Just a reminder to never give more info than is required by law - check with HSLDA if you have questions about what is required should you receive anything like this in MN.
Wisconsin School Districts Seek Census Information
In Wisconsin local school districts are required to conduct a census. Pursuant to this requirement, two different districts sent Home School Legal Defense Association member families' requests for the names and birth dates of residents under 20 years of age.
Uncomfortable with being contacted by their school district, the families notified HSLDA to discover whether they had to meet the demands of the school districts. Senior Counsel Chris Klicka contacted the schools and, while affirming their need to conduct a census, advised them that families are not obligated to participate. Consequently, the families declined to provide the information sought by their local public school.
If you are in Wisconsin and receive a census notice from your local school district, please understand that you are not required to participate and may decline to give the information requested by the school district

Thank you Lyn for the help. So if you have a degree, then you do not
have to do the quartely reports or have a supervising teacher?. If
you do not have a degree, you can either have a supervising teacher
or do the quarterly reports? Do things vary alot according to your
school district?
In Montana you just tell them you are schooling at home and give
them address so they don't send out truancy officers. In Texas, you
do not do ANYTHING. In Iowa, you notify them and have a supervisory
teacher or take "official tests" administered by someone other than
the parents.
Our lives really revolve around home education at this stage of
life. It is really important that we don't get any more intruded
upon than we are now...I am already uncomfortable with my kids
anxiety over taking their "school work" to someone. I want learning
to be fun and not something being shaped by an outside shadow.

As far as where we might relocate, my husband believes it will be
around St. Paul. He has a little say so about it. He will want to
make it somewhere we can live in the country. My boys do alot with
4H. We have poultry and Nubian goats for show and milk.

Thank you again for your help, Bethany in Iowa

Washington Times Op-ed—Charter schools government- controlled

With private and government estimates showing that homeschooling is
growing at a rate of 7 percent to 15 percent each year, most people
recognize homeschooling as the fastest-growing education trend
today.

But can homeschooling maintain this pace? According to a report
released in November 2004 by the U.S. Census Bureau, there are an
estimated 5.5 million "stay-at-home" parents. Homeschooling usually
requires having a full-time parent at home, and even with an
estimated 600,000 families already homeschooling, there still is
significant room for growth.

Depending on how homeschoolers are counted, different conclusions
could be reached about homeschool growth. In recent years, the
increasing numbers of homeschoolers appears to reflect the growth of
public charter schools. There is an important distinction to be made
between children in charter schools and those being educated
privately by their parents. A charter school is still a public
school, which is run by the government.

Homeschool leaders across the country are concerned about the
charter-school movement because many families who previously
homeschooled have been drawn into the charter school, thereby losing
some of their parental authority. If this trend continues, it could
affect the liberty of the private homeschooler who desires to be
independent from government oversight and control.

The charter-school option is tempting. Typically, the government
covers the costs of materials by providing curriculum and a
computer. There are significant drawbacks, however, since the
curriculum is fixed. The genius of independent homeschooling is that
a parent can tailor an education to fit the interests of the child
and consequently proceed at the child's pace. Another important
factor for many homeschool families is the freedom to teach from a
religious perspective.

Parents who previously homeschooled privately may not have
considered all the costs of switching to a charter school. Once a
commitment is made to a charter school, the government holds the
cards. More regulations can be added because you're receiving a
government benefit.

For some parents, fear and trepidation about whether they really
could succeed at homeschooling pushes them toward choosing a charter
school because there is the promise that a public school teacher
will provide support. But support is available in the homeschool
community.

One of the goals of Home School Legal Defense Association is to
encourage families to homeschool. One program developed by Exodus
Mandate, a group that promotes homeschooling, is called
Homeschooling Family-to-Family. Experienced homeschoolers would
encourage and mentor other families who are considering
homeschooling or are just starting to homeschool.

One of the most effective ways of growing the homeschool movement is
for homeschool families to spread the word about what they have
discovered. They should be equipped with facts and figures that
support homeschooling. They should be able to point people
to "getting-started resources" and local support groups.

This is a challenge for all homeschoolers, because if we do not look
for opportunities at our church or at work to make the case for
homeschooling, then too many families will fail to understand that
home-schooling is a viable option. Also, previously homeschooling
families could be enticed back under the public system via ever-
increasing subsidies, without existing homeschool families who are
willing to lend a hand.

There are millions of parents who would benefit from making this
important choice. In order for homeschooling to fulfill its
potential and revolutionize education in this country, homeschooling
parents need to persuade other parents that the benefits of
homeschooling outweigh the burdens. This is one of the most
important challenges facing homeschooling today. I trust that the
homeschool movement will choose to go the extra mile and ensure that
homeschooling continues to thrive.

We also worked hard with doctors and got them on meds finally to help them!  They have tourettes and all the other things that goes with that........I call it TS PLUS a load of crap!!!!

I say do fun activities like scouting, 4h, martial arts, Art, swimming, sports if that works for your child..........

I am truly thinking that straight homeschooling with their interest is even the best for these kids as some days they want to read encyclopedias and do so many other learning things and sticking to the school regimen is sooo annoying to him at times.  He is much more able to just learn on his own and following the computer and books and all the loads of work gets overwhelming but it is awesome knowledge!  I think MNVA is way ahead regular school for education wise!

good luck.

I have 4 kids with special needs if that helps you at all.....

I have only been with that site for a few weeks, so I have no idea what you are writing about.  But I do have questions about homeschooling my son.  I signed him on with Minnesota Virtual Academy.  Caleb,my son, is nine years old, in third grade, and is having such a difficult time in school.  He had been diagnosed with ADD w/ Hyperactivity, ODD, LD, and Depression.  I know that I was all those things when I was his age.  I remember what the teachers would say at P/T conferences, "If Nena would just apply herself, she would do great at school."  If my parents would have just pulled me out I would have been happier.  I was bored by the teachers and then picked on by the classmates, now Caleb is going through the same things.  What is a typical home school day like?

Hear from you soon

Hello,

I've been a member of this group for awhile and check in occasionally
to see if there's any activity. I don't really understand why there
apparently are 2000+ messages in the archive but only two are
displayed and accessible. Is this site operational? I'm confused.

Given the growing number of homeschooling families, it seems this
would be a useful, active board. I'm hoping to exchange some
information and ideas here in the near future.

Hi Dee Dee,

I have to say, I am concerned. Is there a reason you made a list
listed in the MHA handbook as a homeschooling resource unavailable
for archive searching?

Your moderators message says that only posts spamming etc would be
blocked/removed.

As a member of this group I would really like to know what your
thinking is the goal/future of this group.

Do you indeed tend to harshly moderate it or is it an open group
that is moderated only as necessary?

Are you going to control message topic and posting or allow
membership interaction.

I'm sorry, but your actions are not only extremely restrictive, but
they are also infringing on the rights of the members of this group.

So it is VERY important that you are honest and forthright with your
stance as moderator, that includes who you are, what your vision of
this group's future is and what your rules for posting to the list
are.

Please respond on list so all members can be clear on what this
group will allow and who is allowed to post and be a member and who
is actually moderating this group.

Honesty, along with a commandment, is also encompassed in many of
this countries laws.....please give an honest reply.

Thanks so much, it will really help all who wish to participate!

Take Care,
Chantel
