Re-read it - he is saying that he does not PROVIDE information
on MT63.

I don't see what that means he needs to be "educated."

I would bet Buck kows plenty about this great mode....

See you all on 14,109.5 kc/s MT63 soon!

In case any newbies on this reflector aren't aware, this supposed patch is a
virus. The attachment has been stripped by the reflector software, so there's no
danger here, but you may receive similar messages in other contexts with the
attachment intact.

Ironically, if you follow the links included (for authenticity) in the message,
you'll come to Microsoft's own warning about this kind of message, and the
statement that their updates are never sent out as attachments, but are
available only by download from the MS site!

All,

Thanks to Howard for reminding everyone about the virus spammer that
left these fake Microsoft messages on the reflector. Microsoft does
not email directly to consumers regarding products, technical
support, upgrades, patches, etc. Any such email is spam and most
likely contains a virus or worm.

I have banned this particular spammer from the membership list but
everyone should be on alert for other fake information that gets
through occasionally to the message board.

Our ARES/RACES group used MT63 to pass written (printed)messages during an
emergency exercise last week. It was done on 2 meter FM, 2000 Hz, wide
interleave. Some messages were pre-written and in Word format. It was easy
to move them from Word to the MT63 programs. Other messages were hand
written by the participants, given to us, and we typed them into the program
for transmission. Being able to transmit the messages at 250 WPM was much
more efficient than trying to pass them using voice. We were very pleased
with the way that everything worked as well as were the others who
participated in the exercise.
By the way, if you need a very small, battery-powered, portable printer,
check out the Pentax Pocket Jet 200. It measures 1.18 by 2.17 by 10 inches
and weighs 1.12 pounds including its NiCd battery. It is a thermal printer
that uses special paper and only prints black. A roll paper adapter is
available. The print quality is superb and is as fast as any printer that I
have ever seen. The cost of the basic unit is $320. Check it out at
www.pentaxtech.com.

Is there a generally accepted specification about transferring binary
files over MT63 ? And if so, where can I find it?

There has been some interest in exactly this same within ARES people
here. Although I'm sure no-one wants to use Word format but that's
another issue... :)

Thanks Mike,

This is the very reason many lists ban such topics related
to virae or viral warnings, but there always seems to be some
good soul doing their civic duty (or what they perceive it to be)
by posting warnings and then getting defensive when someone tells
them to knock it off... Go figure.

In this case, however, since the attack was actually perpetrated
IN this list - I see no problem with making note of it, here...
And even though I'm not a bit concerned about it on this end
(Linux), Thank you Howard, for the reminder of why I ran away
screaming at high speed in the opposite direction from WinDohs
a number of years ago. ;)

I suppose at some point SOME devilish soul will figure out a
way to infect Linux and OS/2, and on that day I guess I'll be
looking for the next securable OS... OS's come and go, Windohs
time has come and gone - it's time for the rest of the 'newbies'
to move onto the next OS so as not to clutter things up for those
of us already there. If everyone would just say NO! to Windohs
these virus' would go away for the most part...

Hello all. I can remember some years ago when I was playing around
with 2 meter packet that there was a program called "YAPP" that could
be used with the PK232/computer terminal type of setups. I had
pretty much forgotten about "YAPP" until I noticed that MixW
supports "YAPP" in the drop-down menus.

Since "YAPP" will support full binary transfers, I wonder if that
would be the answer to your question. Does MT63 support binary file
transfers on its own, or do you have to use it in conjunction
with "YAPP" in order to get the files from one rig to another?

I am quite interested in this because I helped the locally based but
region-wide FEMA Academy set up a portable packet system some time
back and would like to see where the technology has gone during the
time I have been inactive in that mode.

MT63 is naturally 7-bit only, so binary transfers need some glue
to work over MT63. The IZ8BLY MT63 has a mechanism for binary
transfer but so far I haven't found a specification for it (one of
these days I'll boot to windows and see if I can figure it out
my self... :)

Hi Tommi

When using the IZ8BLY programme we have found that you need
to have two instances of the programme loaded onto the computer
- just set one copy up as normal - used for tuning purposes -
with the other you need to edit the config file and switch off the waterfall
- then use this copy of the programme for sending binary files -
You need to have both ends of the link with the waterfall switched off
if you use the copy which has the waterfall running to pass binary files you
will get
a - divide by - error but you wont get this error when using the
copy of the programme which has the waterfall disabled

YOU CAN USE THE FREQUENCY ERROR DATA AT THE BOTTOM FOR TUNING BUT
WE HAVE FOUND IT EASIER JUST TO HAVE THE TWO INSTANCES OF THE
PROGRAMME ON THE COMPUTER AND AFTER THE INITIAL CONTACT JUST CLOSE
THE WATERFALL VERSION DOWN AND START UP THE VERSION WITHOUT THE WATERFALL
RUNNING

Hope this may help

All,

I trying to help a freind who is having trouble copying MT63. He gets
mostly garbage with occasionallty a word or two. Signals that others can
copy on MARS nets he has trouble with. He has the same problem with IZ8BLY
MT63 and MixW.

We have been communicating via radio, email and telephone. Here is the list
of I have checked but still no joy;

He has used two different computers. I know one of them, his primary one,
is a Pentiurm III.

All radio filters are wide.

He has a simple receive only set-up and copies soundcard Amtor and PSK31
with no problem.

He is getting a strong waterfall pattern placed exactly between the lines.

All operations have been on USB.

"Paper" is on in IZ8BLY

He mostly get an "Out of synch" and low confidence readings (with IZ8BLY).

Mode is set correctly- we have tried 1000 and 2000Hz (on the MARS
frequencies) with long interleave.

I am out of ideas. Here it is hard not to get solid copy on MT63
signals....even with a laptop with no interface (just sound from the radio
speaker), and signals over 100 Hz off freq.......so what am I missing. I
would really like to help him with this mode which is ideal for MARS FEC
traffic handling under poor conditions.

Thanks

Hi!

I had the same problem...i used first the "on board" sondcard. There
were no way to fit with MT63. All other mode were running fine by the
way psk, mfsk...). I disabled the on board soundcard and use now a cheap
soundblaster or Terratec...both working fine !

I don´t know if this is your problem also (cause you checked already
different computers..)....

I have occasionally seen MT63 stations that I was not able to copy and never
figured out why.

Make sure the MixW sample rate is 8000 or 11025 Hz. I accidently changed mine
once and some modes would not work properly.

Use the sound card clock adjust function in MMSSTV
(an excellent SSTV sound card software in case you have never heard of it)
to determine if the sound card clock is off frequency.
If it is way off, it might affect copy.

MMSSTV has an excellent feature that measures the sound card clock error in
parts per million while receiving WWV/WWVH. You then enter that value into
MixW's
sound card settings. It is much easier to use and see than the calibration
function in MixW.

I'm surprised that Navy MARS allows you guys to use advanced
sound card modes like that.

MT63 is _very_ sensitive to samplerate errors. It doesn't need to
be way off to completely destroy performance. Pawel's original
notes mention needing better than 0.01% accuracy.

Nowadays, it's not uncommon to see soundcards that are >1% off.

So, like Tom says above, samplerate compensation is needed. On
windows, I think MMSSTV and MixW at least have the tools to do this.

Try <RSTR> - that should work.

I've had similar problems. I have tried plugging the output into the
input of my soundcard(s) to send and receive at the same time from the
same source but it still fails. Other computers that I have used have
worked fine.

I have narrowed my problem down to my computer - I got a new Turtle Beach
soundcard and that didn't fix the problem either.

I believe this is caused by RF noise inside the computer case coming from
the CPU or some other motherboard component - I can't figure what else
might be causing it.

It's also worth trying different wall outlets on different breakers.

hope this helps,
Jason

I've been gone for a few days and haven't had a chance to answer some
questions.
We used both MixW and IZ8BLY programs during our exercise. They seemed
to work equally well.
My experience with MT63 on weak or noisy FM signals has been limited.
During one test the signal that I received seemed noisy, yet the copy was
perfect and the "meters" in the IZ8BLY program were both pinned all the way
to the right. Someone, perhaps on another forum, reported that MT63 worked
best with the 2000 Hz bandwidth on 2 meter FM.
Some time ago I posted a query about my problem with getting the IZ8BLY
program to work on my Compaq laptop. I had to set the sample rate to 8000
to copy anyone else, but at 8100 for them to copy me. I have since tried
MixW and found that a setting of 11100 works in both transmit and receive.
So, I'm using MixW for all MT63 work now.

hi,

Just wondering if anyone works MT63 on 40 or 80 meters, and what
frequencies?

20 meters has very poor conditions after the sun goes down ;-)

Hi!

I id the last 3 nights some tests on 80m with mt63.

I know from i.e. 20m it works with extremely less signals
Still very good. But on 80m I have every time problems to decode
The signals...even though they are strong. Ok..it works but much
more difficult like on 20m. I tried to use it with 500Hz but there was
no really improvement.

Has someone similar experiences ?

Thanks!

Hi!

In our Region it is:

80m 3585 khz and 40m 7035 khz / usb

You also should find a lot of psk31 sigs on 40m from Europe at 7035 !

Hello all,

The November 2003 issue of QST magazine has a full page advertisement
for the AOR ARD9800. I bought two of them. Digital Voice using the Multi
Tone technology (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex [OFDM] ). Using
the MT63 nomenclature one might call this one MT35 wherein the first tone of
the 36 tones is tone zero. The system also uses Quadature Phase Shift
Keying (DQPSK). Interestingly enough, because it is digitized VOICE, it is
considered to be proper to use it on the Phone portions of the Ham bands
rather than on the Data portions. The first tone is at 300 Hertz and the
last tone is at 2.5 KHz, thereby fitting in the passband of the usual SSB
equipment. Also included is an automatic +/- 125 Hertz Automatic Frequency
Control (AFC). In addition, provision has been made for Keyboard to
Keyboard communication using the MT35 method. Icing on the cake includes
provision for Slow Scan Television (SSTV) also employing the MT35 method.

It is possible to download the manual from http://www.aorusa.com
... The manual is in the latest Acrobat 6.0 format which should be
downloaded (free)from the AOR website. One subject of immediate interest
to present MT63 users is the caution to NEVER connect microphone ground to
chassis ground lest one gets RF Feedback.

For those who don't know. Charles' original work, on which this is
based, can be seen here:

   http://www.chbrain.dircon.co.uk/dvhf.html

It's too bad that the voice codec (AMBE) is proprietary and patented.
An open source soundcard implementation of the mode would be easy
otherwise...

Both 20 and 40 meters are open, but there is no MT63 activity at all
  - We all know of the operations on 14,109.5 (1000 HZ, Long
Interleave, USB), but do you know that there is some MT63 activity
around 7072-3 (500 HZ, Short Interleave, USB)in the evenings? - You
have to work around the packet stations, but it is a way to work MT63
in the evenings as the propagation conditions decline - However, we
need more folks to become active so as to generate enough interest to
sustain this hoped-for evening activity - CU there - 73, Dave, W3OQ

MT63 is one of the MOST effective modes on 80m. I have worked about 6
countries on under 5W, and that's no mean feat in the South Pacific with
more water than land!

MT63 is very effective against 80m noise, and also handles better than most
modes the drift associated with older rigs. Despite expected problems with
multi-path and Doppler, the mode is very good.

As an example, I worked Zk1DD (range 3000km or more) without once hearing
his signal, or he hearing mine!

Murray ZL1BPU
