca Cola signs from other cities are posted in our Photos section to give you an idea of what these "ghost" signs look like once they are restored to their original beauty. If you have a photo of a restored Coca Cola sign, or another shot of the Mt. Airy sign, you are welcome to post it!
