Mothering Maxim – Belonging

How you treat other people is how you feel about yourself. You spot it - you got it. So I only spot greatness in other people. - Rita, WGACA

Mum Moment – Being a Team Player

One of the life-long benefits of being part of a gym, swim, or football team is learning how to be a good sport.

What’s a good sport? It’s a person who:
· Shows respect for their own team and the other team;
· Tries to help those who lose to feel good;
· Congratulates the winners.

Children learn to be good sports during practice. Under pressure, children usually display learned behaviours. If children learn to be good sports during practice, they are more likely to be good sports during the games. Players shouldn’t criticise others or throw tantrums (or any other objects) when things don’t go their way.

Children learn to be good sports by watching their parents. Children’s sports can bring out childish behaviour in adults. As someone said, “I really enjoy the kids; it’s the other parents who drive me crazy”. Children learn from watching us, so cheer for your team, not against the opponents.

Children’s priorities in playing sports are often different from our own. The concepts of “winning” and “losing” are abstract, especially for younger children whose main goal is to have fun. By modelling good sportsmanship, we help our children enjoy organised sports.

From A Mother’s Heart

We can teach them some life lessons that extend far beyond the boundaries of childhood and a playing field.

Enjoy your children as you prepare for the end-of-year ‘3-ring circus’. Plan for calm in the midst of activity. Make family time sacred above all else.

Yours faithfully,
