Hi, I am located in north central Missouri, and looking into homeschooling
our 3 yr old grandson, who is presently living full time with us. This child
starting reading to us when he was 30 months old, and is presently demanding
more and more 'schoolwork', which he just loves to do, both on and off the
computer. At the present time we are working on reading, adding and
subtracting, map directions, printing, drawing, amd some music appreciation.
I am ok with the basics-reading, 'riting, and 'rithmatic-but soon I am going
to need help with creating a good learning environment for learning, and
also to find out what Missouri requires for homeschooling.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Charles,
Glad to "meet" you. We were just your way last night for a home school
boys basketball team game!! In Norwood actually at Reggie Kelly's
church. A wonderful gym there.
Sonlight has a great website - do you have full internet access? If so
it is:
http://www.sonlight-curriculum.com
Let me know if you can't get this and I'll do a full explanation on it!
Basically, you study a theme (American History/20th century/10-40
window, etc) and use whole books to build your studies on. We
absolutely love it. No boring dry textbooks here!! The study guides
are wonderful - rich full helps. And the writing curriculum follows the
History/Geography lessons so it is a double plus. Really, you have to
see it to appreciate it. Definitely check out the website and ask for a
catalog - the catalog is excellent reading in itself!! Feel free to ask
my any specifics.
God bless,
Kathy in Lebanon
Hi Mary Bransford,

about the Robinson cirriculum, thanks.
Mary and I live about half way between Ava, MO and Forsyth, MO. We have been

With so many new people on the list I thought it might be a good idea to
reintroduce my family. Who knows maybe someone even knows where Shell
Knob is :-)
We have homeschooled for 12 years and our oldest son has graduated
collage in 1999, he now works as an electronic engineering technician
for the Motorola corporation.
That leaves me with 2 boys still being homeschooled 17 (almost 18) ,
16,
they are using the Robinson Curriculum.
Then there are my 2 little boys 4 (almost 5) and 4 . We adopted them as
infants and have not yet started any school with them other than nature
hikes , being read to, and helping in the house :-)
So there you have it in a nutshell, homeschool 12 years, Shell Knob
MO.,5 boys .
Welcome to all the new folks.

Hi Kellie, thanks for writing, my wife Mary, and I, are new to
homeschooling,
and would appreciate any and all information, that we can get. Mary and I
have raised 9 children (some turned out ok, some didn't), we are now
entrusted
with the lives of two of our grandchildren (which we have adopted), and we
are
looking at other options (than public schools) for their education.
We live in Ava, MO. Ava is located, about half way, between Springfield and
West Plains, in South, Central, Missouri. I have heard of Festus, but I have
no
idea where it is located.
Our boy's ages, are 5 and 3, please keep us posted as to any and all
information
that you may have on this subject.

Hi Kellie,
I am Rachael, and I ama homeschooling mom also. We are in the Rock
Hill/Webster area so that isnt too far from you I dont think. If you are
interested, I run a playgroup that meets every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the
month at 10:00 am at Kirkwood Road Christian Church Tomarrow is one of those
times, although its probably too short of notice for you, you are welcome to
come.
Also, I belong to the Central County Homeschool Support Group, which also
happens to meet at the same place (not affilated with the church, they are
just kind enough to donate the space).
If you are interested let me know! After tonight we are switching servers,
so my new email address will be sugarcreek_2000@....
Welcome to the list!

Hi! My name is Kellie. I homeschool my two daughters
Kaylin age 9, and Jessica age 7. This is our second
year. We really enjoy it. I am involved in a local
support group but would love to get to know other
Missouri homeschoolers. We are in Festus. Where are
you all from? Anyone in my area? I enjoy making new
friends. I will look forward to hearing from you. God
bless you all.

Hi Cathy,
I am from St. Louis, and we are part of several different groups here-- I
just pick and choose activities from each. My sons aren't as big as yours,
but I think you would find our group helpful-- we go to the Central County
Homeschool Support Group, we meet at Kirkwood Road Christian Church (not
affiliated with the church, they just donate the space to us). I am the new
person contact person, so you are welcome to call me at (314) 963-7307. I am
also part of a homeschool field trip group, which has an email ist called
StLHomeeduc@onelist.com. We go on field trips about once a month, if you
like I could ask the moderator if you could join the list. Lastly, I run a
playgroup every first and third Thursday mornings at 10. You are welcome to
attend-- there are smaller kids, but one of the moms has a gifted son (I
think he is Kg age but doing much higher levels of work) so she might be able
to point you to some resources in that area. I myself was a gifted kid, and
I know what youman about the teasing. It would be my personal advice to get
him out of there, because you can't love to learn if you are miserable,
right? DOn't worry about being a single parent, there are lots of parents
that do it that way. I work part time, and my kids come to work with me
sometimes (thier Dad and I work opposite shifts most of the time).
Anyway, I hope that helps! Good luck! Please call me if you are interested
in any of those things, and that goes for anyone else on the list too--
Rachael
Hi, Cathy!
I am in St. Charles, MO. My son is gifted with a verbal learning disability.
He knows what he's thinking but has a hard time getting it across. Believe
me, you CAN sue the school. I could tell you some horror stories here. I
just finally pulled mine out in November. I had had enough!

Hi Cathy,
I'm not in the St. Louis area and have never experienced the situations you
have; so I'm afraid I'm not much help. There may be lists for gifted
children and even single-parenting homeschooling if you search for them on
OneList. I did a quick search and found two "1GiftedMoms" and
"HomeschoolingSingle".

I thought I posted yesterday, but it doesn't show
so I will try again. I have an 11yob with a 150+ IQ
and and the social skills of an 8yo. He's currently
2 years ahead in school (7th grade) and is having
a horrid time with teasing. If I experienced at work
the stuff he deals with every day at school, I'd file a
lawsuit. I did homeschool him in the 2nd grade and
it was pretty much an unschooling format...at the end
of the year is when he was identified as gifted. I am
seriously considering beginning Homeschooling on
Jan 14th, the end of the semester. As a single parent,
I am looking for support from either others who have
homeshcooled and worked outside the home or a group
that we could participate in activities with. I am
planning on enrolling him in The American School high
school program by correspondence.
any input would be valued.
Thanks in advance.

PBS aired an episode of Mister Roger's Neighborhood this morning
which STRONGLY focuses on EVOLUTION!!! Our immediate responses are
futile!!!
This episode was opened up with Mr Rogers sitting at his kitchen table.
He then brought out his dinosaurs and building blocks. His exact quote was
as follows:
"Do you know what these (dinosaurs)are? These are dinosaurs. They lived
here many, many
years ago, even before any people lived here. They were the first thing to
ever live here!"
This is very disturbing to me, and I know that it will be just as disturbing
to some of you, so PLEASE respond immediately to PBS.
Theiir website is: http://www.pbs.org
Again, I encourage to respond to this RIGHT AWAY!! Our children are very
limited to what they can view on TV anyway, and now even a station aimed
directly at/for our children (in the a.m anyway)is teaching evolution!!
Thank you for your immediate responses to this. A sense of urgency is
neccesary!!
Sincerely,
Patte
Patti,
Thanks for sending me to HSLDA, from what they have on their site I
don't have to officially start my little ones till they are 7.
I do think this is the best law I have ever seen.
In KY it was 6 and I know many ps children had to repeat 1st grade
because they were not ready at that age.
I am very greatful we are now in MO because my 4 year old is ALL boy and
then some , maybe this will give him more time to mature.

Hi Mary,
I'll look later and see if I can find the law on the internet. Basically
you do not have to do any reporting to anyone that you are homeschooling.
The registration with the local school district is optional and NOT
recommended by HSLDA. You are to homeschool 1000 hours, 600 of which must
be in core subjects. You are also to maintain some sort of means to show
work, either by portfolio or standardized testing. None of this is to be
submitted to anyone. The only way it can be obtained from you is by court
order if a judge is shown just cause of educational neglect.
From where did you move? We moved here 9 years ago from California.

Hi Lyn,
I don't even know how many people are on this list now; yours is the first
post I've seen. I thought it would be a great way of passing along
legislative information.
I'm Patti. We have six children ages 6-17 and have homeschooled for 13
years. I have a boy "graduating" this year. Boy, that feels weird. We live
near Springfield.

I look forward to sharing with you all. What have you all done exciting this
