We have a problem!  Trash was not collected in

the100 and 200 blocks of Bates Street NW

100 and 200 blocks of Q Street NW; and

1400 and 1500 blocks of 3rd street NW

There was a clear path to the alley on  Wednesday , the regular pick up day.  Currently , we have trash all over the place – whereas, neighbors’ trash cans  are overflowing with trash and garbage.

Finally, I spoke to Ms Bola about this issue.  It is my understanding that you are aware of the problem  The tracking # is 039143.

Thank you for your assistance.  We really need to get this trash collected today.  Then we can move forward with the  plan for next week,  however, we will have a serious sanitation problem if the current level of trash is not collected immediately.   People are sick, they have children – and the sanitation conditions are not good.

Dear DC Residents:

DPW announced today that certain sanitation services will be either suspended or altered to allow crews to battle what is forecasted to be this winter’s biggest snow storm and next week’s smaller snow storm.

Trash Will Be Collected from the Front, No Recycling Collections:  Next week, trash collections will be made from the front only.  Residents with alley collection are asked to place their trash in dark colored plastic (not paper) bags and place the bags at the curb for collection.  The bags should be put out for collection as close to morning of the collection day as possible and bleach may be added to the bags to help repel rodents.  Recycling collections will be suspended next week and residents are asked to hold onto their recyclables until the following week.  Please do not put household trash in the street litter cans.

Ft. Totten Transfer Station Closed to the Public:  This Saturday, February 6, the Ft. Totten Transfer Station will be closed to the public for both bulk trash and Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling/Document Shredding services.  Ft. Totten also will be closed to the public on Monday, February 8.

No Bulk Collections Monday, February 8:  DPW bulk collection drivers still will be on duty clearing the streets of snow.

Street Litter Can Collections to be Suspended:  DPW will suspend litter can collections starting Friday, February 4.  Collections are expected to resume by Wednesday, February 10.

DPW reminds residents that the District does not plow alleys due to lack of resources and space constraints for the plowed snow. Residents should work with their neighbors to keep alleys and also sidewalk areas clear.

Indeed there is a problem with DPW. The priority switched from regular trash collection services to frantic snow alert weeks ago. The first snow fell on uncollected trash, then melted and the same trash remains unmoved. I encourage concerned citizens to show up at the DPW performance oversight hearing and voice your displeasure. We deserve regular on-time trash collection without any excuses.

Update. Units responded, and a general lookout was broadcasted to other police
units in the city to be on a lookout for two African-American males wearing dark
clothes and facemasks fled in a dark gray vehicle from the area. Other than the
sound of gunshots, nothing else was found. Captain Aurigemma.

Metropolitan Police Department Cautions Pedestrians During Snow Removal

(Washington, DC) – Due to the impact of the snow, the Metropolitan Police Department is urging pedestrians to take the following precautions while crossing streets and roadways.

Walk on sidewalks whenever possible.

If you must walk in the street, walk facing the flow of traffic and as close to the curb as possible.

Always be aware of the movement of approaching traffic.

Wear a bright hat, scarf or reflective gear so that motorists can see you.

Make sure that whatever you wear does not inhibit your ability to see or hear traffic.

The Metropolitan Police Department and the D.C. Department of Transportation wish to remind motorists to exercise caution when driving as increased pedestrian activity can be anticipated.

Underground-only Metrorail and limited Metrobus service expected Monday
For immediate release: February 7, 2010

Metro staff continue to clear above-ground tracks

For Monday morning, Feb. 8, commuters should expect limited underground Metrorail service to start at 7 a.m., and very limited Metrobus service from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., as icy conditions on roadways and Metrorail tracks continue to be a barrier to providing safe service. MetroAccess service for Monday will be suspended for the entire day.

Metro staff continue efforts in clearing the above-ground tracks. However, continued re-icing of the electrified third rail and winds are blowing snow back onto the tracks are hampering Metro’s ability to restore service to the above ground tracks.

Fewer than two dozen Metrobus lines will be in service on Monday, Feb. 8, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. due to snowy and icy conditions that persist on the region’s roadways. Metrobuses will stick to snow emergency routes to start the day. Customers may want to take advantage of the next bus prediction technology to get an idea when the next bus will be arriving by logging onto Metro’s web site or calling 202-637-7000 and saying, “Next Bus.” Buses are expected to be moving slowly on the roads, which remain slippery.

Limited service will be established tomorrow on the following bus routes in the District of Columbia: the U8 line (Minn. Ave – Capitol Heights), the 64 line (Georgia Ave-Petworth– Fort Totten), the 50 line (14th and Colorado Ave) the 70 line (Silver Spring – Archives), the S4 line (Silver Spring – Federal Triangle) the 30 line (Friendship Heights – Potomac Ave) and the A line (Southern Ave to Anacostia). In Northern Virginia, the 16 line (Pentagon – Baileys Crossroads) the 1C line (Dunn Loring), 2C line (Dunn Loring), 17 line (Braddock Road) and 28 line (Alexandria – Tysons Corner). In Maryland, the Z2 and Z8 line (Silver Spring), the Q line (Silver Spring-Shady Grove), the Y line (Silver Spring –Norbeck Road), the F1 and F2 line (Takoma – Cheverly), the J2 line (Bethesda – Silver Spring), the J7/J9 line (Bethesda – Lake Forest Mall), and the P12 line (Eastover – Addison Road).

These routes are subject to change depending on the conditions of the roads. Bus service operations managers will monitor all of these areas with an eye toward returning service to those lines when road conditions improve and it is deemed safe for buses to drive along those streets.

Bus officials continue to stay in touch with the local departments of transportation to let officials in the local jurisdictions know where some of the biggest challenges exist for providing bus service in hopes that those areas can be cleared of snow and treated for icy conditions to allow for safe bus passage.

Metro officials cautioned riders to be mindful of slippery roads, which are being used as walkways because most sidewalks remain covered with snow. “Take your time when boarding a bus, as we know that there are huge piles of snow lining the edges of streets and blocking the bus stops,” said Dave Kubicek, Metro’s Acting Deputy General Manager for Operations. “Please do not to run to catch a bus or a train as it’s not worth a fall that could cause an injury.”

Metro has 86 stations and 106-miles of track. Forty-six stations along 50.5 miles of track are located underground and 40 stations along 55.5 miles of track are above ground. All 40 above-ground stations remain closed. On Monday, trains will be servicing stations at 24- to 30-minute intervals to the underground stations as follows:

Red Line – Medical Center to Union Station and Glenmont to Forest Glen
Orange and Blue Lines – Ballston to Stadium-Armory
Green Line – Fort Totten to Congress Heights
Yellow Line – Pentagon to Crystal City

During this snow emergency, the Metropolitan Police Department's online YahooGroups have received several postings with names of streets needing snow plows.  With the increase of such postings, we are providing the proper and most effective way to make these notifications to DC's Department of Transportation, along with links to additional information you may find helpful during this time.

#1- The Office of Unified Communications (also known as the 3-1-1 Call Center) has two ways for you to report icy streets in need of snow plows.  This is the fastest and most comprehensive way to get information directly to DC's Department of Transportation officials.  (Two Options Below)

Option 1- Dial 311 or the 10-digit equivalent to 311, which is 202.737.4404- Customer Service call takers are ready, 24 hours a day to take your requests and information about conditions on your street.  Please remember to provide the block number (2800 Block of Hartford Street) and quadrant (NW, SE, etc).  Note: In any life-threatening emergencies, please upgrade your call by dialing 9-1-1.

OR

Option 2- Report your street online by visiting the website immediately following this paragraph (below).  This is the same system/database the 311 Call Takers will use. Go to the site, next to the column that says,  "Service Type", select "SNOW/ICE REMOVAL" from the Drop-Down Menu OR  You can type in SNOW/ICE REMOVAL in the box that say, "Keywords".  From there, you will see an option at the bottom of your selection (in blue writing) that says, "Request This Service".  Click on to the writing in blue and enter your street name and block, along with any notes that you may have about the area, like (example: There is a white car on the block that was abandoned three days ago.)  You will continue to enter information and select "Next" until you have completed the request.  The site will guide you through all four prompts.  You will also receive a tracking number.

SITE FOR ONLINE REQUESTS FOR SNOW PLOWS: http://311.dc.gov/cwi/citizenweb/ui/citizenwebintake.aspx

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THAT MAY BE USEFUL

#2- Always check www.dc.gov for updated information from the Mayor's Office.  Gov't alerts are also posted at: https://textalert.ema.dc.gov/latest.php This includes Federal Govt and weather alerts in regards to the snow emergency.  To register for these alerts, which will arrive in your email device or your cell phone, via text messaging, visit: https://textalert.ema.dc.gov/register.php

#4- You can Track a City Map Viewing the Progress of the DDOT Snow Plows by visiting: http://snowmap.dc.gov/

#5- To View the City's Snow Emergency Vehicle Towing Policy or the List of Emergency Routes, visit:

#6- To get updated information on Metro's train and bus announcements, you can register for updates by visiting:  http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/news/subscribe.cfm or you can read latest updates by visiting Metro's main webpage at www.wmata.com  The updates will be in the middle of the page, and is normally accompanied by a photo.

#7- Metro has already published Today's update on this page: http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/news/PressReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=4287

This may have been a lot to digest, so my recommendation is to visit options #2 and #6 above, if you are unable to visit all sites.  These two options should get you the basic information most people will need during this weather emergency.  All major news stations will also have updates around the clock.

Thank you for your time.

***Snow Emergency in Effect in the District***

(Washington, D.C.) - Residents and visitors are reminded there is a snow emergency in effect in the District as of 4 p.m. today.  All vehicles must be moved immediately from snow emergency routes.

*       The routes are posted with red and white snow emergency route signs. Parking is banned on these routes to allow unimpeded curb-to-curb salting or plowing.

*       Illegally parked vehicles are subject to a $250 fine and additional fees for towing and storage at an impoundment lot. The Department of Public Works will no longer relocate vehicles in the neighborhoods.

*       To locate a towed vehicle, call 202-727-5000.

The District has identified parking spaces at the DC USA rental center located at the corner of 14th Street and Park Road in northwest for people who are unable to find on-street parking.  The entrance to the garage is located on Park Road.

Subject:        Fastest Way to Report Streets Needing to be Plowed

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THAT MAY BE USEFUL

#2- Always check www.dc.gov <http://www.dc.gov/>  for updated information from the Mayor's Office.  Gov't alerts are also posted at: https://textalert.ema.dc.gov/latest.php <https://textalert.ema.dc.gov/latest.php>  This includes Federal Govt and weather alerts in regards to the snow emergency.  To register for these alerts, which will arrive in your email device or your cell phone, via text messaging, visit: https://textalert.ema.dc.gov/register.php <https://textalert.ema.dc.gov/register.php>

#3- To View the City's Snow Plans, visit: http://www.ddot.dc.gov/ddot/cwp/view,a,1256,q,564084,ddotNav_GID,1586,ddotNav,|32397|.asp <http://www.ddot.dc.gov/ddot/cwp/view,a,1256,q,564084,ddotNav_GID,1586,ddotNav,|32397|.asp>

#4- You can Track a City Map Viewing the Progress of the DDOT Snow Plows by visiting: http://snowmap.dc.gov/ <http://snowmap.dc.gov/>

#6- To get updated information on Metro's train and bus announcements, you can register for updates by visiting:  http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/news/subscribe.cfm <https://outlook.dc.gov/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/news/subscribe.cfm>  or you can read latest updates by visiting Metro's main webpage at www.wmata.com <http://www.wmata.com/>   The updates will be in the middle of the page, and is normally accompanied by a photo.

#7- Metro has already published Today's update on this page: http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/news/PressReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=4287 <http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/news/PressReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=4287>

This may have been a lot to digest, so my recommendation is to visit options #2 and #6 above, if you are unable to visit all sites.  These two options should get you the basic information most people will need during this weather emergency.  All major news stations will also have updates around the clock.

Thank you for your time.

Greetings

I Live in ANC 5B. Over the past several weeks I have attempted
to contact my commissioner thru email and the phone number
posted on the ANC web page. After many attempts I am unable to
get a call back or an e-mail. This lack of response is very
disappointing!!!

Any advice on how to contact the commissioner. Don't
they have government funded cell phones???

The DC Department of Public Works has announced it will collect trash Friday, February 12, from the front properties of those homes with a Friday collection day.  Residents are asked to place their trash in dark colored plastic (not paper) bags and place the bags at the curb for collection.  No recycling will be collected Friday.

If it's a residential parking permit (RPP) restricted block, call 311 and select
option 2 (I think it is) for "city services" and ask that parking enforcement be
sent out to ticket cars without the respective parking permit on their
registration sticker.

Everyone can park up to two hours in any parking zone, but after that, they get
a ticket.

That's what I do to get the drug dealers who take up my spaces off of my block.

I believe there is a law which "reserves" one on street parking space per home
in residential areas in front of their home.  This has become a common problem
because many residents,, especially "new ones to a community" assume the "me,
myself & I" attitude when it comes to parking spaces, without regard or respect
for their neighbors, who one day, may have to come to their aid.  Many respond
when approached by other residents.  There is one block in Ward 4 I am aware
where the neighbors got together, decided to designate the parking in front of
their homes, and there is an area at the top of the street where visitors or
those w/extra cars must park, I repeat "must park", on the street above where
there is ample parking.  This rule was disrespected by employees of a newly
opened business, who had been notified of the rule before opening.  So the
neighbors got together & got Zoned parking.  Problem eliminated and money
collected for the city for violations.  Must note, there are mostly retirees, so
they are able to look out. Don't know your situation, but it might be something
to look at. You might want to check with DMV, DDOT, CM Thomas and/or CM Graham
offices, and your ANC commissioner for assistance/info.  Gigi
