We went to Morton Arboreteum in Lisle (DuPage County) to see the trees
plus the big bugs sculptures yesterday. While wandering around, I saw
a sign for Morton Cemetery. Didn't actually find it, but found this
link when I got home: http://www.mortonarb.org/main.taf?p=0,2,6

Might be worth cataloging.

River Grove grave of his daughter Brooke, who was killed two years
ago at age 19 by a drunken driver.

One day in late January, when he and his wife arrived at Elmwood
Cemetery, the brass vase adorning Brooke's grave site was gone,
bringing his wife to wrenching tears.

"In that vase were flowers left by her friends and her classmates
with notes attached," Arnold said. "They even took those. I can
replace the vase. Those notes and the flowers can never be replaced."

The Arnolds were among nearly 1,500 area families affected by thefts
allegedly committed by three men who stole red brass vases, World War
II plaques, religious statues and headstones from nine Cook County
cemeteries during a six-month period, Sheriff Tom Dart said Friday.

They sold the brass, worth more than $500,000 in total, to feed their
heroin addictions, Dart said. Those men, who met each other buying
heroin, are in custody and charged with theft, he added.

John Isaacson, general manager at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park,
said thefts of expensive ornaments have gone up as metal prices have
increased. "At first, we were replacing the bronze vases until it was
getting into the tens of thousands of dollars," Isaacson said. "Now,
we no longer put the bronze vases out unless families sign a release
that they won't hold us responsible if it's stolen. We're replacing
them with plastic vases."

Dart said the person to whom the alleged thieves sold the brass "just
didn't care," and the six-month probe, Operation Red Brass,
continues. "I've been in this office for about a year and a half now,
and there's not a lot that surprises me anymore. But the level of
depravity involved in this case is astounding."

David Gurneau, 22, of Bensenville and Alexander Soliveras, 27, of
Chicago were charged with theft of more than $10,000 and theft of
more than $300—both felonies—sheriff's police said. Eric Huffman, 26,
formerly of Glenview, was charged with theft of more than $300. He is
serving a 2-year prison term for possession of a controlled substance.

Dart said the men were caught because police received leads "and they
pointed to some of these folks, and then they would rat each other
out, and it kept going."

The thefts are believed to have occurred between September and
February. At Evergreen Cemetery in Evergreen Park, 1,110 brass vases
were stolen and sold for scrap, police said. They said each 10-inch
vase was valued at $400, but the theft ring received only $10 to $12
per vase.

Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, West Lawn Cemetery in an
unincorporated area near Norridge, St. Joseph Cemetery in River
Grove, Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie and Irving Park and Mt. Olive
Cemeteries in Chicago were targeted.

(I don't agree with the "gloomy" bit... BNC is a beautiful place).

Spot for fans whose team hasn't won in an eternity

By DON BABWIN | Associated Press Writer
      5:05 PM CDT, July 11, 2008

CHICAGO - Finally, the perfect answer for a team that has been
killing its fans for 100 years: A place to put their remains.

A Chicago man and Bohemian National Cemetery on the city's North
Side are joining forces to build for Cubs fans a final resting place
that looks a lot like the spot where they saw their dreams of a
pennant die year after year.

Called "Beyond the Vines," the 24-foot long ivy-covered wall is
designed to look like the one in dead center at Wrigley Field.

It's all on the drawing board now, but the wall is expected to be
up and ready to accept fans in October -- just about the time Cubs
fans are starting their annual mantra of "Wait till next year."

And when it does go up, Dennis Mascari the president of Fans Forever,
Inc., says it will transform the cemetery experience, if not for
the dead, at least for the living.

"When you come to a cemetery to visit a loved one it's usually a
pretty sad, gloomy situation," he said, standing on the lawn where
the wall will be erected. "But when you come here and visit (what
looks like) his home away from home ... Wrigley Field, it's going
to be a great feeling for people."

Mascari, 60, is envisioning something special. There will be a
stained-glass scoreboard. And at each of the 280 niches in the wall
-- "eternal skyboxes, that's what we call them," he says -- there
will be an urn emblazoned with the Cubs logo.

Near each urn will be a bronze baseball card with a photograph of
the deceased fan who, Mascari said, depending on the wishes of the
family can be dressed up in a Cubs hat, Cubs jersey or full Cubs
uniform. It could also include the dead fan's 'statistics' such as
date of birth, date of death, and maybe their favorite Cubs game
and favorite Cub.

There's even talk of piping in Cubs games on speakers so nobody,
living or dead, will miss an inning. Not only that, but if this
idea appeals to more than 280 Cubs fans, the cemetery has set aside
enough land to add a right-field wall and a left-field wall.

The price tag for interment will cost as much as $5,000, the "grand
slam" package that includes pick up of the body and delivery to
Bohemian for cremation in its brand new $100,000 cremation oven, a
service, and, of course, the baseball card plaque and urn.

But Mascari knows there are plenty of fans who have long since died
and their remains are just sitting in urns somewhere, waiting for
their own Field of Dreams. Interment of those ashes can cost as
little as $1,200.

If this sounds, well, crazy, urns with the logo of the Cubs and
other sports teams are already on the market and the maker of those
urns -- Eternal Image -- says last year that Cubs urns accounted
for 10 percent of their Major League urn sales.

And nobody who saw survivors of dead Cubs fans bring photographs
to the 2003 playoffs will forget the sight of them trudging home,
pictures under their arms, after the Cubs once again failed to reach
the World Series.

Besides, Cubs fans have for years been scattering ashes of loved
ones at Wrigley Field -- a tradition immortalized by the late
singer-songwriter Steve Goodman, in whose "A Dying Cub Fan's Last
Request" an old man asks his own family to do just that at the
"ivy-covered burial ground." Those ashes include some of Goodman's,
scattered there by family and friends a year after his death.

That tradition reminds Mascari that his wall can offer something
to fans they can't possibly get from having their ashes scattered
on the outfield grass: Peace of mind.

"Last year the turf (at Wrigley) was removed," Mascari explained.
"So something like this would make sure that fans would never have
to worry about any turf being removed and put somewhere else."

Over at Wrigley, the Cubs aren't saying much. Team spokesman Peter
Chase said in an e-mail that nobody connected with the team had
heard of the wall or wanted to talk about it.

A longtime Cubs fan himself, Mascari hopes the team likes the idea,
if for no other reason it might prompt fans to head to his wall and
not Wrigley with dead fans' ashes.

But since there won't be a Cubs logo on the wall and the company
that makes the urns is already licensed to do so by Major League
Baseball, he doesn't think the Cubs can stop the wall if they wanted
to.

One man who is talking about it is Philip Roux, the superintendent
at the cemetery.

"I think this is great, the best publicity a cemetery could have,"
said Roux.

For one thing, he said it would remind people that the cemetery
perhaps best known for being the final resting place for Anton
Cermak, the Chicago mayor who was assassinated by a man aiming for
President Franklin D. Roosevelt, is still open.

"We have space available," Roux said.

The big test will, of course, be convincing Cubs fans their remains
belong in the friendly confines of Bohemian National Cemetery.

Out at Wrigley, where the Cubs were playing this week, fans' opinions
varied. Some said they hated the idea. Others said they liked it
but wouldn't want their remains to be alone and they just couldn't
imagine their family members joining them.

Steve Kopetsky, a 53-year-old fan who lives in Corte Madera, Calif.,
said he didn't have a problem with spending the money to reserve a
spot on the wall as much as he did if word got out that he'd done
so.

"My wife would kill me," he said.

But Don Rood, a 31-year-old Chicagoan who wore his "Die-Hard Cub
Fan" shirt to the game, said it makes perfect sense.

"What else are you going to do, lay in a box next to loved ones?"
he asked. "It would symbolize what your passion is, what you enjoyed
about your life."

I had a wonderful time last weekend, but I didn't make it as far north as
Madison. I
was photographing my friends' wedding in a semi-official capacity, and they kept
me
plenty busy before and after.

I explored a total of 13 graveyards on the way there and back; these included
the
graves of an United States Senator who committed suicide while in the Senate (he
wasn't happy about losing reelection), and of the renowned social worker Jane
Addams.
Both of these were in the Rockford area. The other sites I visited were random
finds.

Hello, everyone

If you've visited TheCemeteryClub.com since last week, you've seen some of the
damage that was done to one of the oldest (1855) and most beautiful cemeteries
in the area due to a terrible storm (winds up to 90+ mph). But here's a way you
can help with just a click of your mouse. Please read the details below and vote
for Chippiannock!

HELP CHIPPIANNOCK CEMETERY WIN NEW TREES!
Chippiannock Cemetery located in Rock Island, Illinois, suffered greatly from
the destructive storm on July 21. At least 125 trees were destroyed, and the
damage is estimated at about nearly $100,000, which is the cemetery's budget for
an entire year.

But YOU can help! And with just a click! Local TV station WQAD and Modern
Woodmen have teamed up to donate 125 full-size trees to a local, non-residential
location. We, at TheCemeteryClub.com, encourage you to vote for Chippiannock
Cemetery (please note that there is also a listing for Rock Island Cemetery, but
Chippiannock Cemetery is the one to vote for). Click the link below and vote
before the Friday, Aug. 1, deadline!

http://www.wqad.com/global/Story.asp?s=8736949

Established in 1855, Chippiannock has long been considered a Quad Cities
Landmark and is the resting place of over 25,000 persons, including some of the
Quad Cities most memorable individuals.

We at TheCemeteryClub.com encourage fellow taphophiles to make a donation to
assist this cemetery. As we all know, cemeteries do not have a lot of funds.
Chippiannock will need to purchase new equipment to remove these trees. To learn
how you can donate, please visit the link below. Even just a couple dollars
will help.

Chippiannock got 42% of the votes in the poll! Thank you to everyone who voted
for the
cemetery to get the replacement trees after the big storm took out nearly 150 of
them on
July 21. Chippiannock Cemetery will receive 75 trees this fall because of you!

The superintendent Greg Vogele also sent this press release out calling for
volunteers for a
clean-up day:

Volunteers needed for cemetery clean up.

The July 21st storm ripped through historic Chippiannock Cemetery uprooting and
snapping off trees, some of which predated the cemetery opening in 1855. Downed
trees,
branches and limbs cover many gravesites. The clean up and restoration effort
will take
months of work to complete.
In order to allow the cemetery staff to resume mowing the cemetery, individuals
or
community and church groups are asked to assist with efforts to clear the
smaller sized
debris from the cemetery.

Saturday August 9th beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing to 2:30 p.m., we are
asking for
volunteers to pick up branches and limbs lying on the gravesites and stack them
along the
roadways. Volunteers are required to check in at the cemetery entrance at 12th
Street and
29th Avenue and sign a release from liability before beginning to help. Youths
age 12 and
older may volunteer if accompanied by a responsible adult or relative. Bring
your gloves
but leave your chainsaws at home.

If organizations would like to schedule an alternate volunteer day, please
contact the
cemetery office.

Call the cemetery office at 309-788-6622 if you have any questions or would like
additional information.

I'm midway through a Southern Illinois graveyard expedition, writing this
from a dialup connection at my parents' house near St. Louis.

Since saturday, I've explored fifty-four graveyards in the area
between Springfield and Kaskaskia. Mostly, I've been using the list
of governors and senators, and seeking out their graves - all of which
have been easy to find on this trip.

Carrollton city cemetery was one of the most interesting, with a
governor, a Speaker of the House, and lots of beautiful old monuments,
including two lions on a raised platform.

One governor's grave, though, was a major disappointment.

The obelisk of Shadrach Bond, first governor of Illinois, was toppled
by Hurricane Ike just last week. The pedestal stands, but the shaft
is gone.

One of the groundskeepers told me they're planning to replaceit - he
didn't say whether the original shaft would be erected again, or a
replacement made; nor did he know when this would happen.

The town of Chester seems to be very proud of their governor, though,
so I have hopes that they'll repair the monument.

Your best bet is to obtain their death certificates from the State of Illinois.
They are both indexed:

SPEARIN       C          FRANK         M/W  UNK  6032809 1934-11-18 COOK        CHICAGO             34-11-19

SPEARIN       JANE       POLSON        F/W  Y-72 0029092 1950-07-02 KANKAKEE                        50-07-02

The place of burial is specified on the IL death certificate, #17.

You can get copies of these through this website:

As part of a project for a small cemetery in Missouri where Daniel
Boone is/was buried and neighboring farmland, I am looking into slave
history including slave cemetery research (since early owners of the
property were slave owners -- perhaps a slave cemetery is also
somewhere on the property).

Presently, the topic is fairly broad, to be narrowed as I get a better
feel of what is needed for this project.

Does anyone know any good resources to begin with on slave history /
slave cemeteries with an emphasis on the Midwest (Missouri, Arkansas,
Illinois, Tennessee region).

[I always enjoy working on LITTLE projects]

Anyway, any guidance would be appreciated.

Fellow researchers;
It was called to my attention by a very nice woman who lives in
Elmore and whom I met through my daughter's & mine sheep
escapades., took us over Sunday afternoon to a cemetery which I
believe to be the destroyed or who the Knox Co Genealogical Society
in the early years--- meaning the 1970's ---called the Greep ~
Anderson Cemetery. Although all the stones we found in this cemetery
belong to just one family and there may have been more as there was a
deed to this cemetery. But a farmer is driving over it with his big
machinery & time is of an essence to put a stop to this on account of
he is destroying what little bit of dignity I feel these people have
left. Laurie was very upset and said she has watched it be plowed
down and run over and didn't know what to do until she met me. Then
she couldn't find the cemetery and then she did, and took me to it.
The only name of people buried there we found are Armstrong and
seems to be the family of a William Armstrong with several wives, two
at least by the names of Lucy A. & Lydia. There is also a son who
died at the young age of 18 years in the civil war he is not buried
there but a stone is placed in this family plot  to remember him by;
which now you couldn't tell that. Why anyone who knew about this &
would let this continue is beyond me. ~~Shame Shame~~ The bean s are
going to have to be picked here very soon and I would like to be able
to have him go around the stones for now so they are not completely
destroyed. Please help me and the ones who are buried there if you
have any information or might be descended from any of them please
email me. Thanks.
You can find the photos I took on Sunday and then again when I
returned yesterday on my Knox Site
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/il/county/knox/index.html
Click on above link then go to cemeteries then down to Truro twp.,
and Greep ~ Anderson Cemetery. I made two pages out of the photos I
took and if you have a slow internet connection it takes about 8
minutes to download the second page. The link to it is at the bottom
of the first page. The first page might take up to 5 minutes on a
slow internet connection. But please help. Why anyone would not do
anything if they knew the conditions and what is happening here is
beyond me. I'm working on this as fast as I can to see what I can do.
Other Farmers have been sued for this kind of treatment of and old
cemetery even in an abandoned state. I know of several this has
happened to. Thanks for your time & in reading this. I hope to hear
from somebody out there.

You can also see the cemetery by going to my Illinois saving Graves
web site
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/il/state2/index.htm

and clicking on endangered cemeteries and then down to the Armstrong
Cemetery. It is what Laurie called it being's all the stones have the
Armstrong surname on it.

Made my first visit to Bachelor's Grove yesterday (Oct 4th) and snapped
about 90 pictures. I did some comparing to pictures from other
websites and discovered a new stone. I'd be very happy to share this
information if anyone's interested, because I'm curious where it came
from (or maybe it's just a prank, I'm not sure).

Sale of abandoned cemetery could raise the dead

The recent sale of a forgotten cemetery along Route 72 in Dundee Township has prompted some local historians to dig for answers in search of what lies beneath the earth near Dundee Middle School.

What is known from century-old land documents and deeds is that the one-acre parcel at the point where Galvin Road meets Route 72 was a burial site.

What is unclear, however, is whether anyone is still buried there.

There are no gates identifying a cemetery. Headstones and other grave markers have long been removed or buried under the soil. Oak trees and overgrown grass have replaced the open spaces.

Last month, Elgin historians Linda Eder and Jane Smith began compiling stacks of documents related to the property known as the Schroeder Cemetery after a Carpentersville attorney and developer purchased the lot.

"A man called in August and asked if I knew anything about the abandoned cemetery in Dundee Township because a developer was interested in developing it and wants to dig up the bodies," Eder said.

Eder and Smith have found that some of the original owners of the property are Dundee area pioneers whose names are familiar to the area to this day.

A land deed from 1845 lists brothers Marshall and Stanley Sherman, John and William Rankin, William Wanzer and Albro Gilbert as part owners of the burial ground.

Last month, James Kiss, president of Cardunal Investment Group, bought the parcel for $25,500 from Hazel Massey, according to real estate documents. Massey is a descendant of one of the previous owners. Kiss said he has not decided on what to do with the site but would ensure the proper procedures are followed before developing the land.

"If there is one body I would certainly move it to a cemetery where it will be taken care of instead of in the overgrown area that is in now," Kiss said this week. "If there are 50 bodies, we would move them to a proper cemetery. When we have determined if anyone is there, then we will decide what to do."

While some original owners are resting in other local graveyards, including the Dundee Township cemeteries, Eder said others are unaccounted for. Gilbert, the man the Village of Gilberts is named after, is believed to be buried in the Schroeder Cemetery.

"Albro Gilbert lived two farms away from the cemetery," Eder said. "I can't believe they would take him somewhere else when he lived that close."

Some members of the Thompson family who owned three plots in the cemetery as well as the land that Dundee Middle School was built on, are also unaccounted for, Eder said.

"These people were the early Kane County pioneers. These people opened up this area," Eder said. "They struggled to start this area and I think it is disrespectful to dig them up. There should be some recognition that they worked hard to start the area."

The Sterling stone is located to the left of the Fulton stone...I

Yes, it certainly looks like that monument was recently repaired.

In 1996 it was just the base, and it looked like the vertical part was snapped
off:
http://www.graveyards.com/IL/Cook/bachelors/fulton.html

Here's a 2004 close-up of it:
(I think this is the same monument, because it's close to Fulton, and from the
position
of the small tree next to it)
http://www.graveyards.com/IL/Cook/bachelors/2004-base.html

and now, as you've shown, it's restored:

Dear friends,

*Sigh*

I suppose it had to happen eventually--the prices of printing Epitaphs Magazine
have
gone up. This, of course, means that the cost of the magazine to you has also
gone up.
I'm not happy about this, but am considering ways to bring the costs down
without
lowering the integrity of the magazine.

The price of the full-color magazine at 28 pages is now $15.98 plus $5.90
shipping/handling. And the $5.90 is the media mail rate (which is another jack
in prices).
This shocked me when I discovered it today while placing orders for customers. I
actually
had to pay out money to cover the increase in costs to send the magazine out to
someone!
It's not like EM is a big money-maker anyway, but that's ridiculous.

What I would like now are your opinions. How can I save this magazine from
disappearing?

An easy way to cut costs is to go back to a black-and-white format. The cover
would still
be in color, but the insides would not be any longer.

If color is an issue, then perhaps cutting back on pages is the answer.

I can look into another online publisher as well. If anyone has any suggestions,
I'm open to
them. The stipulation is that it must be a print-on-demand publisher like
Lulu.com (who
I'm using now). I cannot afford to the issues in bulk like I did with the first
four issues.

I want to hear from you, the readers and supporters of EM, before I make a
decision. Until
then, know that I am doing what I can to continue making EM the best magazine it
can be.

Sincerely,
Minda
