You may have already seen this reference but Perley M. Leighton in 1989
published a 2-volume work titled "A Leighton Genealogy". Volume 1 page 531
includes the following information excerpted from the Gardner S. and Minerva
(WHITNEY) LEIGHTON family.:

Sidney Lamont LEIGHTON, b. 29 Feb 1868, North Yarmouth, d. 19 Apr 1927,
North Yarmouth, 59y 1m 21d; unmarried. He farmed the family homestead.
There is no mention of any descendants.

Dear Listers,

I am hoping you can help me. I am researching John Marr

John Marr was born in Kittery, Maine bef Aug 3, 1755

Died 28 Jan 1829 in Georgetown (Marr Island), Maine

Married 11 Dec 1777 in Georgetown, Sagadahoc, Maine

Mary Cornish born 11 July 1745 in Brunswick, Cumberland, Maine

She died ca 1845 on Marr island living to be over 100 years old.

I have the info above from several sources.

According to the Book A History of Boothbay, Southport, and Boothbay Harbor, Maine 1623-1905

Pg 584 it lists John as “John Marr was a Rev War soldier, serving under General Putnam”. That is ALL it says.

I need to find out the name of the Regiment, Company, section of service and rank he was for proof of his service to submit my

Application to the DAR. (Daughters of the American Revolution)

The only John Marr I have been able to find is

John Marr Seaman, Ship “Protector” commanded by Capt John Foster Williams

Engaged March 27, 1781 service 1 month 8 days; reported captured May 5, 1781

This from Mass Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution pg 233 Volume 10

Would anyone have any suggestions as to where else I can look?

I know I can write to the national archives and the state archives but if he served under

General Putnam how would I find out more?

Does anyone know what Regiment, Company that General Putnam commanded?

From Maine? Mass? Ct?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thank you.

Don't know how useful this might be, but came across it regarding John Marr
and thought I'd send it along. Regards, - Jeanne

From the extended notes on people in the novel by Sarah Orne Jewett, The
Tory Lover

John Marr: This local man is reported missing in New Jersey battles of 1778
(Ch. 28). In fact there was a John Marr of Kittery (1720 - c. 1778), though
it has not been confirmed that he died while serving in the Revolutionary
Army. According to Marr family web sites, this John Marr was the son of John
Erskine, of Scotland, who changed his name upon emigrating in 1717, taking
the name from the man the family believes to be John Erskine Marr's father,
John Erskine, Earl of Mar.
      W. D. Spencer's "A List of the Revolutionary Soldiers of Berwick"
(1898) lists a William Mars, who served in 1777 under Captain Hodsdon, and
in 1780 at Falmouth. Fisher & Fisher lists a John Marr of Kittery as serving
in the American Revolution (505).
In 1901, Jewett was in correspondence with a John Marr of Rochester,
N.Y. In a letter of 22 May, Marr indicates that he is sending Jewett a book
containing information about Thomas Johnson, the last survivor of the
Bonhomme Richard. He also explains that one man who was confined in the Mill
Prison and later served under Jones was Thomas Hammett, the brother of Sarah
Hammett Marr, his great-grandmother (Houghton bMS Am 1743 (146)).
Vital Records of Berwick ... (362) lists Mr. John Marr of South Berwick
and Miss Elizabeth E. Perry of Keene, N.H. 15 January 1848, marriage
certified 22 January. If Elizabeth Perry is related to Jewett's mother,
Jewett may be related to this John Marr. In his 22 May letter, Marr shows
familiarity with South Berwick and says he is now the second oldest man
still living who was born in his "section."

Hi Susan,

I think your best bet is to get in touch with some of the DAR people in Maine.  I was sent papers on Blackwood as I am trying to prove that line for DAR.  Someone out there may have the first few gens already proved for you.  Are you already in DAR?  If it's a supplemental line, you will need to do alot of the work yourself.  If it is the line you use to join, there are lots of great DAR genealogers who will help you.  Let me know if you need some contacts.  There is a DARlings list that has been very helpful to me.  Warmly, Peggie

Thomas Arey, II and Elmira

I do know they were married and have from census records their children. Their first child was born in 1831 if that helps. I do not have the date of Thomas and Elmira's marriage.  I do know Thomas' father was Crosby Arey but apparently there were two Crosby Arey's in the area (Gouldsboro and Vinalhaven).  I am working on trying to find out which Crosby was my Thomas' father. It is confusing me to no end!  Any information listed in your book would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Just a hello,

I joined on several days back and have not seen any activity. Guess
you all talked yourselves out before I got here! :D

Well, I am still in that ambitious mode - gathering all I can,
organizing the data, drawing up a family tree, seeking leads on dead
ends, etc. - which is what brought me here~

One leg of my family leads back to the very early days of Maine
territory and I have been thrilled to see all the connections there!
Among the family names are:

Bartlett - Bittfield - Chase - Crosby - Currier - Griffin - Hale -
Hutchinson - Jewett - Merrill - Morse - Moulton - Noyes - Perkins -
Philbrick - Poor(e) - Pickard - Platt - Roberts - Sargent - Sawyer -
Shattswell - Weed - Wheeler - Winsley - Wood - Yoeman

Some of these names hale from the early 1600's Mass & NH but all lead
down to my GG Grandmother Sylvia Philbrick b. 1832/d. 1865, Jefferson
Maine. I have worked out a great deal on her family & ancestors but
scarcely a thing on her Husband - John J. (S) Sutherland - who
emigrated from Upper Canada in 1852. I am interested in extending and
sharing any of my current information on Sylvias ancestors and have
some great internet sites that have been tremendous help, but am
seeking a needle in the haystack on her husband.

As I settle in and get a feel for the group I will post some queries
for further info on my list, but for now..... Hello!

Welcome, David ~

It's a pleasure to have you join us. Although I don't share any surnames with
you, I'd be surprised if you aren't able to connect with others on the list. At
the very least, you'll find lots of friendly folk who will do all they can to
help further your research. Post your query/queries and let's see what we can
do. ;-)

Again, welcome aboard!

OK ~ What I have received thus far has been
wonderfully helpful on the family lines above Sylvia
Philbrick b.1832. That particular area I have much
underway and your input has helped to confirm atleast
three namesakes so far. But I have another ancient
Maine family line that I currently have very little on
and hear there is a great deal allready documented.

My Gg Grandfather followed the Philbrick family and
sailed around South America and came to settle
Catalina Island off the coast of California. He
hailes from the Waldo and Saghadoc Maine areas. His
name was Jacob Willey, son of John Willey (b.1801) &
Nancey Thompson.
Jacob Married Frances Snowman, daughter of William
Snowman (b.1796) & Mary Weymout (b.1797).

If you have any info on these lines it would also be
appreciated!

Ever greatful,

David V. Moore

Hoping to find someone else researching these lines:

Anne Dorcas TAYLOR (d/Edward Taylor & Hannah Boyd)
born May 1849 Robbinston, Washington, ME
married Aaron LORING on 11 Apr 1872 in Robbinston. Aaron was born 5
May 1848 in Topsfield, ME.
They had 4 girls all born in Robbinston and then headed out west,
stopping in Washoe County, NV to make their home.

Annie's grandparents were William TAYLOR and Hannah HAMMOND both from
Eastport, Washington Co., ME on her fathers side while Hannah BOYD's
parents are still a puzzle to us.

Aaron's parents were Joseph LORING & Eliza KNEELAND, both from the
Eastport area.

Does anyone have a book on Eastport? If so could you please see if
it mentions William Taylor of Washington County please.

He was born c1770 in England and immigrated before 1792, probably
arriving in Canada before heading into America.

In the town orders of Eastport I found mention of the oldest
lumberman living in the area.

The 1850 Eastport says this William is deaf.

I have never been to Maine so these questions may seem strange but
from the few pictures I have seen of Eastport on line it is an island
so where would a lumberman work? I'm sure back in 1800 they
couldn't go that far away to work each day.

Appreciate any help and if you know of places I can view informtion
on Eastport please let me know.

Thanks,

I'm researching the family of Robert McKown of Bristol, Maine. Robert was married to Margaret Nickles, daughter of Capt. Alexander Nickels of Fort Frederick.

Robert's father was killed at Sheepscot, sometime in the 1720s and Robert Jr. was captured and taken to Canada.

I'm interested in Robert's family at Sheepscot.

thanks, Charles
