This is a group of people that live in the Madison Wisconsin area and have a common interest in Guatemala, its people and issues. We initially got together in October 2005 to coordinate our activites to help our friends in Guatemala who were affected by the floods and mudslides associated with Hurricane Stan. We continue to meet and share information.

GUATEMALAN ACTIVIST VISITS MADISON TO DISCUSS OPPOSITION TO HYDROELECTRIC DAM

MADISON, WI -- On April 21st and 22nd, Madison Guatemala Network (MGN) will host several events featuring Guatemalan activist Jeronimo Osorio Chen, in collaboration with a national speaking tour organized by Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA).

Mr. Chen will discuss opposition to the Xalalá hydroelectric dam, a massive development project that would displace indigenous communities and damage the ecosystem in the Ixcán, Quiché region of Guatemala.

The speaker represents the Ixcán Referendum Commission, a grassroots group that engages in education, organizing, and legal strategies to ensure that the people of Ixcán determine their own resource use and development priorities.
