I have no idea how to utilize the WRAP functions on the Macintosh version.
There seems to be no application for the Mac, and nothing is said in the help
files.

Hello all,

The NBEMS team has provided a very useful tool for MT63 (as well as any other
mode) with a new feature called WRAP.

WRAP is a simple program that calculates a checksum feature for a single
transmission. This feature allows an unlimited number of stations to confirm
100% accurate receipt of a message as apposed to having to make a one on one
connection with an ARQ mode.

Check out NBEMS/FLDIGI and the WRAP feature. We're using the combination of
MT63 and WRAP for emcomm here in Western PA and it's starting to catch on across
the country.

One more excellent tool for emcomm!

Here's part of a post I made to our wpaNBEMS yahoo group which has tips for
newer users of MT63. Try NBEMS/FLDIGI with the WRAP checksum feature.

We had a great ragchew net tonight with yet another new check in who copied our
MT63 bulletin on his first try. Actually, we almost had a clean sweep on the
MT63 bulletin tonight, and I'd like to shoot for 100% all around the table.

MT63 can be a bit tricky. Make sure you go to configure, modems, and then to the
MT63 tab to make sure you have 64 bit interleave and extended characters
checked.

I think one of the key issues with MT63 is calibration of the sound card. We've
discussed this before but we have a lot of new folks here so I'd like to point
to the calibration instruction on our website:
http://www.wpanbems.org/fldigi_calibration.htm

Also, I did a uTIPu video on calibration that folks might find helpful:
http://www.utipu.com/app/tip/id/9382/

One thing to keep in mind with MT63 is the tuning on the waterfall is somewhat
critical, but I think this is more of an issue due to the relatively light
signature as compared to Olivia and some of the narrower modes. You can just see
Olivia better on the waterfall and you'll notice that Olivia produces 2 sets of
alternating tones at the beginning of each transmission, which really show up
well and helps receiving stations tune to the signal. MT63 1k long (64 bit
interleave) is really spread out over the audio spectrum and much harder to see
especially under weak conditions.

To help with tuning on MT63, we put out a 1k tone (see the tune button at the
top right side of the FLDIGI screen) before we transmit the MT63 signal so that
receiving stations can center the tone to the 1000 Hz mark on the waterfall
using the rig VFO in fine tune mode.

Here's another very important point regarding the tuning of MT63... once the
transmission starts, receiving stations will take up to 15 seconds or so for the
software to grind away at the massive amount of forward error correction. This
is normal. But a big mistake I made when first trying to copy MT63 on HF was to
not wait for decode, and I would try to re-tune while trying to receive the
signal. Each time you re-tune, you have another 15 seconds or so before the
software syncs and if you constantly re-tune, it'll never produce any print.

Subject: 40m digital bulletin schedule
kb3fxi
Send Email Send Email

Hello all,

Several operators and groups in digital emcomm are considering a bulletin
transmission on a fixed 40m frequency and schedule.

The plan would be to first transmit a short/concise 16/500 Olivia message for
far reaching weak signal work followed by a more detailed MT63 bulletin. I would
imagine that the two transmissions combined wouldn't take more that 5 minutes of
airtime at the most, including the time to switch between the two modes.

In both transmissions we could give an email address for propagation reports.
Also, we could rotate through different stations for the transmissions.

We're looking at Saturdays at 2pm local, 1800z as a possible schedule.

My thought with the bulletin schedule covers several points.

1) Propagation testing for daytime ops when 80m gets very difficult at times. I
picked 2pm Eastern because this is usually when 80m starts to get really tough.
2) I think a bulletin schedule would help bring new ops aboard by allowing them
to copy the bulletins, while sitting at their station, in a very low-pressure
way, and hopefully some will respond by email where we could encourage them to
check in on the many digital nets popping up around the country
3) Finally, I think the bulletins would encourage the idea of leaving a rig and
FLDIGI set on a designated bulletin frequency in an unmanned operation for
receiving bulletins via wrap which are conveniently and automatically saved in
the wrap file folder.

And, for clarification purposes, I am not promoting the idea of an automated
bulletin. We would have an op schedule and policy that would absolutely forbid
transmissions over active qso's, even if the other transmissions are automated
stations.

I've done a little basic research but I'm sure there might be nets or call
frequencies that we'll want to steer clear of.

These seem to be bad choices:

7.100 - 7.105 - Pactor (automated/unattended)
7.108 - CW Novice
7.110 - CW Novice
7.121 - CW QRP / Rockmite

Possible Bulletin Frequencies:

7.0755
7.117
7.122
7.0925

The 7.0925 USB freq may be a good choice. I picked it because 7.095 is the W1AW
bulletin freq 6pm Eastern (BPSK31, RTTY and MFSK16 when time allows) and in a
communications emergency, ARRL recommends monitoring W1AW for special bulletins
there at 15 minutes past the hour.

7.0925 is just down enough that at the top edge of the waterfall we would see
the w1aw signal but be far enough away to not interfere. Even if we were
operating MT63 1k, we would have enough space for a 500hz Olivia signal above
without overlaping the w1aw signals.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hello all,

Western Pennsylvania will be active with the SET drill this Saturday morning
with NBEMS/FLDIGI on 3.5835 USB, Olivia 8/500 for keyboard and MT63 1k long
interleave (64 bit) for bulletins and spreadsheets.

This will be a directed net so please stand by until we put out the call for
stations outside of WPA. We welcome participation from all!

I just got back from a planning session tonight and it looks like the SET will
be great this year for WPA.

-Dave, KB3FXI

BTW, I will be operating as NCS for most of the event under the Skyview Radio
Society call WX3SKY.

I have yet to hear any MT63 xmiting on 20 or 30 meters, any activity anymore and
what frequency is being used.
I dont know if it is a real data grabber with a nice punch into the airwaves or
not, but it certainly could use some more activity on this mode, although the
band conditions have been poor in most cases.

I am using fldigi or mixw on this mode at the present moment.

I'm using IZ8BLY MT63 Terminal and have been for over a year on an old laptop
running Windows ME. With that combination I am able to save the messages
received by highlighting the text, copying with <ctrl> C and pasting to a text
editor.
I have three machines running XP Pro, SP3 that are used for testing software,
etc. I am unable to save the messages on the XP machines in any combination of
Compatibility Mode. All three machines will send and receive messages OK but I
haven't figured out how to save them.
Any ideas? Or is it a problem with the IZ8BLY Terminal?
Thanks in advance.

I've taken the step of removing membership for several cretins (you KNOW who you
are!) who have been sending unwanted trash to our group.

If you think you have been tossed off the list when you don't deserve to be,
this may be because your email address has been hijacked by one of these
cretins.

If this is the case, send me verification of your credentials (name, callsign,
interests) and an alternative CLEAN email address, and I'll see about
reinstating you.

If you are a victim, I can well understand your annoyance, but remember that
this list has 688 members, so their annoyance carries more weight! Only you can
sort out the theft of your email ID, and the best way is to start with a new ID.
