Pleasant River Historical Society

The Pleasant River Historical Society is looking for copies of
pictures of the Town of Addison to compile a picture history. They
are looking for old photographs of homes, families, school classes,
veterans, an activity that you participated in or a business that was
in town.

The town consist of areas known as Indian River area, Basin area,
Eastside area, West side, Ridge area, South Addison area, Cape Split
area and Crowley Island area.

Please tell a little about the photo, label the people if you know
them and date they were taking if possible.
The Society is able to scan the pictures and return them to you if
you aren't able to get a copy made.

The best way to make a copy and the cheapest - go to a UPS Store and
have them color copied even if they are black and white. Put as many
on a sheet of paper, if a lot a 11 X 17 sheet will hold quite a few.

Anyone who has a photograph to lend, please contact Ronie Strout at
Ronie_L@..., or 207-483-4374, or Jeannette Perry at 207-483-
4374, or Cathy Fonda 207-483-4655.

This year 2006 is the 210 anniversary of the Town of Columbia, Maine.

I am putting together a History Book of Pictures of the town. I am
looking for real old pictures taken in the 1800's, early 1900's of
the churches, grange halls, schools, homes, saw mills, shingle mills,
grist mill, blacksmith shop, the Redman Hall, the Vestry, houses that
are no longer here, bridges, even the ship yard at the branch, old
barns, even some family pictures that could show what people looked
like in the early part of the town history. Pictures of students at
the different schools will use even up to 1965 for these when the
last school closed.

I would like pictures of any Columbia folks that graduated from the
local High Schools, Harrington, Columbia Falls, and Addison and from
any colleges.

Pictures of the people who were in the service of all the wars, and
any write up you have of your family member that I could use. On all
of the pictures I would like to add a sentence or two about the
picture, where it was taken, who is in it, and the year if known.

The town includes the sections of the Saco area, Epping area,
Schoodic area, Little River area, the Valley area, Turkey Hill area,
Georgetown area, Web District area and the Four Corner area (Branch
area)and Ridge area. Any and all parts of the town of Columbia will
go into this.

I am also looking for articles telling about the history of any
important events of the town, to go into another history book. A big
job but would like to get something done by late spring if only a
little bit.

I am also collecting any newspaper articles written about the town
and obits of folks from the town. If you have a story about growing
up or visiting in Columbia, Maine, I would enjoy adding them to this
history as well.

For instance I have received some: ancestor pictures of families,
pictures of family collections such as a Tenney chair made in
Columbia, Maine, Abijah W. Tabbutt stencil, picture of the Levi
Leighton book, picture of canning jar collection, post card pictures
of the area, people raking blueberries, picture of a picnic at
Schoodic Lake, pictures of the Ice Storm of 1998, pictures of
homesteads and animals they raised, a hand drawn map of Saco Village
in 1940, the bean factory, the train station and many other
interesting pictures.

Will take information on Columbia Falls as well as it was original
all of Columbia.

The best way to make a copy and the cheapest - go to an UPS Store and
have them color copied even if they are black and white or Staples.
Put as many on a sheet of paper, if a lot an 11 X 17 sheet will hold
quite a few.

You can send copies of photos; if you want them return please make
sure you have your return address on them: Ronie L. Strout, 267 Ridge
Road, Addison, Maine 04606.
My email Ronie_L@... has an underscore line between Ronie and
L; or call me at 207-483-4374.

Clara Pendleton Blanchard, one of the Searsport Pendletons, had six
children in the 19th century - three of them born at sea. John Battick
describes Blanchard's spouse, William H. Blanchard, as "husband, ship
captain - and midwife."

In fact, Blanchard was known for his delivery skills to the point that
other captains, if their wives were about to give birth, hoped that
Blanchard might be in port when the time came.

Amazing. .....

Hello all,

I have copies of the Certificates of Marriage for both of my great great grandfather's marriages from his church.

Michael Malloy married my gg.grandmother Mary Ellen Gahagan on Jan. 8, 1888.  Mary died and Michael remarried. The second bride was Euphemie Louise Dube and that marriage took place on Nov. 21, 1897. Both marriages took place at the Holy Rosary Church in Caribou.

I sent to the City of Caribou to get copies of the marriage licenses.  The city wrote back, sent a copy of the second marriage license but only sent me a photo copy of the marriage intention that was listed in some record book. They also returned the money for that document that they did not locate.

But I have a few questions......

I have a copy of a record I obtained through Family Search which confirms the marriage of Michael and Mary on Jan. 7, 1888. I also have a batch number of M520462. So doesn't that mean that someone documented this marriage somewhere?

Do you think the one day, Jan 7 vs Jan 8 could have made it difficult for the clerk to find the document?

Also, the record from Family Search has the place of the marriage as Fort Fairfield, but doesn't Caribou hold the records for Fort Fairfield?  The church was in Caribou.

I want the documents so I can go back another generation, hopefully to Ireland, and determine who Michael Malloy's parents were. I know Michael was married to both of these women and if I had the documents to show who he was and who his parents were it would just confirm everything for me.

I know....lots of questions. Hope someone can help me out with the answers.

Thank you,

Hi Jackie:

The state record for Michael's second marriage in 1897 should give his parents names, since he probably gave the info himself. (the state of maine began registering vital records in 1892)     Where did he die? His death record should have his parents names also, but not as reliable as his marriage record. If you are lucky, the marriage record *could* possibly give a specific location of birth in Ireland. I have seen it happen.

Did Michael become a citizen?  Those records could possibly provide additional birth information for him.

I havent been doing much research in the last year & just thought I
would toss up a question for general discussion.

My Maine Famiy ancestry dates from the earliest years. Is/are there
any new publications, books, gen records, Govt archives, ship records
or web sites with breakthroughs in family lines?

Allways looking to fill in some of the missing pieces!

I posted this on my website, but wanted to share with those of you who
don't frequent the site on a regular basis...

earlyMaine.org has recently acquired

"Roster and Statistical Record of Company D, of the Eleventh Regiment
Maine Infantry Volunteers, with a Sketch of Its Services in the War of the
Rebellion."(1890)

The 83 page text includes a history of the Company itself, as well as a
roster and many biographical sketches of the Company's members.

We would like to put the full text of this book online, but until that is
accomplished, I am willing to do lookups for people that you expect may be
included in the test

If you would like a lookup done, please email me at:

and put "Company D Lookup Request" in the subject of your email

We are now planning our family reunion again for Saturday, September
9, 2006 at the Columbia Town Hall, Epping Road, Columbia, Maine and
we need more recipes for an ongoing project of putting a family
recipe book together. Please submit one or more of your favorite
family recipes to me as soon as possible so I can get them organized
and submitted.

Come join us in celebrating 30 years of the Worcester Reunion.
There will be a potluck luncheon at 11:30 A.M. Bring whatever will
go with our famous Marafax Bake Beans and American chop suey made
the way our Columbia ancestors have done for years.
We also have a silent auction: please bring 1 or more items, it can
be old or new, highly valued or worthless, precious or funny,
homemade or strictly sentimental.

We still have a few last year Worcester mugs and trivets on sale.

Some genealogy information on the Worcester's and some photo album's
of past reunions in one area provided by yours truly. Am always
looking for more Worcester info and copies of pictures of ancestors
of Columbia, Maine. I am trying to put together a history of the
Town of Columbia and welcome all pictures of the town.

We can use some help on the auction table this year. This
fundraiser and the dues help with the expense of the reunion. We
love to socialize, so come and meet the rest of the family.

Looking for information on a Johnson family in Maine (possibly N.H. at some time).

My Grandmother's records has that "Grampy Johson" died 1869; and that "Grammie Johnson" died 09-04-2906 (no first names).

Her father (their son) was William S. Johnson b. May, 1858 and d. 1917.  Children's birth records (all but one) indicate that he was born in Houlton, Maine.  I have been given a picture of him taken in Farmington, N.H. so am wondering if he lived in that area for a time.

Family says that he married ??? and had two sons who die young.  Family folk lure has it that his wife ran off with a traveling salesman, leaving him broken-hearted.

At the age of 33 William married Allura Tarbox in 1891 in Perham, Aroostook County, Maine.

William had a brother Loren (b. 1861) who married Edith ?? and had at least two chilfen:  Percy and Steve.  Loren probably lived in or near Crystal, Maine - at least at the time of William's death (William was said to be visiting Loren there when he died).

Another brother was Ed (believed to have been born Oct 02, 1863 and died June 05, 1938).  He owned a harness shop in Washburn, Aroostook County, Maine.  Ed married ??? and had at least one child:  Gladys who later married Guy E. McCubrey - possibly from Washburn, Maine.

The 1880 Census has Loren S. Johnson (age 19) living in Washburn - listed as son of Netta Smith (age 39).

The 1900 Census has Edward Johnson (age 36) living in Washburn - listed as son of Loryette E. Rediker (age 59).

The 1900 Census also lists William S. Johnson (age 42) living in Washburn, Maine with wife Allura (age 28) and lists their 3 children.

Since "Grampy" Johnson died in 1869, it is conceivable that "Grammie" could have re-married prior to the 1880 census to a Smith.  Sometime within the next 20 years, she could have married again - this time to a Rediker.  Might Netta be a nickname for Loryette?

Is there anyone out there who might be able to help me with this brick wall??  Any help or suggestions welcome.

I have checked with the Aroostook County Seat, Maine State Archives in Augusta, several towns in Northern Maine......

Many thanks for any help you can give me.
Joyce

Hi All,

Well, summer is starting to wind down. Kids are back to school or
getting ready to go, and those research trips will be winding down
before we know it. If you haven't been lately, there are a couple
of new things on www.earlyMaine.org that you may find of interest.

We now have a .pdf copy of the following texts available for viewing
on http://www.earlyMaine.org Each of these files are large (about
2Meg each) so please be patient if you have a slow internet
connection. If you have trouble accessing these files, and would
rather get them on a CD, please contact me and I will discuss that
possibility with you:

Roster and Statistical Record of Company D of the Eleventh Regiment
Maine Infantry Volunteers, With A Sketch Of Its Services in the War
Of The Rebellion.

Docket: Supreme Judicial Court, Kennebec County, March Term, 1873

The Boyd Family by Arthur S. Boyd

Also, if you haven't checked out our gravestone photo project, there
has been a tremendous amount of activity there over the past few
weeks. We now have more than 200 photos online, representing more
than 400 individual records. A lot of photos have recently been
posted for Penobscot County, as well as some from Cumberland County.

As always, everything on earlyMaine.org is free to access. Happy
Hunting!

Dear Listers,

I am trying to track down information on my ancestor Lucretia (Brown) wife of Job Doughty.
according to the census she was born ca 1818. Her husband Job was born 20 Jan 1814 in Cumberland.
Married ca 1832. Job and Lucretia are buried on Great Chebeague Island, ME stones only say
J.D. and L.D. no dates available. I have searched the internet and have found nothing on Lucretia.
Family history says that her mother may have been named Mary. As their was a supposable bible that said
Mary Brown her book. Job is not listed in the 1880 census. Lucretia isnt listed in the 1870 census either. So she must have died after 1860 and before 1870.

Any suggestions as to where to look for Lucretia would be greatly appreicated.
