Dear Mt Pleasant,

We are looking for a reliable person to walk our dog during the holidays. We
are willing to pay the going rate.

As an alternative, a family could enjoy having our dog in their home. She is
small, has stayed at other people home's before, and has a friendly attitude.

Thanks for your help.

Dear Friends, the work has begun on moving the braces at the old Deauville (at gov expense, with a bill to the owner). Soon, we ought to have Mt Pleasant street open once again.  Bests Jim

Here is the update from DCRA Dir Argo:

Councilmember Graham

We have engaged a contractor to do the work on this property, which entails moving the braces that are holding up the historic façade out of the public space and onto the private property. They began site prep work began Friday, but the real work begins this week and will take about two weeks to complete. It will entail closing Mt. Pleasant Street on two occasions for the crane that is needed to facilitate bracing the structure. DCRA's Enforcement Division is working with DDOT to obtain the necessary street closure permits.  DDOT will have to respond regarding the pedestrian walkway.

Let me know if I can provide additional information,

Linda

I typically answer emails before 9 AM on weekdays. If you email me after that, it is likely that you will hear from me the next weekday. If there is a need to communicate prior to that, you may wish to call me. For most effective communication, please use my direct email address: jim@...

Greetings,

There are three ways you can support the Emergence Community Arts Collective this holiday season (besides just making a tax-deductible donation at www.campaign.ecacollective.org):

Eat out tonight - Monday December 7th - at the Austin Grill.  ECAC has been selected for a First Monday Community Service event by the Austin Grill at 750 E St. NW.  Dine at the Austin Grill on December 7th between 5 and 9pm and 20% of your tab (alcohol not included) goes to the ECAC.  Don’t have time to stay?  Purchase a gift card between 5 and 9pm and we still get the benefits.  Hope to see you there!

Visit our Holiday Gift Bazaar and Bake Sale Friday December 11th from 5-9 & Saturday December 12th from 10-4

Shop early at the ECAC this weekend.  We’ll feature handmade crafts, new kitchen appliances, coupons for services from yoga to legal assistance, and many other items.  We’ll also have two DVDs that will make great gifts – “Infinity The Ultimate Trip” and “2012 The Odyssey”(while supplies last). Now through December 11th you can donate gift items and baked goods to the ECAC.  This is a good opportunity to promote your crafts or services.  A downloadable catalog will be available so that purchases can be made online after the sale.

Attend a Benefit Workshop: Understanding and Practicing Forgiveness on Wednesday December 16th from 7:00 – 9:30pm

Our approach will be to open with a conversation, present relevant steps to practicing forgiveness, and then to look for the willingness within the group to demonstrate the actual practice of forgiveness of another, of an institution, or of oneself.  Time permitting, we will close with a brief discussion of the experience.  Al Lingo is a practicing Christian and a Buddhist, a protestant minister and a lay dharma teacher in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh.  He lives in and supports The Mindfulness Practice Center of Atlanta in Georgia, and he teaches psychosynthesis, a spiritual psychology, in the American public and abroad.  This workshop will be a benefit for ECAC in its funding drive to meet its financial needs for 2009.
Donation: $25

The ECAC is located at 733 Euclid St. NW, 1/2 block from Howard University.  For more information about our programs call (202) 462-2285 or visit www.campaign.ecacollective.org.

See you soon,
Sylvia

Winter Weather Update: Precipitation has remained a mix of rain and snow in the
District up until this point, now changing over to mostly snow. We are currently
in the peak period of likely precipitation. Although an inch of snow has likely
fallen, very little of it has stuck to the ground so far. This is mostly due to
ground temperatures remaining well above freezing. After dark tonight, when
surfaces cool further, there is a chance of some frozen precipitation sticking.
Another inch of snow is possible in the late afternoon and early evening, before
tapering off mid-evening. As far as accumulation is concerned, the crucial
question is whether the system is gone from the area by the time surfaces
freeze. If so, there will be little change from right now. If not, there could
be slick spots and some travel issues to be concerned with tonight. Air
temperatures have remained slightly above expectations; they are currently 35°
with a 22° wind chill. Temperatures tonight may not get down to the previously
predicted 27°. If you need to drive, please do so carefully. /KK

DISTRICT SNOW TEAM TACKLES THE SEASON’S FIRST STORM

Motorists Advised to Drive with Caution

The District’s Snow Team began spreading salt on city streets, bridges and
overpasses this morning and are scheduled to continue through the night in
anticipation falling temperatures. The team of Department of Public Works (DPW)
and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) snow plow operators and salt
spreaders is in a full deployment, consisting of more than 100 heavy and 80
light trucks working throughout the District. The weather forecast indicates the
storm will end around 7pm.

“Snow began falling fast and heavy around 11 am and will continue until about
7 pm,” said DPW Director William O. Howland. “DPW and DDOT crews are
covering main and residential streets with salt.”

“Current forecasts indicate temperatures to be around 27 degrees later this
evening,” said DDOT Director Gabe Klein. “Motorists are advised to proceed
with caution as driving conditions may be slippery .”

DPW and DDOT remind visitors and residents to:

Remember that driving on ice is significantly different than driving on snow.
Use extreme caution and maintain safe speeds and distances from other vehicles.
Remember even a 4-wheel drive SUV does not perform well in ice and additional
safety measure should be followed.

Be aware of road conditions, particularly black ice which can be deceptive in
its appearance giving the driver a false sense of security on the road.
Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good
condition. Bridge decks will ice up sooner than the adjacent pavement.

Remember to keep a safe distance from emergency and snow vehicles and please use
caution when attempting to pass a snowplow. Give the drivers plenty of room to
safely do their jobs.

Clear all the snow and ice from your vehicle's windows and lights - even the
hood and roof - before driving.

Help your elderly or disabled neighbors remove snow from steps and sidewalks.
Clear catch basins and fire hydrants.

Please do not put snow in the street. Put all cleared snow, from parked cars and
sidewalks, in the "tree box," front yard, or between the curb and sidewalk.

Remember to clear vehicles of all snow and ice including the tops before
traveling on roadways.

Residents of the District:

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty along with District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Gabe Klein and Department of Public Works (DPW) Director William O. Howland, Jr. announced the city's readiness as the first threat of snow approaches the District.

"The District is prepared and poised to deploy for the 2009-2010 snow season.  DDOT and DPW have been preparing for months readying equipment, procuring salt, improving routes, and training personnel," said Mayor Fenty.  "The city is ready and on alert for the season's first threat of bad weather."

Planning for winter weather begins in the summer, far in advance of the first snow fall.  Coordination efforts include servicing equipment, inspecting vehicles, training personnel, stocking supplies, filling salt domes and evaluating deployment plans and route configurations.

The District Snow Team will be using improved route plans that were implemented last year which divide the city's neighborhoods into smaller, more manageable routes.  Additional equipment is ready and personnel have been trained.

The District has 330 pieces of equipment and 750 personnel available for any given storm.  This includes additional contract plows, if necessary, for major weather events.

“The District monitors forecasts and weather predictions constantly over the winter months in anticipation of any adverse weather,” said DDOT Director Gabe Klein.  “Current forecasts indicate minor snow and ice in the District but temperatures are anticipated to go below freezing on Saturday night.  We will treat the roadways, as necessary, throughout the storm.”

The deployment plan for this weekend’s storm includes 107 heavy trucks, 82 light trucks, and activation of the salt domes.  Snow command and fleet operations centers will be open early Saturday morning.

The District's 5 salt domes are filled to capacity with 40,000 tons of salt.  In addition, there are two 15,000 gallon tanks of brine on hand and four tanker trucks that will be used in advance of forecasted storms.

"We are ready for the season and want our residents and businesses to be ready, too," said DPW Director Howland.  "It is important to spread salt or non-clumping kitty litter on sidewalks once the storm hits.  This will make clearing sidewalks a lot easier after the storm."  He also asked residents and businesses to clear sidewalk entrances, nearby catch basin openings, and the area surrounding hydrants of snow, sleet and ice to prevent possible injuries to pedestrians.

Director Howland noted that DPW will suspend leaf collection on Saturday, December 5, to allow staff to prepare the trucks for the weekend's predicted snowfall.  Leaf collection employees and equipment form the backbone of DPW's snow fighting team; so when snow is predicted, leaf collection trucks are taken out of service to have plows and salt spreaders mounted on them.

DDOT and DPW remind commuters and residents to:

*          Remember that driving on ice is significantly different than driving on snow.

*          Use extreme caution and maintain safe speeds and distances from other vehicles.

*          Remember even a 4-wheel drive SUV does not perform well in ice and additional safety measures should be followed.

*          Be aware of road conditions, particularly black ice which can be deceptive in its appearance giving the driver a false sense of security on the road.

*          Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridge decks will ice up sooner than the adjacent pavement.

*          Remember to keep a safe distance from emergency and snow vehicles and please use caution when attempting to pass a snowplow.  Give the drivers plenty of room to safely do their jobs.

*          Clear all the snow and ice from your vehicle's windows and lights - even the hood and roof - before driving.

*          Help your elderly or disabled neighbors remove snow from steps and sidewalks.

*          Clear catch basins and fire hydrants.

*          Please do not put snow in the street.  Put all cleared snow, from parked cars and sidewalks, in the "tree box," front yard, or between the curb and sidewalk.

Be safe,

Kevin B. Twine
