So here on the details. And it was a great hunt.

      Eight cars !

I am going to list the participants by mileage:

      1. At 9.1 corrected miles, "Silo" Bob KD8HNF and Frank KD8OHS.
          They clocked in at 8:43PM

      2. At 10.6 corrected miles, that Incredible team from Muskegon,
including:
Jim KC8PCJ, Dave KD8OCZ, Cathy and Nancy,
Jeff W8SWX along with Brenda and Nathan.
This team was the first to show up at 7:54 PM

      3. At 13.2 miles, Jack K8CYV and Barb KD8FBY, the "other" Muskegon
Team!
They clocked in at 8:44 PM.

      4. At 13.8 miles, Mike W8DER, Jim KD8CAN, and Robert KC8USP
They clocked in at 8:23 PM

      5. At 24.5 miles, 3 of them swimming, James K8JHR and Chuck AJ8W.
They clocked in at 8:43 PM

      6. At 25.8 miles, "Smiling" Hank KA8COB, Sara KD8JOB and Todd KD8OQH.
They clocked in at 8:34 PM

      7. At 33.1 miles, Don KG8UH and Dave N8NBU.
They clocked in at 8:45 PM.

The winners by mileage are KD8HNF and KD8OHS. I looked at the
route they took, and there is no way to go any shorter.

At the same time, as a "veteran" Fox Hunter, we have to tip our
collective hats to this Amazing group of people out of Muskegon. This is
only their second showing, and they took names. The Muskegon group took
in 2nd AND 3rd for mileage, and 1st for time. I think a monster has been
awakened. What is going to happen when they get "good" ! :) I looked at
their map and all their bearings were dead on, including the very first
one. Impressive.

I have to take a moment and make a special note of thanks to one
person. And that is Jim Leys, KD8ACN. Jim is the one who is always
handling the clipboard and taking names and mileage readings at the
start location. I think Jim has done this over 20 times now, and his
work and attitude is so very much appreciated.

I can safely state that this was a very fun hunt. Sheila and I had
a great time (watching the teams coming in, and just waiting !)
Thank you to all the folks involved.

And a note to anyone reading this email who did not participate.
Sheila and I took an unusual step to actually post pictures of the
hiding location before the hunt. You can see these pictures at :
       http://www.michiganbroadcasttowers.com/foxhunt.htm

Now, to dust off our Df'ing equipment

Some crazy guy is selling a brand new, ground independent Hy-Gain AV-640
vertical antenna for real cheap on QRZ.com. Man what a deal ! It
would be a good option for a new ham who wants multiple bands (40, 30,
20, 17, 15, 12, 10, 6 meters) but who does not have room for a big
radial bed. Over $100 off the usual price, and in a unopened box,
never used. He must be out of
his mind.... ;-)

It was a gas. This was only the second hunt held by the SMARS W8DF
club. And they did a great jpb. This was a collabrative hunt, with the
hidden transmitter was really a hidden transmitter. I'm guessing there
were about 6 cars in the hunt, and most cars showed up within 20 minutes
of each other.
There are some pictures on the Michigan Fox Hunter web site at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MichiganFoxHunter/photos/album/0/list

It is apparent that this is a very enthusiastic group, and they
will be having more fun and more fox hunts in the future.
As an added bonus, Sheila and I stopped at a McDonald's on the way out
of town, and by coincidence, ACE DF'ers Larry, WB8R and Arnie, NS8T from
Coldwater stopped in also. We all sat down and had a great time.

Of interest to me was the gentleman who was using a TDOA antenna
system. Very interesting antenna and cleverly built.

Folks, plan on a state wide hunt this time next year, probably just
north of Lansing. Michigan is getting ready.

A special thank you to the SMARS group for the hunt and the
hospitality.

You are correct....it was a great day for a fox hunt. The guys from BC did a
great job and the hunt came off without a hitch. It was a real pleasure to meet

those of you thate were not there today, be sure to put their next hunt on your

It was a great day for a fox hunt here in Muskegon also. A little rain, then a little sun, but so much for the weather. It was still a great day for a fox hunt and work shop. First we had two people build tape measure yagi antennas. Than 15 people for a pot luck lunch with Hamburgers and hotdogs. After a bit to eat we set up a practice transmitter so everyone could test and try there equipment with a transmitter in a known location. After getting a little education in, then the real hunt.

We had five vehicles with 8 operators, the fox Dave (KD8OCZ), hunt controller Jim (KC8PCJ) and Assistant controller Jeff (W8SWX)  to get things started. When it was all over Jim (K8JHR) & Chuck (AJ8W) took first spot with 9.5 miles. Mike (W8DER) & Jim (KD8CAN) took second place with 11.8 miles. Jack (K8CYV) took 3rd 13.1 miles. Jim (KD8DLQ 1st time hunter) 4th with 14.0 miles and shortest time by 38 min. Mark (K8MHZ) & Chuck (W8CCS) took fifth due to some equipment failures. After the hunt we all meet back at the MAARC club house and compared notes (shoot the breeze) and learned from each other. There were some people that just showed up for the lunch and stayed to visit for a while. The best possible score would have been 6.6 miles. If it had not been for the equipment issue I am sure Mark and Chuck would have been a force to be reckoned with Hope to see them hunting again in the near future.

While the hunt was going on the Kids where outside the club house having a good time and the XYLs where inside having a good conversation (laughing at these guys running around with funny antennas) in the club house. It was a good time for everyone.

Till we meet again

How many hunters (i.e. teams) were involved in the BC hunt this past
weekend?

Thanks.

James,

I think there were 5 teams total. The Battle Creek crew is a lot like the Muskegon group. This was only their second club hunt. There are quite a few of them, they are smart, learning, and will taking names real soon.

Grand Rapids, Holland, Muskegon, Allegan, Battle Creek and Coldwater, and those over on that east side of the state. We have makings of a lot of good hunts.

Electrical Theory
A observation from years of creating Smoke

All electrical components and wiring harnesses depend on proper circuit
functioning, which is the transmission of charged ions by retention of the
visible spectral manifestation known as "smoke". Smoke is the thing that
makes electrical circuits work. Don't be fooled by scientists and engineers
talking about excited electrons and the like. Smoke is the key to all things
electrical.

We know this to be true because every time one lets the smoke out of an
electrical circuit, it stops working. This can be verified repeatedly
through empirical testing. For example, if one places a large copper bar
across the terminals of a battery, prodigious quantities of smoke are
liberated and the battery shortly ceases to function. In addition, if one
observes smoke escaping from an electrical component such as a voltage
regulator, it will also be observed that the component no longer functions.
The logic is elementary and inescapable! The function of the wiring harness
is to conduct the smoke from one device to another. When the wiring harness
springs a leak and lets all the smoke out of the system, nothing works right
afterward.

Starter motors were considered unsuitable for motorcycles for some
time largely because they regularly released large quantities of smoke from
the electrical system. Once again, the logic is clear and inescapable.
Sometimes you may miss the component releasing the smoke that makes your
electrical system function correctly, but if you sniff around you can often
find the faulty component by the undeniable and telltale smoke smell.
Sometimes this is a better indicator than standard electrical tests
performed with a volt-ohm meter.

In conclusion, the basic concept of transmission of electrical energy in the
form of smoke provides a clear and logical explanation of the mysteries of
electrical components and why they fail.
