The scary thing is other neighbors around 4-5 AM experienced other attempts on their property. Where either their yards or sheds were broken into or attempted to be broken into.

One major tip remove the suction cup for the GPS.

It's all resolved now I am poorer, but no body got hurt and I was able to go to work until about 8. Joy of Joys.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, Robby, but appreciate your sharing.  And thanks, Fayette, for the good preventative advice and links!

These crimes-- and their motives-- can be pretty random ... ranging from theft to mean-spirited vandalism.  But the perps can be pretty sophisticated, too... even really, disciplined, focused pros.

Last year, I had our truck, an Avalanche, parked in front of the house on a pretty busy pedestrian-traveled street -- close to the Metro, on a sunny, early afternoon, middle of the week.

Around 2 pm, a perp picked the driver's door lock (as it showed obvious scratch marks).  Parked on the right, it was closest to the middle of the street, so his back was to any pedestrians across the street, and the truck itself, blocked a view of him from the near sidewalk.

Once in the truck, he opened the middle console top-- and the glove compartment-- but not really rifling through either.  He quickly liberated maybe 5 or 6 bucks worth of change in the Chevy-built-in change storage rack in the console, and then went on his merry way.  He left an easy-to-grab $60 retail iPod FM transmitter in the power port.

I thoought it out a bit afterwards.  I don't know what I'd do to prevent that -- other than not park there again.  The perp probably knew of the Chevy's built-in console coin storage, and knows it's probably an easy, fast haul, with little risk.  If I hadn't left money in there, he might have smashed a window out of spite.  I considered myself, lucky, as the lock still worked, and touch-up paint took care of the scratches.  Plus who's gonna report 5 or 6 bucks?

The built-in coin storage may be a real convenience to suburban truck, van or SUV owners.  But it's also an open invitation to pro criminals in an urban environment.  (Fear and loathing in the Chevy showroom, next time, huh?)

Hello:

There is a PSA 504 Planning/Brainstormthis Wednesday, September 24th, at the Trinidad Recreation Center  from 6:30-8:00 PM.  When I announced the PSA meeting Friday, I wrote the wrong date for the planning meeting. The meeting is This Wednesday not next Wednesday.

The purpose of these meetings is to assist MPD 5D in the planning of the next PSA 504 meeting, to develop agenda items that raise issues related to crime within the PSA, and to work with MPD to develop community based strategies to mitigate and prevent crime within the PSA.

The last PSA 504 meeting was a rousing success.

The Trinidad Recreation Center is located at 1310 Childress Street NE, Washington, DC 20002.

We hope to see you there,

Again last night/early this morning at 5:04am (I checked the clock
this time) then again at 7am a series of five loud "pops" same as over
the weekend. This time coming from the general direction of 4th and
Channing.

It sounds like gunshots but in very rapid succession. The odd thing is
that it has been very quiet before the "pops" and very quiet after.
No sounds of people or cars speeding away. At this point I'm not
sure what the noise is - it's not fireworks - but it is very
disturbing and sounds like gunshots to us. :-(

Perhaps some (fill in the blank) was walking around/driving through
Brookland then up Lincoln toward Rhode Island Avenue occasionally
shooting off a gun. Not sure it helps but in case it does thought I'd
chime in.

The First National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial 5K Race
(WASHINGTON, DC) - Every day, law enforcement officers put
their lives on the line for the safety and protection of others. On
Sunday, October 19, 2008, the community has a chance to show its
appreciation for officers' service and sacrifice by participating in
the "Race to Remember"-the first National Law Enforcement Officers
Memorial 5K.

Organized by the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, DC,
the race begins at 8:30 a.m., at the National Law Enforcement
Officers Memorial in downtown DC. The event benefits the National
Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, a DC-based not-for-profit
that honors U.S. law enforcement, in particular officers who have
died in the line of duty.

The 5K course spans the streets of our Nation's Capital, taking
runners past such cherished landmarks as the U.S. Capitol, Supreme
Court, Library of Congress and the National Mall. Transponder timing
operated by Capital Running Company will be used to score the 5K
race. A variety of prizes, including unique law enforcement-related
merchandise, will be awarded, and there will be refreshments and
give-aways.

The Memorial Fund maintains the National Law Enforcement Officers
Memorial, which contains the names of 18,274 officers who have died
in the line of duty throughout U.S. history. All proceeds from
the "Race To Remember" benefit the Memorial Fund's latest project-
creation of the first-ever National Law Enforcement Museum
(www.LawEnforcementMuseum.org), which will be located adjacent to
the Memorial in Washington, DC's Judiciary Square.

We see that the jump out or some other squad placed several of the
young men that deal and congregate at 1826 3rd St NE under arrest.
There have been numerous issues with the property and the owner is non-
responsive. I wanted to send a big "thank you" and also inform you that
whenever a search of the property is done, be mindful to search the
detached garage/carport at the back side of the house (dark brown

that is where numerous transactions take place. After your squads left,

Subject: "Fireworks Neighborhood Safety Act of 2008" Bill 17-0325
dcpoisonivy
Send Email Send Email

Good Morning All:

Several of my neighbors and I attended the public hearing on September 24, 2008, to support the passage of Bill 17-0325:

"To prohibit the use, sale, storage and display of fireworks in the District of Columbia except in certain instances; to provide for civil penalties for possession or sale of fireworks; to provide for enforcement of this act the Fire Chief and the Chief of Police, and to make conforming amendments."

Fire and EMS Chief Rubin offered compelling testimony that all fireworks are dangerous, including providing a video presentation of a little boy that was killed when a typical firework hit the child on the head from forty feet away. Neither the child nor his parents were using fireworks at the time of this horrific accident. A sparkler burns at 1200 degrees Fahrenheit and even though they are legal are quite dangerous.

Some have stated that the really dangerous fireworks are already illegal, so we should just focus on enforcing those. The problem with this argument is the fact that there is a 14-page list of fireworks that are "legal," presenting an almost impossible task for police and Fire and EMS personnel to enforce. How practical is it for police and fire personnel to report to calls for service with a 14-page list in hand, attempting to ascertain which fireworks are legal? Banning all fireworks except professional displays will help our fire and police personnel enforce the law and protect public safety.

Many on this listserv complained about the endless noise, flying incendiary material, resulting litter and acrid smoke fumes from the discharge of fireworks, which clearly undermine public safety. You testified here as we did at the hearing about the fireworks deliberately aimed at your cars, homes, property and your person. July 4th will be upon us again and the nightmare will be palpable once more. Do not wait to complain then; we must act now to encourage Councilmember Mendelson to move Bill 17-0325 out of his committee for a full Council vote.

Commissioner Henderson and I are a circulating a petition in our community in support of Bill 17-0325. We believe that fireworks as they are currently used violate public safety, creating an unwelcome intrusion in our communities. If you agree and I know that many of you do, I urge you to contact Councilmember Mendelson at (202) 724-8064 and tell him to move Bill 17-0325 out of his committee for a full Council vote. The record will remain open for two weeks from September 24, 2008. Do not wait; you must act quickly to demand relief. Do you really want to spend another July 4th hearing the discharge of endless fireworks, smelling the fumes, seeing the sparks and flames and cleaning up the litter afterwards?

Sincerely,

Kathy Henderson
