Good afternoon. My name is Paul and I live in the 3400 block of 10th St. NE.
This morning I noticed that my DC-issued "supercan" was missing. I presumed it
was stolen.

Later, while on my way to work, I noticed several supercans lining the north
side of the 900 block of Lawrence St. NE. Upon futher investigation, I
discovered that one of the supercans on Lawrence (one that was closer to 10th
St., as opposed to (9th) was indeed mine.

At some point between 10pm, 09/01/09, and 9am 09/02/09, my trash can was stolen
and filled to the brim with all sorts or garbage/solid waste. Similar types of
waste filled other cans infront of one of the houses on the north side of the
900 block of Lawrence (the brown house, not the teal/aqua one). While I'm not
sure what the police can do about this peculiar situation, I would ask that
patrols keep an eye on that area.

Thanks very much for your exemplary service!

Paul

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder Announces $129 Million in Awards To Support Youth Mentoring

Today, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced more than $129 million in Recovery Act and Fiscal Year 2009 funds have been awarded for mentoring services to help prevent at-risk youth from becoming involved in delinquency.  The grants will also preserve and create jobs throughout the United States.

"The Recovery Act has allowed us to invest further in the future of today's youth by providing mentoring opportunities to help children reach their full potential," said Attorney General Holder. "These grants will help steer young people away from criminal activities by providing them with healthy life alternatives, positive role models and direct contact with caring adults."  The Recovery Act, signed into law by President Obama, provides the Office of Justice Programs' Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) with more than $85 million for national mentoring programs to reduce juvenile delinquency, violence, gang participation, school failure and dropout rates.

The Recovery Act National Mentoring award recipients are:

  • The Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Atlanta, GA ($44,400,000)
  • Goodwill Industries International, Rockville, MD ($19,160,337)
  • Public/Private Ventures, Philadelphia, PA ($17,829,110)
  • National Association of Police Athletic Activities Leagues, Inc., Jupiter, FL ($3,700,000).
  •

The statutes appropriating funds for Fiscal Year 2009 authorize OJJDP's National Mentoring Programs initiative. The awards of more than $44 million were made to programs that target underserved and at-risk youth.

The Fiscal Year 2009 National Mentoring award recipients are:

D.C. COURTS TO HOST INFORMATION EXCHANGE ON RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR IMMIGRANT AND SELF-REPRESENTED COMMUNITIES

WHAT:           Outreach Information Exchange -- Knowledgeable persons will discuss the resources available to immigrants, non-English

and less-than-proficient English speakers, and self-represented litigants courthouse.

WHEN:           Thursday, September 10, 2009 --  3:00 – 5:00 p.m.,

WHERE:         D.C. Court of Appeals

Historic Courthouse

430 E Street, NW

Washington, DC 20001

The D.C. Courts’ Standing Committee on Fairness and Access has reached out to immigrant communities, legal services providers, members of the Bar, court interpreters and others to gather recommendations on how to improve court access. One of the themes that emerged is that persons who provide services to immigrant communities, those who do not speak English or are less-than-proficient, and self-represented litigants are eager to learn more about the legal and other resources offered at the D.C.  Courts. To address this, the committee will conduct an Outreach Information Exchange. Organizations and persons who provide services to these populations are invited to attend.

Presenters will discuss resources in the areas of family & domestic relations, landlord/tenant, small claims, domestic violence, wills & probate, tax sales, appealing to the D.C. Court of Appeals, court interpretation, the Courts’ website, and access for persons with disabilities. Each presenter will describe briefly the scope of the services provided, the way the services are delivered, the location and hours of operation, and the resources available.

DMV Observes Labor Day Holiday

Washington, DC – Today the DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced that all DMV facilities will be closed Saturday, Sept. 5 and Monday, Sept. 7 in observance of the Labor Day Holiday.

In addition, DMV encourages residents to skip the trip and conduct DMV transactions online before and after each holiday, including Labor Day, due to the high volume of walk-in traffic during these times. The DMV is pleased to provide several driver/identification, vehicle, adjudication and general transactions online.

To view DMV’s holiday schedule for the remainder of the year, visit http://www.dmv.dc.gov and click on Closing Schedules under the “Information” header or call the Mayor’s Citywide Call Center at 311.

Thanks Patrick for the information. Believe it or not, the crime rate is steadily decreasing in all categories. These types of crimes and more were every day occurrences and truly drained our police resources and eroded the quality of life for all. We are still plagued by individuals that just do not get it; this is no longer an acceptable venue for committing crime and the police have increased their responsiveness. The statistics are real and we are becoming a less crime-ridden community. We must stay the course and continue to report crime and do everything possible to turn this community around for good.
