CFP: “Beasts in Art and Artisanry II: Technology and applications of
Animal Materials” a session sponsored by AVISTA (Association Villard de
Honnecourt for Interdisciplinary Study of Medieval Technology, Science
and Art) for the International Medieval Congress, University of Leeds,
7-11 July 2008.

Papers are welcomed that consider the medieval uses of animal materials
in practical applications (excluding food) and artisanry of all types.
The session will look at medieval technologies and applications of:
horn, ivory, antler, and bone; hide, leather and vellum; other animal
products, parts, and substances such as eggshells, feathers, or bezoar
stones. Papers may include but are not limited to: recent
archaeological finds, investigations of methods by and contexts in
which animal materials were obtained, processed and deployed,
discussions of the use of animal materials in particular art forms,
crafts or technological applications. Inclusion of the session in the
congress is contingent upon its approval by the congress organizers.
Papers should be no more than 20 minutes in length. Brief abstracts for
papers, along with contact information and audiovisual support
requirements, should be sent no later than September 6, 2007 to Carol
