Welcome to the Montezuma Nature Club, based at the Montezuma Audubon Center (MAC), 2295 Rt. 89, Savannah, NY (about 1.7 miles north of the Village in southeastern Wayne County). This free Yahoo group is for anyone interested in nature, birding and related activities around the Montezuma Wetlands Complex north of Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes Region. Emphasis is on sharing information about the species and habitats found at the Audubon Center and the Wetlands Complex. Members can post photos, ask questions, set up informal field trips, or find out about formal programs and trips at the MAC.
The Montezuma Audubon Center is a four-seasons nature center with a director, education manager, naturalists, and volunteers who help present programs, maintain the live herpetofauna exhibits, and do publicity, office work and landscaping for wildlife. School groups can schedule visits anytime during the academic year. Snowshoes can be rented during the winter. For more information, phone (315) 365-3588. The Montezuma Wetlands Complex includes the Montezuma Audubon Center (Audubon New York), Northern Montezuma Wildlife Management Area (N.Y.S. Department of Environmental Conservation), the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service), and Carncross Saltmarsh Preserve (The Nature Conservancy). Ducks Unlimited is also involved in wetland restoration projects. The Friends of Montezuma is a separate non-profit support and advocacy group that promotes conservation education, public use, wildlife management, and habitat restoration within the Montezuma Wetlands Complex.
