Thursday, May 24 - 6-8:30PM
Lir on Boylston by Hynes Convention Ctr T

Meet like-minded progressives and get connected to great social justice
organizations in Boston. Haven't been to a Socializing for Justice event? It’s
time to meet the friendly faces of the group that’s grown to over 2000
members, hosted 125+ events and fostered hundreds of connections since our
founding 5 1/2 years ago.

Join us if you are ready to go beyond allies and build a cross-issue progressive
movement.

Register at www.sojust.org - Newcomers always welcomed!

Cost: $5-$20 collected at the door.
(every $10 includes raffle ticket for a $25 iTune's gift card)
Complimentary appetizers will be provided.

This is not a meeting - it's a fun networking social!
No Program. No Speaker. Just Us. For Justice.

As always we'll help you meet people - so no worries if you're new to SoJust,
plus we'll have "I'm Looking For" and "Ask Me About" tags at our Connections
Corner, which is staffed by our amazing STARZ (regular attendees).  We'll also
have our wildly popular Jobs Board and Action Stations to make it even more
likely you'll make the right connections.

Want to cross-promote your events and campaigns? Looking for like-minded
progressives to hang out with in Boston? Are you new to the area and looking for
groups to get involved in? Are you psyched about building strong cross-issue
coalitions? Join us!

Yes, we mean you. Members are all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations,
levels of activism and professions. Some just moved to Boston and others were
born here. We hope you see someone like yourself and meet someone you otherwise
wouldn't have.

Hey Organizers! If you're involved with a group or project and want to spread
the word bring flyers for the free lit table. Action Stations - if you have an
action that can be done in 2 minutes (sign a petition) or within 2 weeks of the
event (attend rally, stuff mass mailing) bring it so SoJusters can get connected
to you and your work. This is not a typical tabling event, there'll be lots of
opportunity to schmooze and network! Email robbie@... for more
information about the Action Stations.

*The venue is open to anyone over 18 (must be 21+ to enter after 7PM) and is
partially physically accessible - elevator is at the back of the venue and
bathrooms are big enough for manual, but not motor-powered, wheelchairs. Lir is
across from the Hynes Convention Center. Parking near Lir is really hard - you
could get lucky or you could drive around for 30 or more minutes. There are
parking garages by Back Bay station. Best bet is to take the T to Back Bay or
Hynes Convention Center (which is the closest T stop).

Nonprofit originations are invited to apply for a capstone student team to
provide support for a new initiative or capacity building project .

The Capstone project of the Organizational Leadership Masters is an action
learning experience, providing students with an experiential learning
opportunity while performing a service for a local nonprofit or higher education
organization. Over one academic year students work in teams to address a
challenge or opportunity identified by a participating organization.

The Capstone project brings together teams of 3-4 graduate students to address
challenges and/or identify new opportunities as identified by the applicant
organization. In conjunction with this organization, the Capstone team will
develop a work plan that will produce a carefully scoped final project that
addresses the need as defined by the organization. Each team will produce a
written report and make a final presentation of its findings and
recommendations.

Qualifying for a Capstone Team:

Any nonprofit organization or institution of higher education is eligible to
apply for a Capstone team. In order to be considered for a team an application
must be completed and submitted by the deadline of June 30, 2012.

The Capstone Project:

An acceptable Capstone project is one that is important but not urgent and is
achievable within the timeframe of one academic year and supported by the
resources available. The proposed project identifies specific deliverables for
the team to provide and there is a clear definition of the issue to be
addressed. Projects that are not acceptable are those that ask for interns,
administrative support or organizations that do not have the resources to
appropriately support the work of the Capstone team. Examples of acceptable
projects include (but are not limited to): strategic planning, studies of best
practices, needs assessments, program planning, board and leadership development
or program evaluation.

Subject: 2 VISTA Positions Available at UTEC
kschlegel@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi MBM Friends!

UTEC (United Teen Equality Center) has 2 VISTA positions available starting July
2012 and running through July 2013. One VISTA will work in Development and the
other in Evaluation and Learning. Below is a quick intro to UTEC and the 2 job
descriptions with links to the full position postings.

Please feel free to forward this information to anyone who might be interested!

Thank you!

About UTEC:

The United Teen Equality Center (UTEC) was founded in 1999 in Lowell, MA, as the
result of an organizing movement by young people to develop their own teen
center in response to gang violence. Today UTEC is a nationally recognized as a
model youth development agency, and our mission and promise is to ignite and
nurture the ambition of Lowell's most disconnected youth to trade violence and
poverty for social and economic success. UTEC's target population is 16-24 year
olds who have dropped out of school and are gang-involved, criminally-involved,
homeless, and/or parents. Through its holistic model, which includes intensive
case management, workforce, education, enrichment and youth organizing programs,
UTEC encourages and develops the skills, talents, and interests of youth and
assists them in reaching major milestones.

About the Development VISTA Position:
http://www.utec-lowell.org/uploads/uploads/americorps_vista_resource_development\
_final.pdf

UTEC receives funding from a variety of sources. Historically, most of this
funding has come from grants, contracts, and foundations. A small percentage of
our funds currently come from individuals and smaller private sources. It is
our goal to solidify and increase our presence with individual donors. While
UTEC serves a local population, our model is nationally recognized and resonates
with individual constituents outside of Lowell City limits. With the opening of
our LEED Platinum certified green building in the fall, we will have additional
resources to engage new supporters. The VISTA position is designed to help with
all of these goals and objectives by working with the Development team. More
info here:
http://www.utec-lowell.org/uploads/uploads/americorps_vista_resource_development\
_final.pdf

About the Evaluation Assistant VISTA Position:
http://www.utec-lowell.org/uploads/uploads/americorps_vista_evaluation_assistant\
_final.pdf

UTEC is a data- and outcomes-driven organization always seeking to expand its
capacity to use data for reflective practice and program refinement. UTEC's
evaluation work consists of three major areas: internal documentation and
reporting using Efforts to Outcomes (ETO), a web-based database for UTEC staff
to record their work; external partnerships with evaluators; and primary and
secondary research on youth development practices. We are looking for a
critical and systems thinker who can assist in all three areas. More info here:

with ideas and awareness and generate discussion. It's a fun way to get
your point across without the pressure of talking for an hour.

Boston 501 Tech Club is looking for presenters for our June 11th evening
event. Here's your chance to give a 5-minute presentation on any topic
or idea related to nonprofit technology in a fun and supportive
environment. To participate in ignite: http://bit.ly/Boston501Ignite

Very affordable training! Only $50 per person. Interactive methods can be
ignored or marginalized as "ice breakers" to be used only in the first few
moments of a meeting, or the first few hours or days of a group's experience.
When used consistently and strategically - with purpose in mind, and connected
to the work of the group - they turn into something more powerful. In this
training, participants will explore the depth and richness of several
interactive exercises, and their ability to increase positive participation,
create and maintain relationships, and discuss challenging topics- all while
engaging the hearts, minds, and energies of participants. Learn how seemingly
simple activities can help your team members connect to the goals of your

I'd like to find out who is on the computer science faculty at Roxbury

doesn't seem to list them or provide their contact information.

Can anyone here connect me with folks on the faculty there?

And while I'm at it, can anyone explain the logic behind this phenomenon: <

  Dear YNPN,

Do you know of anyone with tech skills who is interested in working with
nonprofits? Third Sector New England, in partnership with the Massachusetts
Nonprofit Network and Common Impact, has several HandsOn Tech Americorps
VISTA positions open. Be sure to submit your application as soon as
possible, because we will begin reviewing applications next week.

*Position Summary*: Third Sector New England (TSNE) provides management and
leadership resources to help nonprofits support healthy, just communities.
The Consulting Program provides assessment-based, system oriented
capacity-building consulting services. Now, in partnership with Google,
Points Of Light and Americorps we will add a new line of technology
assessment and technical assistance support to our constituents.

The HandsOn Tech program is a unique opportunity to gain first-hand
knowledge and experience developing and implementing programs to meet the
technology needs of small to mid-sized nonprofit organizations in and
around Boston. HandsOn Tech VISTA members recruit and work with volunteers
from Google and other local technology companies to design and deliver in
depth technology assessments and customized trainings. Members and
volunteers will work with 10 to 15 non-profits to increase capacity,
efficiency and organizational outcomes through the adoption of new
technology. Members and volunteers will complete a technology assessment to
identify ways to enhance organizations web presence and use of web-based
applications or other technology. A technology plan will be developed and
implemented based on the needs and priorities of the organization. The
project will also provide training for nonprofit staff, board members and
volunteers to make effective use of the new technology. As a result of your
contribution to the VISTA project: communities will be left a cadre of
trained volunteer leaders who can answer questions about technology and
applications.

in collaboration with Transfluenci, will help prepare new and experienced
interpreters to work in hospitals, health clinics, governmental agencies and
more, following the standards and ethics of the profession. This program will
include: overview of the profession and professional settings, sight
translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting practice, role-playing,
note-taking techniques, readings in the field, exercises for building memory and
concentration, discussion of practices, standards and ethics, vocabulary in the
medical and legal fields, advice on how to find (and keep) a job as an
interpreter. This course is open to all languages, but students must be able to
fully comprehend and communicate in both English and at least one other
language. Because a selective interview is required before acceptance, students
must register at least two (2) weeks in advance. The College will issue a
certificate upon satisfactory completion of this course, and participants
receiving a certificate will be given the opportunity to interview with
Transfluenci for potential employment as interpreters. This program meets
requirements of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) for
national certification. Prior to acceptance into the course, the student must
take a brief language proficiency test. The cost of the test is $50.

Knowing the sometimes painful outcome of these reactions, it can be hard to
believe they all have purpose and play an important role in daily life. Become
aware of how to: discover the four basic fears; identify the issue hidden behind
the fear; learn how to experience fear rather than react; understand the
message; live the lesson, not the issue.

SLF-333 $20

Making and keeping promises to yourself leads to trust in all your choices.
Compromising yourself puts you at great risk. Today, there is pressure not to
put yourself first, not to keep the promises you’ve made to yourself. This
often causes you to put others’ needs before your own. In doing so, you may
treat others better than yourself, or, worse, you may begin to lose your sense
of self as you compromise your integrity. Your integrity and personal code of
honor come from trust in yourself. The stronger you trust in yourself, the
easier it is to make the choices that lead to well-being. Become aware of how
to: identify all your lifetime promises; understand their role in your daily
life; differentiate between promises and rules; re-prioritize, adjust and learn
to eliminate your promises; discover that your promises affect your whole being.

Music has been accompanying movies since the beginning of cinema. Yet, the
complex art of film scoring remains to be discovered by a broader public.
Keeping the Score will introduce its audience to the history of motion picture
accompaniment and demonstrate the most renowned film scores by Hollywood
composers. Through class discussion and multiple screenings, we will get
acquainted with Max Steiner’s King Kong (1933), David Raksin’s Laura (1944),
Bernard Herrmann’s Psycho (1960) and other famous classical scores. We will
also learn about contemporary film composers and examine works by John Williams
(Jaws, Memoirs of a Geisha), Danny Elfman (Batman, Mission: Impossible), Howard
Shore (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy; Hugo), Michael Giacchino (Ratatouille, TV
series Lost). Delving into the world of contemporary soundtrack, we will
question the controversy with the recent Oscar winner The Artist (2011) and its
director’s use of the section from Bernard Herrmann’s Vertigo. By comparing
the old masters with the film music world of today, we will look at the multiple
roles and functions of music and its indispensable contribution to the cinematic
narrative.

Women Film Directors in Hollywood
SLF-425 $125

In this class, we will enjoy the most intriguing films scripted and directed by
women filmmakers. Our discussions will aim at solving the puzzle: what makes a
woman’s picture different. By analyzing multiple films, we will address the
key elements of style, background and historical circumstances behind the major
productions, and the recurrent themes in women’s cinema. Our main body of
screenings will focus on the significant Hollywood directors, including such
pioneers as Dorothy Arzner (Christopher Strong, 1933; Craig’s Wife, 1936), Ida
Lupino (Not Wanted, 1949; The Bigamist, 1953) and the names which became popular
with critics and audiences after the fall of the studio system (Penny Marshall,
Barbara Streisand, Susan Seidelman and Sofia Coppola). We will contrast the
works of mainstream women in cinema with independent efforts by Barbara Loden
and poetic films by Maya Deren, author of the avant-garde classic, Meshes of
the Afternoon (1943). Through screenings and comparative analysis, we will learn
about the defining elements behind the big-budget production, executed in a
framework of a major studio, versus the work of art produced independently.

As nonprofit budgets continue to tighten, it's more important than ever to make
the most efficient use of our communications with each other. Meetings that
drag, go off-topic, or get sidelined by differences cause a lot of frustration
and wasted staff time -- and impact an organization's mission effectiveness.

Join TSNE on June 7 for "Advanced Facilitation," a half-day training with master
facilitator Nancy Jackson. This training will have you learning and practicing
methods that will improve your communication with colleagues and other work
contacts -- from how to listen, how to ask the right questions, and how to get
your staff to participate more productively in your meetings.

Health Care For All is a Boston-based non-profit advocacy and service
organization dedicated to expanding access to quality affordable health care in
Massachusetts. We seek to create a consumer-centered health care system that
provides comprehensive, accessible and culturally-competent care for everyone,
especially the most vulnerable.

For over 25 years, HCFA has been a leader in state health care policy, playing
critical roles in major health reform efforts including the creation of
MassHealth, private insurance patient's rights, and the 2006 Massachusetts
health care reform law, known as Chapter 58. HCFA is now leading a major
campaign for reducing costs in the health care delivery system, and is involved
in implementation of the Affordable Care Act in Massachusetts.

Besides doing advocacy and policy work, we also assist consumers directly
through our HelpLine. HCFA HelpLine has fielded over 180,000 calls since 2006

“Definitely the best training I’ve ever had. Concepts were vital,

participation were compelling.”

Good decisions don’t just happen!

The standard for effective public involvement...

International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) Certificate in Public
Participation

Members of the League of Extraordinary Trainers are among the practice leaders,
developers and founders of the IAP2 and its Spectrum, principles and ethics. We
don’t just teach public involvement — we work this craft every day.

The League of Extraordinary Trainers is composed of eight highly seasoned
practitioners who have designed and presented some of the most powerful and
recognized training in public participation, collaboration, high stakes
communication, and facilitation in the world today. Most importantly, we’ve
been in your shoes and done the work that you do. We’re not lecturers, but
practitioners who have developed doable, pragmatic, and successful solutions to
the problems that you face. There’s almost no situation or condition that one
of us hasn’t managed. Whatever your challenges, whoever your stakeholders, our
trainers have likely faced them and can help you create the strategies and
approaches to achieve project success.

The League of Extraordinary Trainers teaches from principles not tricks. At our
high-caliber trainings, you’ll learn to approach any situation with the
confidence that successful participation is possible and will generate positive
results. The principles that you’ll learn are supported by the opportunity to
practice real skills that you can immediately apply to fit your unique projects
and circumstances.

The Certificate Program provides a broad-based learning experience covering all
of the foundations of civic engagement. Developed by the most experienced and
successful practitioners from around the world, this training provides useful
tools for designing and implementing practical, real world public involvement
programs. The Certificate Program was designed to provide the knowledge, skills,
techniques, and confidence to design and manage the most effective public
involvement programs.

Training doesn’t mean much if it doesn’t change behavior and improve your
projects immediately. When you’re back in the office, you’ll be informed,
enlightened and empowered to do things differently.

Upon completion of all three classes, students earn a Certificate in Public
Participation from IAP2.

“Excellent presentation of material—great level of material with excellent
anecdotes and additional depth when appropriate.”

IAP2 2012 Certificate Program

Planning for Effective Public Participation (2 days)

You’ll learn how to guide your organization in conducting public involvement
and how to plan for the timing, techniques, and resources needed to make citizen
engagement a success.

IAP2 Code of Ethics relates to both practitioners and clients.

The detailed real world examples and practical hands-on exercises will give you
the tools needed to build realistic public consensus among your stakeholders.

Note: Planning for Effective Public Participation is a prerequisite for all
other IAP2 Public Participation Certificate training.

Communication for Effective Public Participation (1 day)

This one-day class will give you the fundamental communication skills
specifically geared to public participation practitioners. You’ll learn the
Principles of Authentic Communication. You’ll focus on specific tools used to
prepare and present information materials effectively in a variety of forums,
small and large group meeting techniques, and facilitation essentials. This
course will give you the skills and confidence to deal with difficult, issues,
meetings and people. This course is valuable for both beginners and seasoned
communicators. It covers the skills that are critical to effective public
involvement and for managing the most difficult, high stakes public situations.
At the end of the day you’ll understand the importance of active listening,
the essentials of risk communication, how to create effective written and verbal
presentations and how to work effectively with news media.

Techniques for Effective Public Participation (2 days)

This class takes you way beyond public meetings. You’ll learn a range of
practical techniques that can be used in a variety of situations to better
communicate with people, build trusting relationships with citizens and get
their help and support with public projects. Techniques that you’ll learn

Groups, and many others that you’ll be able to use immediately in your work.

create effective forums for discussion and dialogue. You’ll learn how to avoid
the many problems encountered in traditional public meetings. You’ll leave

Dear MBM,

Here's some very practical, reassuring advice for nonprofits that are
struggling to get started with programmatic evaluation.  The author is
Johanna Morariu, director of the Innovation Network.

"Six Pieces of Advice to Demystify Evaluation"

Here's one that I particularly like, as a nonprofit technology
strategist: "You don't have to figure out the whole technology
enchilada from the get go." Johanna is totally right about starting
with your programmatic purpose and scope before you figure out the
technological implications.
