Did 5-D do this as well? I'm concerned that there is rarely any traffic on this
listserv when there are dozens of messages from the Commander of the First
District.

Exactly what is going on in this District?

Brooklanders,

There was yet another mugging in Brookland last evening. Phillip Johnson was
mugged while leaving the Metro station. He was followed by three teenage
males who approached him near 10th and Monroe, pushed him down, punched him
several times and stole his wallet out of his pocket. They apparently took the
cash and credit cards from the wallet and left the wallet on the ground. They
later charged a tank of gas at a gas station near PG Plaza. Phillip called the
police who took a report.

Bill

P.S.: Has anyone seen the police patrolling the Metro station area lately?

I had two white females from "Firstline" security come by my home (and
others' on my street too) in PSA 504 on the 3rd. I happened to come onto
the front porch and saw one of them standing there looking at my house.
Startled, I asked who they were and then asked them to leave my property.
Instead of leaving, one of them started going into a sales pitch. I firmly
reiterated that she should leave NOW, and that I would take action should
they continue to trespass. They left, grumbling as they went down the
street.

The interesting thing is that the sales pitch included, "I hope your phone
lines don't get cut, because our security system uses cell phone technology
and others don't. A lot of phone lines have been cut in the area so
burglars can break in without the police knowing. With our system... etc
etc"

There have been three robberies in the Brookland Area. How each robbery
happened has been similar. The suspects have run up behind the victim
and say "Give me your money" at the same time they are pushing the
victim to the ground. The suspects are described as black males, 17-25
years of age. We have seen this pattern of robbery over the last
several weeks. The detectives are working with the victims who can
identify the suspects. PSA 502 has increased their patrols of the area
and has contacted Metro Police to have them step up their patrol of the
Brookland Station.

If anyone has any information regarding these robberies they can call
the Fifth District Detectives (202) 698-0660 or Lt. Gregory Stroud (202)

Why was there no MPD presence at the NY Avenue "blockade" at the Montana
Avenue intersection this afternoon at lunchtime? Westbound traffic was backed up
to the South Dakota Avenue exit all because of a broken down tanker truck in the
right hand lane and the traffic camera "repair crew" directly across from the
tanker blocking the left hand lane. Three lanes of traffic were having to merge
into a SINGLE lane? Repairing the camera can't be that important that they have
to do it while the tanker truck awaits a tow truck. So instead hundreds are
inconvenienced instead of one camera repairman.

Makes a lot of sense huh?

Cmdr. Greene:

I very much appreciate the info below that there have been 3 robberies with
similar tactics and perps description. But is there any more specfic physical
description than 17-25 black males? Because that could be any group of 100's of
groups of kids around here and i surely don't want to be avaoid every group of 3
boys (or 2 if one is missing, or 4 if a frined is hanging with them) I see --
three 17-25 black males could be my friend's kids 5 blocks away, my next door
neighbor's boys, the set that just walked down my street... Anything such as
style of dress, tall/short/skinny, braids/close cropped hair, tatoos, etc. would
be appreciaited. Thanks

identify the suspects.

VIOLENCE!

Brooklanders,

There was yet another mugging in Brookland last evening. Phillip Johnson
was
mugged while leaving the Metro station. He was followed by three teenage

males who approached him near 10th and Monroe, pushed him down, punched
him
several times and stole his wallet out of his pocket. They apparently
took the
cash and credit cards from the wallet and left the wallet on the ground.
They
later charged a tank of gas at a gas station near PG Plaza. Phillip
called the
police who took a report.

Bill

P.S.: Has anyone seen the police patrolling the Metro station area
lately?

Anything can be an opportunity for criminal perps. The confidence level
is naturally, "high" for security people and systems alike. Everything
and everyone close to one's home, business and loved ones deserves
special scrutiny. Here's a cautionary excerpt from an article on home
security systems...

A Cat Burglar's Guide to Protecting Your Home

I have spent most of my career stealing from people just like you. I was
a member of the "Dinner Set" burglary ring for a dozen years. We stole
about $70 million in jewelry -- for which I spent 11 years in prison. No
one is better qualified to tell you that most people don't do enough to
protect their homes...

Mistake #2: Posting detailed alarm signs. Don't display signs that
identify the alarm company. Burglars can buy information on how the
systems are wired -- and how to bypass specific versions.

Better: Buy signs at home-supply stores that read, This house is
protected by an alarm system. As long as it doesn't give specific
information, it can be a good deterrent.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) would like to hear from the Gay,
Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) community before finalizing any plans
to enhance MPD's liaison units. MPD is engaging the public in the development of
these units, with the ultimate goal of increasing citywide access to these
units.

Over the next few weeks, there will be group meetings in the GLBT community to
solicit input in all seven police districts. These meetings will help the
Department gather perceptions of MPD and hear concerns about the services MPD
provides to members of the GLBT community. The information from these meetings
will be incorporated into a final plan for enhancements to the GLLU.

Details about the dates and times of the GLLU-specific meetings are provided
below, as well as in the attached public flyer; feel free to distribute it to

The Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, DC (MPDC) and
Crimereports.com have teamed up to keep District of Columbia
residents informed about crime in your community. Our mission is
simple: provide an easy – and free – way for you to receive regular
emails from the MPDC about neighborhood crime, as well as other
information and events of interest. Sign up today by visiting
www.crimereports.com.

Frequently Asked Questions about Crimereports.com

1. What is Crimereports.com?

Crimereports.com provides software and services to law enforcement
agencies to improve collaboration between the police and members of
the local community. We believe that an open, continuous dialogue
with the community is a key component of community policing and
fighting crime. The MPDC has been a partner with Crimereports.com
since July 1999, and is the largest agency that participates in the
program.

2. I'm a District resident. What type of information does
      Crimereports.com provide?

Five days a week, the MPDC produces a summary of all serious
("Index") crimes recently reported in each of the seven police
districts in DC. These summaries are posted to the Crimereports.com
Web site and are simultaneously emailed to all subscribers to each
police district's mailing list. In addition to the crime summaries,
the MPDC uses the service to send out a weekly e-newsletter, as well
as periodic neighborhood crime alerts, data on wanted suspects and
information about new police programs and services.

3. How much does it cost?

Currently, Crimereports.com's services are free to both residents
and the Metropolitan Police Department. The service does not rely on
government grants or tax dollars. Crimereports.com will become
sustainable, and perhaps profitable, by teaming up with sponsors or
other partners who are interested in providing this information to
the public.

4. How do I subscribe to Crimereports.com?

On the Internet, go to www.crimereports.com and click on the link
for Washington, DC. Identify the specific police districts for which
you want to receive reports (you can sign up for one district,
several districts or all seven) and complete the remainder of the
subscription process. It's that easy.

5. How do I change my free subscription?

Once you have joined a Crimereports.com list, you can easily change
your subscription – add a list, remove a list, etc. – at any time by
visiting www.crimereports.com and clicking on Subscriber Login.
Follow the easy-to-use steps for changing your subscription.

6. Do you expect to expand your offerings?

Yes. We hope to offer a wide range of communications that you choose
with your local police. Crimereports.com envisions that almost every
person wants to receive some information from his or her police
department. We want to provide the type of information you need, at
the frequency you prefer. If you have ideas about what information
you would like to see the MPDC provide to DC residents, please call
(202) 727-9346 or email Kevin Morison, MPDC's Director of Corporate
Communications.

Thanks, but this still does not substitute for the citizen-MPD interaction
that is severely lacking on this listserv.

Does Commander Greene monitor this at all?

Subject: [MPD-5D] Get Email Updates on Neighborhood Crime

The Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, DC (MPDC) and
Crimereports.com have teamed up to keep District of Columbia
residents informed about crime in your community. Our mission is
simple: provide an easy - and free - way for you to receive regular
emails from the MPDC about neighborhood crime, as well as other
information and events of interest. Sign up today by visiting
www.crimereports.com.

Frequently Asked Questions about Crimereports.com

1. What is Crimereports.com?

Crimereports.com provides software and services to law enforcement
agencies to improve collaboration between the police and members of
the local community. We believe that an open, continuous dialogue
with the community is a key component of community policing and
fighting crime. The MPDC has been a partner with Crimereports.com
since July 1999, and is the largest agency that participates in the
program.

2. I'm a District resident. What type of information does
Crimereports.com provide?

Five days a week, the MPDC produces a summary of all serious
("Index") crimes recently reported in each of the seven police
districts in DC. These summaries are posted to the Crimereports.com
Web site and are simultaneously emailed to all subscribers to each
police district's mailing list. In addition to the crime summaries,
the MPDC uses the service to send out a weekly e-newsletter, as well
as periodic neighborhood crime alerts, data on wanted suspects and
information about new police programs and services.

3. How much does it cost?

Currently, Crimereports.com's services are free to both residents
and the Metropolitan Police Department. The service does not rely on
government grants or tax dollars. Crimereports.com will become
sustainable, and perhaps profitable, by teaming up with sponsors or
other partners who are interested in providing this information to
the public.

4. How do I subscribe to Crimereports.com?

On the Internet, go to www.crimereports.com and click on the link
for Washington, DC. Identify the specific police districts for which
you want to receive reports (you can sign up for one district,
several districts or all seven) and complete the remainder of the
subscription process. It's that easy.

5. How do I change my free subscription?

Once you have joined a Crimereports.com list, you can easily change
your subscription - add a list, remove a list, etc. - at any time by
visiting www.crimereports.com and clicking on Subscriber Login.
