What is MURS?

MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service) is a no-license VHF personal radio service which operates on 151.82/151.88/151.94/154.57/154.60 MHz. The FCC MURS rules permit up to 2W of transmitter power for simplex voice/data communications in personal and business applications. External gain antennas are allowed, so it is possible to create quite efficient mobile and base stations.

Modified MURS rules enacted in Nov. 2002 moved MURS type certification from FCC Part 90 to 95, and invoked Motorola-induced cross-service type-acceptance restrictions. The goal of these misguided and self-serving changes was to undo the original intent and spirit of MURS (which was to legalize the thousands of low-power Part 90 itinerant handhelds in use at the time), and to stifle fair competition... the change did slow down industry from introducing new type-accepted MURS radios. Yet, most any older Part 90 VHF handheld can still be used on some MURS freqs; Midland MURS22 and TEKK NT-10 are examples, and there are still Part90/95 approved MURS radios available new, such as the MURS Alert, Vertex VX-160, or Kenwood TK-2100. But many individuals, in the spirit of the original MURS rules, buy new Part 90 2W handhelds pre-programmed for the 5 MURS freqs, like the TEKK XT-10. Also, some modify ham 2m handhelds like the Yaesu VX-150 to function on MURS.
