“We are the Revolution that happens every 15 minutes”
-vaimoana litia makakaufaki niumeitolu, MAHINA MOVEMENT
Mahina taken from the Tongan word, Moon and from the Spanish word, Imagíne, Mahina Movement (Gabriella Callender, Erica DeLaRosa and vaimoana litia makakaufaki niumeitolu) is a trinity who hail from Hollis, Queens, New York; San Antonio, Texas and Provo/Orem, Utah of North America. Their Cultures (African American & Irish/German, Chicana, Tongan) and communities inspire them to create songs, (music that fuses folk, blues and Hip Hop) poems, dances and paintings (sometimes live!) to raise awareness and visibility around political and social injustices, to celebrate and encourage a consciousness, and most definitely, to Represent!
Born and based in New York City in the Summer of 2000, Mahina Movement has consistently performed all over New York City and the Nation. Each Month since June 2003, they showcase artists, community leaders and/or Speakers at SOUL NATION, an event they created and produce to inspire, educate and give information that will strengthen our communities in political, spiritual, artistic, technological and cultural ways. SOUL NATION is held the second Friday of each month at Bluestockings Bookstore in the Lower East Side, New York City, New York.
