This is a group for the academic and practical study of the theory, method, and limitations of machine translation or computer-assisted translation. Relevant topics include the merits of current machine translation programs, report of new developments in machine translation theory, sharing of resources related to machine translation, queries regarding the algorithms of machine translation, debate on the merits of rule-based and statistical approaches, and announcement of new projects in machine translation. All source and target langauges are legitimate subjects of discussion, including popular languages such as English, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Russian, and Arabic as well as dead languages such as Latin or classical Greek. Also on-topic are artificial languages like Esperanto and controlled languages like PACE. Neophytes, non-programmers, and non-bilingual people as well as researchers and translators are invited to join and participate.
