At 3100 Douglas St NE a tow truck drop wrecked vehicle and park his vehicle on
this parking lot for the last five years and I have called everybody and this
continue to happen. Who can I contract to stop this. I tried of looking at a lot
full of illegal parked vehicles.

Alice thompson can coordinate the inspection of the lot. She is very effective in getting to the bottom of these types of issues.

to Commander Greene and his crew for their response to mine on this forum. I, in
all honesty, am mildly surprised that 'something' would have been done and done
as swiftly as it was.

Although minor in comparison in crime stats, the minor ones can build into major
ones. I have heard that the DCPD have the situation on their blotter for follow
up.

I found this site through a WaPo article. It (this venue) is money well spent
and seems to be very effective - much more than what was available to the public
previously.

A job well done and TX to all involved.

I second that congrats to Commander Greene and the 502 team! And thanks
to you, x2j785, for reporting it.

"In transit" and "abandoned" vehicles -- even w/ properly placed Temp
Tags, may not be all that temporary or abandoned-- especially when
parked close to Metro stations. They may be serving as ready-to-go *zip
cars for perps* and/or rolling lockers for weapons and/or drugs.

Let's notice it all and report it all.

Brian, your note of appreciation and your last comment, "Let's Notice it All and Report it All" is exactly why we will celebrate community partnerships (like the one we have with you) this week during National Night Out.  See www.mpdc.dc.gov/nno

Thank you all for your dedication to a cleaner and safer community and working relationship with MPD, as well as the Mayors Office of Community Relations (MOCRS.dc.gov).

One of my neighbors just told us that the bus stop at that intersection is
covered in blood. Also, when we came home last night there was a lot of police
activity on Bennett PL and the alley. Any info would be appreciated.

That party started at 4pm behind what the 1900 block of Bennett. I
called 911 to complain at 12.45am after 8 hours of noise, blaring
music, people blocking the alley. All I got from the woman that
answered the phone was"do you feel your life is in immediate danger?"
when I answered no but it had been going on for 8 hours and I could
hear the music through a brick wall and two closed door between me and
the rukus, she became indifferent and said she would dispatch an
officer, but I never saw one and it continued after I went to sleep
around 2am.

MPD KICKS OFF PHASE SIX OF ALL HANDS ON DECK

AND ANNOUNCES NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AND STIMULUS GRANT

(WASHINGTON, DC) — Today Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier today kicked off phase six of All Hands on Deck (AHOD), which coincides with the annual National Night Out Campaign, in which the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will rally community members throughout the District to join with neighbors and police officers in their PSAs to be a part of this year's event. In addition, Fenty and Lanier announced a $12 million stimulus grant recently awarded to MPD to expand community policing.

All Hands on Deck

AHOD began at 6 a.m. today and concludes at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5th. During AHOD Phase Six, residents will see an increased police presence in their neighborhoods and will be provided with educational literature explaining how to keep themselves and their communities safe. During AHOD Phase Six, every available sworn member will be on patrol.

During AHOD Phase I (April 24-26), Phase II (June 5-7), Phase III (June 26-28), Phase IV (July 10-12), and Phase V (July 24-26), MPD made a total of (2,391) arrests and seized more than $30,000 in drugs.

National Night Out

National Night Out (NNO) is an annual event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, which takes places tomorrow. Like previous years, MPD will encourage District residents to join with their neighbors, police officers and other community leaders in celebrating National Night Out. The citywide kickoff will begin tomorrow at 5 p.m. at the THEARC, 1901 Mississippi Avenue, S.E., with food, music, sports, games, crime prevention displays and other activities for participants of all ages.

In addition to the numerous activities taking place at the kickoff event, neighborhoods in all seven police districts have scheduled NNO events during the late afternoon and evening hours:

Good Afternoon Neighbors:

National Night Out is one of my favorite times of the year because residents in every part of the United States are empowered to take back our streets and enjoy walking in our communities. In keeping with the spirit of this worthy event, Commissioner India Henderson and I invite you to join us on the corner of 17th and L Street for a cool drink, at 7:00 p.m. Get out of the house for few moments and meet your neighbors and reaffirm your claim to your streets, for your enjoyment. We have a lot of really great neighbors in this community and we should all interact more often. You will also have the opportunity to meet some of the officers assigned to serve and protect our community. It's nice to meet our officers under calm circumstances instead of when they are responding to a call.

So, dress comfortably, bring a neighbor and come have a cool drink and meet other neighbors and your officers. We look forward to seeing you at 7:00 p.m., on the corner of 17th and L Streets, NE.

Sincerely,

Kathy Henderson

While I am not a spokesperson for the Guardian Angels, I feel confident that they will gladly help patrol your street. Are you willing to participate in neighborhood safety patrols on your street? If so, contact your neighbors and we will choose a mutually convenient date and gladly come and walk your street with you and your neighbors.

Your street has a lot of challenges, which I believe can be overcome with consistent attention. I have accompanied Commander Greene and his officers in going door to door to meet residents and identify issues; we are also working with rental property owners to abate conditions that allow crime and disorder to flourish. Citizen safety walks with Guardian Angels and our police will make a positive difference on Holbrook Street. As a long time (and long suffering) resident of the 1200 Block of Kirby Street, NW (nestled between First and Third Streets, running north above New York Avenue) I have come to realize that no matter what progressive civic attention is paid to the surrounding areas  of the Mt. Vernon Sq district in PSA 501, I have learned to not expect much in the way of effective improvement to the quality of life on this particular one-way street.

Its true that the random gang/drug related shootings and homicides have dropped significantly (if not completely) from the time I moved here some 19 years ago.  And thankfully the infamous crackhouse and its steady stream of crack head clientele have apparently finally moved on to other locales in the last few years.

But, this little block seems to remain a loud, trash strewn, rat infested, example of urban blight.  There is a persistent presence of non-residents who have made this their daily hang-out spot where they, among other things, smoke weed, drink liquor, smoke weed, wash their cars, traffic drugs, smoke weed, take up parking spaces, litter profusely, carouse, blast their car sterios, and variously loiter about with impunity, on a daily basis.  Despite late night calls to 311 when the racket keeps one from sleeping, the situation continues to go on unabated.

Kirby Street (particularly between Morgan and N Streets) seems to be the desired spot for The "Kirby Street Crew", as I call them.  These guys grew up in the neighborhood and though they no longer live there continues to hang out in the street (day and night), often smoking weed, imbibing on Henessy among other alcoholic beverages -- based on the many empty and broken bottles left behind along the sidewalks and tree beds.

The litter (and garbage) problem is extreme: everything from corner store fast food plastic containers, soda cans, candy wrappers, chicken bones, condom wrappers, and you name it.  The steady stream of trash and garbage piles up along the curb at a pace that is impossible to keep up by the weekly sanitation sweep provided by the city.  If there is an anti-litter law here, you would hardly know it living on Kirby Street.   All of this makes the neighborhood an irresistible magnet for rats -- which is why there seems to be a population explosion of rat infestation.

These are just a few of my frustrations as a resident on Kirby.

What I would like to see happen (my wish list):
  1. A "faux" crime watch camera conspicuously mounted within the proximity to dissuade crime.
  2. Official "QUIET ZONE" signs which include the text "No Loitering" and "No Soliciting".  See attached photo, taken on the 1300 block of Wallach Street, NW.
  3. More regular police presence during the late afternoon and evening hours.
  4. Committed enforcement of after-dark cessation of basketball court activity.
Thats all for now

Thank you to the 5D Officer who was out on Michigan Ave yesterday evening with a speed radar gun between 13th PL and 14th St.  I appreciate your efforts to slow down the commuter traffic, many of whom are trying to set land speed records in a 25MPH zone.

I had previously reported in this forum, an innocuous parking violation. To
many, it would have seemed `minor.' It was basically resolved ONLY through this
forum.

Through the daily reports published here, I see that it was FINALLY resolved.
The citizen's concern was validated.

So here's a real live success story of sorts. The `tool' works. If used
properly, a good `partnership' is ensured. TX AGAIN!

National Night Out for Boot and BK meant participating in events at Police Service Areas 105, 106, and 107 in SE DC.  Starting at 5 PM they reported to LT Durbin in the Dog Park at 5th & E (Marion park).  They checked out the free ice cream and mixed with the crowd, including a representative from the Mayor's Office..  Many of the residents brought their pets, and two of the dogs even put on an unarmed combat demonstration. One even showed off its Mike Tyson ear technique with its opponent.
At 7 PM the pair reported to LT Euhle at Peter Buggs Shoe Repair and BBQ Pit at 13th & E.  Assistant Chief Groomes thanked the Angels for their community work, and asked for Unique.  She had to accept the excuse that he was with Chief Lanier at a separate function.  Residents, Angels, Police Officers, and the Orange Hat Neighborhood Patrol enjoyed the harmonica playing and singing of both LT Euhle (stage name "Danny Blue") and recording artist Charlie Sales, as they munched on hot dogs, hamburgers, and watermelon.  A high point of the event was the surprise arrival of a firetruck with lights flashing and sirens screaming.  Perched atop were police officers dressed as Batman and Spiderman.  They passed out candy and delighted the kids, including Boot and BK.
