Hello Again Scott...
The deformation is actually on the decklid surface. I suspect it is
from the constant back and forth and side to side movement of the
antenna during normal driving conditions. The issue with the 2ØØ2
Jetta is the way the decklid opens. I am limited as to how and where
I can mount a "decklid" type mount. Otherwise, when opening the
trunk, the antenna will hit the roof or the sides of the car.
The other issue with the Diamond mount was, there wasn't very
much "lip" to actually grab on to with the new Jetta. Plus the fact
that there is a generous amount of "sealant" that you must compress
before the mount actual becomes tight to the decklid.
Anyway, I opted out for a Glass mount antenna...

Good suggestion. I've populated the database and uploaded some images of
my mobile install.
Seems you have a good number of members. I just joined today as a result
of one of your messages in another group. Looking forward to some
stimulating discussion.

I currently have a Ford Focus. I am going to be installing my TM-261
Kenwood Mobile Radio there. there is not a remote head unit for this
radio. But as I look at the car there is no straight surfaces.
Wondering if anyone has the same car and might have some ideas.

I was able to get a little assistance from hams on a local repeater.
About all they did was confirm my own suspicions, either a bad antenna or a
bad SWR meter. While I considered the depressing possibility of a bad radio,
these hams were certain the radio was okay. I went to HRO and borrowed some
antennas. After trying several antennas with similar results, awesome SWR on
2m with awful SWR on 440, I decided to borrow another SWR meter. Using a new
SWR meter, I was able to determine that my new MFJ SWR meter was not
calibrated properly. I continued checking the antennas to see which one
would tune up best. Ironically, it was MY OWN antenna that provided the
lowest SWR. I decided to return my fancy MFJ SWR meter and bought the one
that I had borrowed, a Diawa CN-460.
There was one thing that I noticed through all of my testing: The
advertized power out, be it 5W, 10W, 20W, or 50, was only applicable on the
center of the band. Transmitting on the edges of the bands yielded less
power. For example, 146MHz gave me 50W or 20W. 144MHz and 148MHz gave me
about 35W or 15W. Has anyone else seen this kind of behavior?
I've
heard of a similar problem with a comet thru-the-window type antenna.
There was no defrosting elements near the pads but the antenna
performed poorly. It turned out the auto glass had
something conductive in it. see if a side window works any
better, you can get replacement adhesive kits for the Comet.
Borrow a friends mag mount dual band to see if SWR comes down.
Dollars to doughnuts you'll have a good reading.

Hi,
I recently purchased an FT-90R dual band
mobile rig. I only
had a 2m antenna until today. I don't transmit on 440 'cause
there
just isn't any action around here. So I know I didn't
overload
anything. Anyway, I bought a Comet dual band antenna and an
MFJ
SWR/Wattmeter. Everything looks great on 2m. I flick the
SWR
switch to 440 and key up on 440 and my SWR goes through the
roof.
The antenna is the type in which the rod forms a coil in the
middle. So I know I don't have an open coil. It's tough to
fault
the antenna.
I had intended to permanently install the SWR
meter, so I have
it connected to a six-foot coax. Could this be a problem?
Finally, I hate to think that my brand new
radio has a jacked
up 440-band. But what else could be the problem? Since
I've never
operated on dual band, I can't say I've ever seen both bands just
magically have great SWR on two bands sharing one antenna.
I intend to visit HRO tomorrow and do a
little troubleshooting
with a different antenna and another SWR meter (in case this one
has
a problem). Does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks,
Scott, KE4WMF

I used the same Diamond Antenna mount that you use but had to remove
it from my 02 Jetta because it was starting to deform the trunk lid.
That's odd! I use the little aluminum bars that came with the mounts. The set screws dig into IT instead of the trunk lid... sort of distributes the pressure. My photos don't feature the dual band antenna... just a couple of whips. I'm picking up the dual bander today. It has a *little* more drag than a whip... but not much. What kind of deformation are you suffering? Pinpoint from the set screws? Or is the entire mount deforming the lid? Where is the mount and what direction was the deformation happening?
You might try a mount that places the antenna in the center of the trunk lip, hiding the antenna base in the draft of the roofline. Then the wind won't hit the heavier parts of the antenna. I'm surprised you have the problems with the glass mounted antenna. I used to have a Larsen glass mount that was pretty aerodynamic... no problems.
Hi Scott...

I was using a larger dual band antenna than yours and I suspect that
it might have been the culprit. I changed over to "through the
window" mounts for VHF/UHF and APRS. Only thing is now I get a
tremendous amount of whistling at high speed. I travel in Michigan
daily to and from work and the speed limit is 70 mph but to keep up
with traffic you need to 75 mph to 80 mph...
Now I am pondering as to what to change too next...

Hi,
> Does that radio have cross band capabilities?
No. It only works one band at a time. However, you can do
half-duplex... allowing you to work FM satellites. I thought about
a crossband radio like the FT-8900R. But I had to ask myself, "How
often would I REALLY use crossband repeat?" Plus, money is tight.
The FT-90R is on sale for about $270. My car is all about stealth
and looking stock. The fact that the display fits in the ashtray is
what sold me on the FT-90R. Plus, if I decide to get an FT-100D in
the future, the two radios will match. Sort of petty, but I show my
car and it would look better.
> And where the heck did you take the picture of the rear of your

Actually, this photo proves the earth IS flat. See the
edge? ;-) You're correct. I was on the edge of a building. Most
sunlight photos of my car have too many shadows and lighting
issues. I did the shade photos with the washout on purpose. That
way I could eliminate the industrial background quite easily. I
took these pictures of my Passat
(http://www.stealthtdi.com/Passat.html) in the same place. It was a
different time of day, so the washout wasn't the same. I angled the
car for a better background.

Hi,
My name is Scott, KE4WMF. I'm a Technician who's been
operating on my 2m HT since 1995. I had slowed down A LOT since
hooking up the HT in the car was getting tedious... especially for
short trips. So I recently purchased my first true mobile rig, an
FT-90R. I've uploaded photos and placed them in the following
folder:

90R/KE4WMF&.src=gr&.view=
WOW! I didn't think the URL was that long. But they're
there. Also, I'm going to study during my upcoming deployment to
get the code down and take exams up to Extra.

For my install I did something whacky with my v7a. Alot of my friends have copied me also :) I went to the local auto parts store and bought window mirror glue. I then smothered the remote kits mounting bracket for the head with the glue and mounted it to my driver side window upper right corner. I need to take some pics it looks nifty..

I'm interested in seeing how you installed the V7A. I have one of these and I also have another call now. As you guessed, I've not installed it yet.
I actually thought about getting the faceplate kit until I realized one still needed to plug the mic into the radio body. What would be the point I thought if I stil had to do that.
The kind of car I purchased is a '95 Hyundai Elantra
There is one of those 'catch-all' slots under the car's stereo radio. But just looking and guessing, I'm not sure the V7A would fit there without doing some cutting.

Hi Group...
I started an album showing how I mounted my IC-706MIIg in my 02
Jetta TDI. Presently the album shows the control head as it sits in
my vehicle.
I will upload pics of the main transmitter mounting, the screwdriver
antenna controller and finally, the High Sierra antenna and mount.
The weather has been a bit on the "uncooperative" side as of late and
one hates to take pictures of a black car covered in salt and God
knows what else...
If anyone has questions, feel free to fire away... I did run into
several "obstacles" encountered along the way...
More to follow...

I have a pic of a rack or shelf I made for my old '89 Buick LeSabre.
Of course I don't have that car anymore, but it was still a neat
project and functioned well.
It was also designed with one of the Doplar DF kits in mind. Heck,
that's why I designed the thing. To hold this unit and my mobile rig
and still had one more slot for a scanner or some other unit.
Perhaps I'll post the pic if I can find it.

cYes please post installation pics. I am uncertain of the file size I
will figure it out. Might have to go with a smaller pixels. But, they
are welcome. PLus put them into a new folder labeled under what they
