Good question!

After all my children graduate, and when all the school books have been passed down to the grandchildren, and when I no longer have a perpetual pile of shavings under the pencil sharpener, I will hope that I've prepared our children with a well-rounded education:  an in-depth understanding of the scope of God's Word, good reading and communication skills, practical math and problem-solving abilities, and an appreciation for the beauty and order of various arts and sciences.  However, in addition to these "basics", we would not consider their education complete without equipping them with certain "tools", some of which include:

#1)  The love of the truth:  a longing to know God, to understand His ways, and to carry out His commandments.  (2 Thess 2:10)

We present Jesus to our children as the One who was the Truth, lived the truth, and always spoke the truth, even when He knew it wasn't going to be well-received.  Following in His steps, the Apostles also refused to water down their message when commanded to do so.  And who was offended by the truth?  The Pharisees!  They had mastered the art of straining out a gnat while swallowing a camel.

#2)  Confidence:  The ability to face whatever tasks the Lord would call them to accomplish, without the debilitating fear of man.  (2 Tim 1:12)

Jesus wasn't intimated at all by those who pretended to speak on God's behalf, but didn't truly comprehend or represent the heart of God – nor should we be.  Sometimes He answered their folly as their folly deserved, and sometimes He simply ignored them.  But He never compromised, no matter what kind of pressure was applied, be it public or private.

#3)  Discernment:  The ability to know the difference between the truth and man's opinions.

We teach our children that discernment is not applying man's wisdom to God's Word, but rather it is applying God's Word to a situation.  Discernment cannot be “Always say positive things” when Jesus Himself called the Pharisees vipers, fools, blind guides, and hypocrites.  Jesus also referred to Herod as a fox – not a complimentary term!  We know our children are walking in discernment when they make righteous judgements based on God’s Word, rather than on the opinions, traditions, or feelings of man.

God bless you all,  Lori

Pray for Obama.  (Psalm 109:8)

have for them. All the items do not have to be new, I am just asking you to
please make sure its in good working order and clean. Gift certificates are also
nice if you are going to buy new. This can save on shipping costs. So please look
around to see what you have to give. Lets put some smiles on some faces this
Christmas. So please help with adopting a family, or just send a gift to a
child. Any help you give would be greatly appreciated. If you can help this year

Hi this is Shawn Cliare son. Thank you for all your input. It is going to
help me out so much.

Caroline(16 yr old doughter isa behind in so much. I know for a fact I need to
go to get her tested to see where I need to start. I will be getting
guardianship within the next 2 weeks. I do not want to put her Detriot Public
Schools becouse she is bipolar. So I think the best option I have is
homeschooling her.

I have talk to a couple people over the phone. They all told me to take her to
lansing to get her test to see where I stand at as a curriculum stand point.
Also I was told about homeschooling groups too. I prefer to get in group in the
downriver area or Metro Detroit.

Thanks for all your input and if you have any more please feel free to reply
back and contact me.

Hi Everyone!!
We found out a short time ago that 2 of our native friends from Guatemala that
work directly with the orphanages there will be in Michigan from December 3rd
through January 13th. They are now setting up informational meetings with
groups, chruches, organizations, individuals, schools, etc. The purpose of
these meeting is to raise awareness for the orphan situation in Guatemala and
ways we as Americans can help. If you or anyone you know would like to set up a
meeting please let me know.

Also, we have an Orphan Care Mission trip from this area headed to Guatemala Feb
6th through the 13th of 2010. There are still openings if anyone is interested
in joining this team. Cost is $995 and includes all in country transportation,
lodging, food, bottled water, translators, and basic VBS/work supplies. The
cost doesn't include airfare which runs about $350 from Chicago or $500-700 from
Grand Rapids.

In Christ,
Amy

I think the "ah-ha" moment came at the same time and place with all my scholars (8 so far).  It's that  moment when it's not just B says "b" and A says "a".  But its when BA says "baaaaa"...  and then they add the "t", so it now says "baaaaaaa-t".  And THEN the light goes on, and the uncontrollable smiles and giggles tell you all you need to know:  THEY'RE GETTING IT!  For me, that's the major hurdle, and it's an uphill climb until that moment - but from that point on we practically skate through the rest of the learning-to-read process.

Also, what helped my children to "get it" faster (and helped me get through with my sanity in tact - well, almost!) is that I wrote a little "song":

"I like reading,
it is fun,
FA, FE, FI, FO, FU."

"I like reading,
it is fun,
DA, DE, DI, DO, DU."

And we'd sing it for every consonant we learned, accompanied with every short vowel sound - and we'd mix up the order so that I knew they were learning it and not just memorizing the song.

Lori

What is the earliest positive learning experience you can remember with your child/ren? You're first "ah-ha" (they got it; or it worked)

For me, I would have to say reading.  (I think because it was it was an "ah-ha" moment for all of us.) I think the coolest moment that we have had was when my kids started to read, and I sat back and thought, "If we can do this, then we can do it all."  It was "ah-ha" they got it; and "ah-ha" I can do this. That was 10 years ago, and my kids are in the 10th grade now still plugging away!

Rebecca

P.S. I went to the store to buy a pre-made turkey and meal so that I wouldn't have to cook (because this year my kids were begging for a "holiday" meal), but I just couldn't get over the prices!  My husband's income has dropped half this year, and I just couldn't justify the cost.  I ended up buying a turkey to make.  But to keep things simple for myself, I used boxed potatoes, canned cranberry, canned green beans, canned gravy, and boxed stuffing.  All of which took less than 30 minutes to put together when the turkey was near complete.  My kids and husband said it was a great meal!  (I think they were just in the holiday mood.)  Next year, back to hamburgers and hotdogs!  Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

QOTW: What are you doing this year to celebrate Thanksgiving
Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm happy to report that my son's surgery last Monday seems to have gone well.  Last year we spent Thanksgiving going crazy trying to control the pain from knee surgery (football injury) and it was two weeks before he was up and walking.  This Thanksgiving, we are happy that he is not having a lot of post-op pain from his shoulder surgery (football again!); and the discomfort that he is having is rather manageable through pain medication.  We are thankful about this.

So it's that time of year where we try to shift our focus on being thankful for things. This being said...What are you doing this year to celebrate Thanksgiving (regardless to what you believe in or celebrate).

(I never think to include my own answers to the QOTW in the email that I send out.  Here's the difficulty that I run into.  I send the QOTW out to almost 200 groups.  I then receive almost 200 responses back, as I have my groups set to individual mail.  Once I send out the QOTW, my internet provider shuts me down for sending out emails for a 24 hour period--I can only send out emails directly through each Yahoo! group....which would take me forever to do one by one.  By the next day, I am busy approving messages/members and forget to send in my own responses.  But today, I remember to include it in the original email!)

For us, the holidays are a no fuss.  My husband works a lot so that I can stay home with the kids...usually six days a week (sometimes seven).  When holidays would approach, and he would have a day to spend with us, I would be in the kitchen cook.  If I wasn't in the kitchen cooking, I was in there cleaning up.  The day that he would be off, I would really see him only at the meal times.  So several years ago, my husband decided that a holiday was a holiday for all of us.  No cooking or cleaning on that day.  We cook hotdogs and hamburgers the day before and we eat them the next day.  We generally spend the day watching movies or TV shows together, while eating popcorn in between.  Sometimes family will stop by on their way to the homes of others.  Both of our parents (and my maternal grandparents) and siblings live either in our county, or in the next county, so they can be seen quite easily or frequently through out the year. We do not go out on holidays, as my husband drives for a living and hates to travel on his day off; plus he wants to spend the time with us since he doesn't see the kids a lot.  Add to this that we live with my parents (to help take care of them), and my husband it when my parents go to my sister's and we have some "just the four of us" in the house time.

This year, however, my kids have been grumbling that they would like a turkey (a Thanksgiving dinner in general).  My grandfather (90 years old) had a major heart attack a couple of weeks ago and my husband doesn't think he will live for another year; although until this heart attack, my grandfather put me to shame: walked at least 5 miles a day and still did push ups and sit ups!  So my husband would like to go and visit my family at my sister's this year "for only an hour."  He has also said that a Thanksgiving dinner would be okay--just as long as I ordered one and didn't spend the morning cooking it--woo! hoo!  So I guess that is how our Thanksgiving will be this year.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Rebecca Miller

Here is a little about me and why I need help. Well I am 32 years and a father
to son that is 9 years old his name is Nathan and a daughter Brandi that is 8
years old and married to a wonderful woman I have been in the army for the past
six years now. My world got turned upside down when I took my wife to the
doctors on June
29/2009 they gave us the worse news ever that they had found out that day that
she was in heart failure and they found a 1cm lump on her lungs. The doctor did
more tests on her and found out that she was in classic cardiac failure, with
lung problems and they think that something might be wrong with her circulatory
system. I then took her to the heart doctor and confirmed everything and then he
told her that I had abnormal heart beat and that the chest pain that she had was
due to her over doing herself. It was the worse news ever I am now being forced
to get out of the army on the family care plan because I have no one to take
care of her when I deploy or goes to field or ntc. Our world completely changed
that day. I am here asking for help for Christmas because after paying all of
the bills and getting her meds
and getting food I am not going to have any money left to get my kids anything
for Christmas I want my kids to have a good Christmas this year because I know
that my wife will start to feel sicker and not be able to do the things that she
needs to do. Please help my family to have a good Christmas this year thank you
my son is in need of toys, clothes and shoes he is 9 years old and he likes
cars, and legos, and spiderman, he wears a size 8t to 9t and a size 3 shoe in
boys, and my daughter is 8 she is in need of toys and shoes she wears a size 2
in girls and she likes anything that has to deal with moxie girls, dora , hannah

have for them. All the items do not have to be new, I am just asking you to
please make sure its in good working order and clean. Gift certificates are also
nice if you are going to buy new. This can save on shipping costs.
So please look around to see what you have to give. Lets put some smiles on some
faces this
Christmas. So please help with adopting a family, or just send a gift to a
child. Any help you give would be greatly appreciated. If you can help this year

Hi Cheryl,
I typed in homeschool books and it directed my to people giving away their
homeschool books or you type textbooks. You may also go to yahoo groups and do a
search for Used_Homeschooling_Curriculum and you have to click join group, then
wait for them to e-mail you back.
Michigan-Homeschool-Swap is a website for parents to get homeschool material for
free if the other member wants to swap or you can just post a message that you
are looking for a certain grade level and don't have anything to give back to
them. TheHomeschoolMomUsedCurriculum yahoo group offers some cheaply priced
homeschool books if you join their group. www.schoolexpress.com is a website
where you can download free curriculum worksheets and www.smartteaching.org is a
website that lists links to websites that offer homeschool resources some of
them are free curriculum to print. www.wilostar3D.com is an online 3D virtual
website for grades 6-12 and SpellingCity.com is a website you can go to for
spelling words by grade level, sheppardsoftware.com is also another good website
for homeschool resources. If you have any questions you can e-mail me again and
sorry for the delayed response I was busy with my schoolwork. Hope this helps

information on how to get started. You can join if you wish or just browse for

or non-religious which is called secular. Like I said I am new but noticed
nobody elso chimed in who has more experience, so I hope this helps and doesn't
offend anyone. Your son's local library should have your Grand-daughter's grade
level textbooks avaliable and I found homeschooling groups online through yahoo
groups. I bought my son's textbooks from yard sales, library book sales, and
recieved free textbooks from freecycle.com. I also go online and download free
worksheets and supplement his learning on www.harcourtschool.com. I just
recently purchased 5th and 6th grade textbooks for $10 each from a member from
my county's homeschool group. I went online to yahoo groups, typed in
homeschooling groups and it brought me to a page listed with homeschooling
groups listed in different counties. I recently went on Amazon.com and E-bay to
find textbooks to find out they sell some very cheap. I found another website
where you can rent textbooks then return them when finished that website is
www.chegg.com
> Another website to go to is www.rainbowresource.com and order a free catalog
for all their homeschool books and supplies they have for sale. The way I
informed my son's school is with a simple phone call to the school office and
told them that my son won't be returning because I am homeschooling him from now
on. According to Michigan Law I didn't need to inform anybody but I didn't want
our county truancy officer to contact me because of a reported lengthly absence.
I hope this information helps and good luck.

A horse is a vain thing for safety; Neither doth he deliver any by his great power.  Behold, the eye of Jehovah is upon them that fear him, Upon them that hope in his lovingkindness; to deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine.  Our soul hath waited for Jehovah: He is our help and our shield. (Psalms 33:17-20)

There are several different forms of "safety"...  physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, etc.  Although we are anything but careless with the first three, I guess my husband and I are more concerned about the spiritual safety of our children than with any of the others put together.  Just one of the ways in which we endeavor to secure our children's spiritual safety is by teaching them that God's Word is altogether true - whether it's revered or mocked, politically correct or incorrect, socially popular or unpopular, or personally convenient or inconvenient.  God says that His Word is settled in heaven, will never pass away, and will be the yardstick by which every human being that ever lived will be judged - like it or not.  I'm not opposed to higher education, but higher learning is not safety.  I'm not opposed to working hard and becoming prosperous in business, but money is not safety.  I'm not opposed to having earthly possessions, but "things" do not constitute safety.  I'm not opposed to diet and exercise, but physical strength is not safety.  Trusting in the Lord with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength and obeying His Word and the promptings of the Holy Spirit (which will never contradict the Word of God) make up the only formula to real safety in these last and evil days.  The children and I just read from Revelation 6 this morning about the martyrs that John saw underneath the altar in heaven.  They had been "slain because of the Word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained."  And they were safe - safe forever, because they were safely home.  May it be so with all 9 of my children as well.

God bless you all,  Lori

Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord' and do not do what I say?

              Sincerely yours, Jesus  (Luke 6:46)

You can join if you wish or just browse for now. There are many methods of teaching, if your son prefers religious material or non-religious which is called secular. Like I said I am new but noticed nobody elso chimed in who has more experience, so I hope this helps and doesn't offend anyone. Your son's local library should have your Grand-daughter's grade level textbooks avaliable and I found homeschooling groups online through yahoo groups. I bought my son's textbooks from yard sales, library book sales, and recieved free textbooks from freecycle.com. I also go online and download free worksheets and supplement his learning on www.harcourtschool.com. I just recently purchased 5th and 6th grade textbooks for $10 each from a member from my county's homeschool group. I went online to yahoo groups, typed in homeschooling groups and it brought me to a page listed with homeschooling groups listed in different counties. I recently went on Amazon.com and E-bay to find textbooks to find out they sell some very cheap. I found another website where you can rent textbooks then return them when finished that website is www.chegg.com
Another website to go to is www.rainbowresource.com and order a free catalog for all their homeschool books and supplies they have for sale. The way I informed my son's school is with a simple phone call to the school office and told them that my son won't be returning because I am homeschooling him from now on. According to Michigan Law I didn't need to inform anybody but I didn't want our county truancy officer to contact me because of a reported lengthly absence. I hope this information helps and good luck.

What do we need to get this started? Can we apply now even though school has
already begun?

My son is getting guardianship. I just want to be sure that all our "ducks are
in order" before we jump into the pond.

Any advice you can give me regarding Michigan Homeschool laws and how to get
started is greatly appreciated. Also, is there a cost for this? which I assume
there is?

Thanks in advance,

Well said!  I agree, it's important for us to lead.  They really want us to be the leaders for them, the stress becomes removed.

Check into local support groups, teen fun stuff, field trips, service projects, etc.  These will help with the adjustment.  A good site to check is:  www.enrichment-hub.blogspot.com.  There are numerous others to help with your journey.  make sure mom & dad are getting fed into too, as this helps in the adjustment stage of young adulthood.

Hi all~
I have a soon to be 13 year old dd that I want to homeschool for many reasons. She says she doesn't want this, but sometimes she acts like she does. I believe that after an adjustment she would change her mind and love being home.
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks!

I am happy to say that for the first time in about 12 years, I don't need a babysitter anymore, b/c my oldest daughter is 12 and she can take care of the kids when we are gone.  We have 5 kids, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, so there aren't any baby issues.  And we don't often go out at night (I think have done so only 2 times in the last 6 months when she was in charge) and have been going out at lunch-time instead.  The freedom of not having to pay a babysitter is SO NICE!  With 5 kids, we almost never went out, as it would cost so much to pay a babysitter.  That said, we try not to take advantage, and it has only ever been a few hours at a time.  If we needed someone for something big, we would probably get someone older.
