RE: Statistical Thinking

Marjorie –

These topics may fall outside the scope of your course, but I’d suggest some public service presentations on interpretation of the information that considers more issues with experimental design, like:

Correlation/causation

Controls

Repetition of studies

Alternative, complementary hypotheses

Subject: [Monmouthtowngown] Statistical Thinking

Hi All,

I listed possible projects for my Statistical Thinking Citizenship course on the website. In case you missed it, the list is given below.  Do not expect complex data analyses from the students.  These students are not statisticians, but they should be able to do simple analyses.

In the course, the students will be preparing “Public Service Presentations” on statistical issues – such as “what does statistical significance mean”, “how are unemployment rates figured”, “what exactly is the margin of error”, “Beware misleading graphs”, etc.  If you have a topic in mind, let me know.  We will post the time and place for our Public Service Presentations on the listserve.

If you have questions, please contact me.

Thanks,

Marjorie Bond

Possible projects for this course include:

  1. Working with a client to develop a survey, administer the survey, analyze the results of the survey, and write a report/give presentation.

  1. Analyze existing data for a client and write a report/give presentation.

  1. Interpret and clarify statistical information that a client may be receiving.

  1. Help a client better use existing data that he/she may have.

  1. Make presentations about basic statistical knowledge that every citizens should know.
