Subject: Krylon and decals - round 2

I just finished round 2 of Krylon Kristal Klear over decals.  I trimmed a decal pretty much as I would to apply to a model.  To eliminate the known problems between Klear and other paints, I applied the decal to an unpainted plastic test sheet.  I applied decalset to a portion of that decal.  Since James mentioned he sprays his decals with Klear before applying, I sprayed Klear on a second decal before applying it to the test sheet.

I had very small wrinkles on the very edge of the first decal, but only where there was a small amount of transparent decal material.  One spot where there was some transparent material left between parts of the decal the decal wrinkled slightly.  Any areas with colour were stayed flat.  The edge wrinkling was minor and may be fixed with a wet sand and second coat of Klear.  The decalset made no difference to the wrinkling.

The results with the pre-cleared decal were the same as without pre-clearing.  I didn't trim this one and all the transparent areas around the outside of the decal lifted and wrinkled badly.  The coloured areas remained flat.  I also noticed that the pre-cleared decal didn't loosen from the backing as easily as the un-cleared decal.

So, the results pretty much verified what I found the with the first test.  The Krylon Klear was attacking the paint to wrinkle the whole decal.  Since the Klear did not attack the decal I sprayed before applying, I would think that the Klear does not attack the decal itself, but the activated adhesive.  Why this only happens under transparent areas of a decal I am not sure, but knowing it does may save a lot of aggravation.

Now, I applied a fairly heavy coat of Klear, heavier than I would painting a model, because I wanted to see the result.  Applying several light coats may help the problem of the edge wrinkling, or the whole wrinkling problem, so that will be part of the next experiment.

did you clear the body before you put the decals on? and how long did you let the decals dry after you applied them? I've had this same problem in the past with my decals lifting around the edges. So I heard you have to give the decals a slick surface to adhear to. So I started clearcoating the body first then putting the decals on then clearing over the decals. I havent had a problem since.

I ran a little experiment.  I had some decals from the Cartoon Network Monte, so I took the 2 and 9 and installed them on a sheet of plastic.  I didn't trim them as I would for a model.  I coated the 2 with decalset and left the 9 as is.  I let them sit for a day and then coated them with Krystal Klear.  The Klear seemed to lift the clear areas of the decals, especially around the edges.  On the 2 the coloured areas stayed flat and on the 9 only a couple of small wrinkles in the coloured area.

I am going to run the experiment again only this time I am going to trim the clear areas.  I think I will try one large decal and coat half with decalset for the next test.

While I thought the Klear didn't lift the decals on my Earnhardt car, a couple of the clear areas inside letters and one headlight did have bubbles.  I blamed it on the old decals because they didn't want to lay down, but maybe it was the Klear after all.  In the mean time, no more Klear over decals for me unless I can get some consistent good results in tests.

The poop is, I hadn't done a model in about 15 years (late '80s) so I bought this one thinking I would start building again.  I wasn't into heavy detailing, just nice paint detailing, so it is done out-of-the-box.  So, 20 more years later, I am going to finish it that way, paint and decals.

I have attached a pic of the boxtop.  The dark colour looks black but is blue.

I started this many years ago (1990s) and it ended up put away when I stopped building.  I stumbled across it last week and decided to pull it out and finish it off.  The chassis is done so all that needs to be done is finish the body paint, decals, assemble the body and stick it on the chassis.

Looking at it now, it is hard to believe I painted the small details with a brush with the naked eye.  Damn, I had to put it under the magnifying glass just to see some of what I had painted. LOL  Amazing how fast the old eyes go once they start.

I was looking at it and thinking how much different it would be if I did it today and considered breaking it down, but I don't want to get into stripping it.  Box stock is good enough for this one.

Yours is very well detailed.

Here is what  Jeff Foxworthy has to say about Canadians:

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from September through May, you may live in Canada.

If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you may live in Canada.

If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you may live in Canada.

If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you may live in Canada.

If 'Vacation' means going anywhere South of Detroit for the weekend, you may live in Canada.

If you measure distance in hours, you may live in Canada.

If you know several people who have hit a moose more than once, you may live in Canada.

If you have switched from 'heat' to 'A/C' in the same day and back again, you may live in Canada.

If you can drive 90 km/hr through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching, you may live in Canada.

If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both unlocked, you may live in  Canada.

If you carry jumper cables in your car and your wife knows how to use them, you may live in Canada.

If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you may live in Canada.

If the speed limit on the highway is 80 km -- you're going 95 and everybody is passing you, you may live in Canada.

If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow, you may live in Canada.

If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction, you may live in Canada.

If you have more miles on your snow blower than your car, you may live in Canada.

If you find -2 degrees 'a little chilly', you may live in Canada.

If you actually understand these jokes, forward them to all your friends, you definitely are Canadian and proud to be.

Didn't that thing originate from some ".org" host? First off, noone will EVER send a request for any personal info...especially something along the line of usernames and passwords. Gee whiz, that's spam 101 guys and my advice to anyone receiving this? Report it immediately to Yahoo and they can hopefully get some sort of ISP trace on it. That stuff's freakin dangerous. Just my 2 cents~**~

Well, it has been a while since I bought any Future for clearing models so imagine my surprise when all I could find is Pledge "with Future" floor finish.  I did some looking online and apparently it has been over a year since the change.  It looks to be the same product, but has anyone used the "new" Future?
