Mikesboat yawl update   Message List

We've had the opportunity to do a bit more sailing of our Mikesboat yawl. In
two outing on Lake Michigan, we have seen a top speed of about 8 knots off the
wind and good windward performance at 5 plus knots. In both cases, the
windspeed was about 15 to 20 with typical chop at 1 to 3'. The boat is very
comfortable and has displayed no bad habits in these conditons. In light air,
we have found a slight lee helm which can be reduced by sail trim. Once the
wind fills in, the lee helm disappears. The mizzen can really add a nice boost
to speed. Yesterday, my crew demonstrated tacking and sailing with only the
mizzen up. Dave

Thanks Gary for the reply. I don't view the lee helm in light air as a major problem either. Many years ago I raced J24s that would do the same thing in...
