Peace and Justice Forum - 1/15/06   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #31 of 107 |
The ELCA (Lutheran) Minneapolis and Saint Paul Area Synods Peace with Justice Committee is sponsoring a series of forums which we thought would be interesting to ECAPC members.
Also included at the end of this message is information about a breakfast on Jan. 25 sponsored by People of Faith Peacemakers discussing the question "Do wars rely on Christian Churches for their support?”

----------------------------------------------------------------

You are invited to a Peace with Justice Forum on January 15, 2006

Perspectives on the Just War Tradition

Speakers:  Al Bostelmann & Verlyn Smith

Twin Cities Peace with Justice Forum Series from 12:30-2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 15, 2006 at Central Lutheran Church, 3rd Ave and 12th St, Minneapolis, next to the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Lunch available ($7.00).  Validated parking is available in the Central parking lot/ramp on the south side of the church.

The Just War tradition has existed in Christianity almost as long as the Nonviolent tradition.  Yet today most laypeople, pastors, priests, bishops (and even theologians) lack knowledge of the criteria for "just wars" as developed by the early Church fathers. Few seminaries cover the standards for just war in the student curriculum (not to mention the theology and spirituality of Christian nonviolence).  Consequently, over the centuries, the operational practice within Christianity has been: 'give us your war and we'll justify it'.
So, just what are the standards or criteria for Christian 'just war'?
How well has the Just War Theory served the Christian movement?

The speakers will cover the various Just War standards as developed by the early Church fathers and more recent theologians and offer a couple of different perspectives on this timely issue.

Al Bostelmann is a clinical social worker and a combat-trained infantry veteran.  He is a member of Vets for Peace, Lutheran Peace Fellowship, and is active in the Every Church a Peace Church movement.

Verlyn Smith is a retired ELCA pastor and social-justice advocate.  He has been active in many peace with justice organizations including the Nonviolent Peaceforce, Lutheran Peace Fellowship, and the Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers.

This forum series is sponsored by the ELCA Minneapolis and Saint Paul Area Synods Peace with Justice Committee.

Upcoming Forums (3rd Sunday of each month, except as noted, at 12:30 at Central Lutheran Church):

Feb 19, 2006                Empire and the Radical Nonviolence of Jesus – Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer
Mar 19, 2006               The Church's Ministry of Reconciliation – Dr. Richard Bliese
