Discovery...dimension...value...community. Metal clay gives my art all of this and more. I first started using it to enhance my polymer work, but quickly became enchanted. Being a designer at heart, it increases my options, including easier access to several glamorous metals and gems. Over the years, I've explored a broad variety of media such as painting, photography, and several of the textile arts. The last few years, I've concentrated on polymer, metal clay, and various silversmith skills. I have a degree in Advertising Design from the Univ. of MD, which led to a career as a graphic designer. Each creation, no matter the medium, has increased my knowledge, sense of design, and love of texture, pattern, images, and color. Currently, I'm exploring and teaching two techniques. The photo represents one that involves carving and firing metal clay, then adding polymer for additional color, texture, and dimension. A how-to article detailing it was published in the Sept. '09 "Art Jewelry" magazine. The second technique, "Enamel Illusions" is a new way of adding sparkling color to silver clay. Check out my updated website for a close-up photo at http://www.cindysilas.com/workshops.html. The metal clay community and this forum are fabulous for our sharing of experiments, information, and creative work. I am thrilled to be part of it.
