Thought I would get my notes written up here while they are fresh in
my mind. Patricia and I had very great trip. It all worked out just
fine. I wanted her to have a nice boating experience in the San Juans
so we could plan more of them. In our 35 years or so of marriage I've
managed to scare both of us to near death, and practically drowned
her, and yelled at her a lot. I made myself a promise that I would
make this one good. And it was,a dream made true. Cost a little with
our ferry to Orcas, and our lodge at Northbeach at Bartwood Lodge.
But there is a good ramp and dock there. The owners are very nice and
accomodating. And we could shower everyday, and go to breakfast at
good cafes.
We managed to commute between Orcas and Sucia everyday without
problems. It took about 40' between the islands. One day there waa a
strong se/sw wind against the tide making fairly big chop on our
return from Sucua to Orcas. The Baymaster did well, riding good on
the swell, the wake from power boats, facing the wind, all stayed dry
and stable.
We had a good mix between boating/exploring Sucia and driving/hiking
exploring Orcas. The big boaters docking on the docks at Sucia were
very friendly, helped us a lot, made room for docking Cayuga, were
very interested in the small boats. shared stories of their
experineces and problems, wanted to know about the design and history
of the Baymaster and the Chebacco boats. A great bunch. We didn't
stay there long, but the BBQs were out and it looked like a fun
dockside potluck. They all helped us moor up and and shove off.
We explored most of Sucia by foot and by boat, an amazing place. Many
anchoring places, sandy beaches, lots of mooring bouys. We had no
trouble finding a place. The big boaters were fascinated by our
little boats and in some cases downright envious. There were two who
even knew the designer of the Baymaster.
We took Frank Maybrey aboard on one day and motor cruised the bays
around Sucia, talking to the various boat owners and admiring their
boats and vice versa.
Orcas Island is a very unusual place. Like out of this ordinary
world. The people are extremely friendly, very creative, and
different. Its like another country. Excellant food, lots of arts and
crafts.
More later, it's 12 hour trip from the ferry at Sucia to our home in
Cottage Grove. I'm beat but happy.
