Wow Doug, what a clear and concise statement of truth. Many of us who have observed or participated in paragliding have long concluded that the risk is completely unacceptable. It is horrific how suddenly a "wing" can ball-up and plunge one into free-fall. It is very sad how the pernicious mantra of "paraglider safety" continues to be visited on thousands of innocents each year. The 60-year reign of the deadly Benson Gyrocopter - safest aircraft in the world - suggests that the myth of paragliding safety will be with us for a very long time. (Note: the much heavier loaded and more conservatively designed powered parachutes appear to have much more resistance to malfunction.)
