Mothering Maxim – Affirmation

I’m told I’m capable and loveable – utterly loveable.

Mum Moment – Mirror Messages

Meeting our child’s need for affirmation means mirroring specific messages such as:

· I’ll always love you! Nothing you can ever do or say or even think will change my love for you. When you do something bad, like tell a lie, I won’t like what you do but I’ll always love you.

· I believe in you! I know you, and I believe that you are growing and becoming all that you can be. When I see you sharing your book with your sister, I see you are growing into a kind person.

· I’m on your side! No matter what happens or what you feel, I’m on your side. When a friend makes fun of you or is just plain mean, you can know that I will always stand up for you!

· I’m your greatest fan! When others look away or hurt your feelings, I will continue to cheer for you. I’m on your side. I’m crazy about you! I want to hear your words, see your discoveries, and enjoy your creative mind because all these things make you who you are.

When a child receives these messages consistently and knows they are from the heart, he develops confidence that he is indeed loveable and therefore can risk loving others.

From A Mother’s Heart

Who can better affirm their children than Mum? Mums are the ones who live in the day-to-day world of their children, observing victory, defeat, acceptance and rejection, contentment and frustration.

Mums are the ones who have a unique opportunity to influence their children by reflecting their preciousness. As mothers, we are our children’s first mirrors, reflecting back to them their worth.

Mums, you have an important role.
