Description

Medieval and Renaissance bookbinding. For amateurs and professionals looking for something a little different. A place to share ideas, techniques, research and references on pre 17th Century bookbinding. Also to arrange meetings and classes. Located in the Kingdom of Lachac (Australia and New Zealand).

About me:

In the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) Kingdom of Lochac I am Mistress Sancha da Sylva OP. I have been in the SCA for 15 years. I started bookbinding in late 2006 and have made 22 books since that time, including four sets of Royal Commonplace Books and two sets of Baronial Commonplace books. Text provided by Mistress Katherine Kerr OP whose website is on the links page.

I started bookbinding in the first place because I wanted to be able to read from a book at medieval and renaissance events and have it not stand out. I wanted to read Ancient Greek at events and I wanted a place to keep my notes at events.

I created this webpage in order to share my enjoyment and discoveries of bookbinding with others. I hope to continue to inspire others to do bookbinding, especially now I have a baby and cannot go to events to teach in person. I now have one place to put my research and photographs.

My goal is to bind Ancient Greek printed text, which will require more typesetting than actual binding. I would love to bind a play set, so that thespians can have period books for their reference and inspire impromptu plays. I would like to bind my husbands period cooking manuscripts. I would like to bind SCA documents like Heralds litanies, so that instead of a covered folder at Royal Court there is a period book to read from.

The journalists clearly don't quite understand, but this is quite cool if any of you haven't seen it already:
