I am going try ScaleCoat model railroad paints...I had some orange on hand and
the results were terrific, just orange and a little plasti kote blue and dipped
a scrap stick that had been primed white. The scalecoat orange result was much
better than the plasti kote paints, which the PK blue and yellow especially can
get a little gloppy if you want the color to be dark and don't thin the paint.
And the plasti kote red looks pink on all objects, no matter what. Now every
color behaves differently, so we'll see how scalecoat works in the other colors,
especially looking forward to trying red.

pink on the surfaces of all test guitar bodies and the blue/yellow/black one in
the web folder. It about dissolved and spread across the surface the moment it
hit the surface of the water. Blue, yellow, and green behave better. Black
tends to disperse, but not as badly as the red.

Dear friends of decorated paper,

Have you ever been at a loss about which decorated paper you held in your hands?
If so, "Decorated Paper - A Guide Book" will be of interest for you. Susanne
Krause has published it recently with a team of European experts:

Karli Frigge, paper marbler (counsellor)
Susanne Krause, paper decorator (editor, author)
Henk Porck, conservation scientist at Royal Library Den Haag (author)
Julia Rinck, art historian, specialist for early 20th century papers (author)
Frieder Schmidt, historian/curator at German National Library (author)
Ida Schrijver, lector (lector, author)

The book is written in German, English and Dutch. The approach is visual, and
can guide the individual, through a series of steps, to the identification of
the paper in question. Assisting in identification are over 100 colored photos
covering a wide range of decorated papers and styles. Users can work with it
even if they are not knowledgeable about the actual techniques. The first big
test, which came during the cataloguing of the first part (15000 sheets) of the
collection at the German Museum in Munich, has shown that the guide book can be
employed even in cases when a particular paper is not mentioned, simply by
extending the threads.

Orders from the Americas, Canada and Australia are fulfilled by me, orders from
Europe are fulfilled by Susanne Krause.

Thanks Garrett.... still I think maybe people would like to know a bit more.
Such as how many examples are marbled, what % of the book covers marbling, how
many images, size of the book etc. Is it hand bound by Susanne too....maybe
Susanne can fill in some more info. It looks great!!

The book covers the common techniques, from A as in Agate Paper to T as in Tree
Root Marbled Paper, plus a section on Mixed Media Techniques. Definitions,
remarks and demarcations help with the 'seeing' of what is what and the
understanding of what is something else resp. (e.g.) that something is called
Tree Root Marbled Paper in spite of not being made in marbling process at all.
14 chapters, 114 coloured photos. ca. 15 x 21 cm, 217 pp.

The chapter about marbling has been supervised by Karli, it is in 20
sub-chapters on 51 pages.

Bound, machine sewn.

I hope this helps. If not, ask Garrett or me.

Hi all. I'm marbling for the first time in two years. I'm doing everything like
I've always done -- same paints, same paper, same alum, same procedures. Paints
seem fine. However, on the paper, the colors are weak and faded. I can think of
no reason for this except the alum.

I mixed a new batch of alum (double strength) and now have a host of additional
problems. The alum I'm using is from Colophon but it is several years old. It's
been stored dry in a dry climate. Can it have gone off somehow?

Also, if I need new alum, will grocery-store alum suffice, as I need it now?

Many thanks for any help.

I once used grocery store alum and after mixing it I filtered it through a
coffee filter to take out any additives. It worked fine for me, using acrylic
paints. It was something I had to do immediately, so couldn't wait for delivery
of marbling alum. Worth a try.

Only alum I ever use is "canning" alum / grocery store alum. It's an
inorganic compound. Stored dry, It can't "go bad" If it seems to act
strangely, I'd look to the water, size, or paper as the problem.

Make sure the tank is level. If deeper at one end, the paint swirls more when
the size is deeper. If the size is not old, this could be it.

Miss PKT,

I would love to be in one of  your classes.

My daughter and I took one of your classes this past summer.

She has used the material and paper in her 6th. grade art class.

It was great--I know the compliments does not pay the bills--wish you the best.

Hi All,

Just wanted to let you know that I'll be teaching traditional marbling at
Artiscape in Columbus, Ohio on Friday, April 16th. There are several spaces
available if you or a friend are interested. Also, although The Ultimate
Marbling Handbook is out of print and the remaining copies are very expensive, I
have published the patterning section in color and am selling it for $20.
Details about my classes and the book are on my website www.dianemaurer.com

Best regards,
Diane

Hello!
Welcome to the Marbling list. Whether you are a professional marbler or
someone just getting started with this technique, there is lots to
read--and lots of good connections for you to enjoy. Although there is
no main organizational structure to this list, browse around in the
messages, take a look at the files section. Sometimes there is a flurry
of postings and sometimes it gets quiet. Ask questions and someone is
bound to answer.

Thanks

John Ang

Galen is wonderful! We took a class last year when we were having all kinds
of problems with the marbling. Galen was able to help us through some really
tough times, and he is a fabulous teacher.
