Alright now!! I will be in the house!! Way to go guys!! Andy, Is anyone getting the Champs award in 5D?

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life, as by the obstacles which one has overcome while trying to succeed.

Can we get someone to send parking enforcement or the police to the corner lot
(by lot I mean a place only large enough for a house) at 1st and O St NW which
has turned into a parking lot for the Dunbar construction workers. This morning
there is literally someone parked on the sidewalk. You can see from the mug
tracks that people drive all over the sidewalk on O st and 1st St.

It is going to take one of the little kids from the elementary school across the
street getting hit before something is done?

People driving on the sidewalks seems like a public safety issue to me.

To all:

Thank you, Captain Beach, for reminding all readers to call 311 for any type of service that may require non-emergency intervention from other city agencies.

We also ask that for any request you have for police service, you should call 911 as your primary method of reaching us, rather than emailing, texting, or using any other form of communication.  911 is the most direct route to access police service, and we do not want residents to rely on email and other means of communication, as these may take longer to get us there.

These types requests should be made to 3-1-1 so as we can chart and track calls for service and review quality of life issues per Patrol Service Areas.  This assignment has been acknowledged by 5D and I have PSA Cruiser 5014 on the scene assessing the situation right now.  We will also attempt to contact the lots owner and see if this is a case where parking is allowed or in the case where the owner is unaware of workers parking on his/her property, it would be on the owner to request we ticket violators and the owner would then authorize towing from his/her private property.

MPD does not have the authority to ticket/tow on private property with the owner/leaseholder present.

DPW To Observe Presidents Day, Mon., Feb. 18

Sanitation And Parking Enforcement Services To Be Suspended That Day

The DC Department of Public Works announced today how services will be affected Presidents Day, Monday, February 18, when the District observes the holiday.  Trash and recycling collections and parking enforcement will be suspended. All services will resume Tuesday, February 19.

Trash/recycling collections:  Trash and recycling collections in once-a-week collection neighborhoods will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week.  In neighborhoods with twice-weekly trash collections, Monday and Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday, and Tuesday and Friday collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday.

Ft. Totten: Ft. Totten Transfer Station, located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, will be closed to the public February 18.  It will reopen Tuesday, February 19.  Residents may bring trash and bulk items between 1 pm and 5 pm.  The next Saturday household hazardous waste/e-cycling/document shredding drop-off day is March 2, 8 am to 3 pm, (these services are available the first Saturday of the month, except holidays).

To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the Saturday drop-off, DPW accepts household hazardous waste and e-cyclables only the Thursday before the first Saturday of the month (February 28, from 1 pm to 5 pm).  DPW will not accept personal documents for shredding on Thursdays because they cannot be secured until the contractor arrives on Saturday.

Directions to Ft. Totten:  Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street.

Parking Enforcement: DPW will suspend enforcement of parking meters, residential parking, and rush hour lane restrictions on Presidents Day.  DPW also will suspend towing abandoned vehicles.  Enforcement resumes Tuesday, February 19.

The Metropolitan Police Department's Fifth Police District was dispatched this
morning to the 1300 block of New York Avenue NE for a pedestrian that was struck
by an automobile, which remained on the scene and the operator was cooperating
with law enforcement. As a result of injuries sustained by the adult
pedestrian, life-saving measures initiated at MedStar could not sustain life and
the victim was pronounced dead.

Detective Harley of the Special Operations Division, Major Crash Unit responded
to scene in the 1300 block of New York Avenue NE and will be handling the
investigation of this pedestrian fatality. This is the fourth (4th) pedestrian
fatality within the District of Columbia in calendar year 2013.

Traffic restrictions were initiated as part of MPD processing the crash scene
and as of this posting, all lanes are now open and traffic is flowing freely.

Based upon the fact that there is alot of preliminary investigative findings to
be determined, no final determination as to fault has been made.

Good day Commissioner Lewis: Besides what have already been posted on the
ListServ, is there anything specific you are looking for? The scene was
processed by MPD's Major Crash Unit, which is a subset of Traffic Safety and
Special Enforcement Branch. Due to the fact there was a fatality, Major Crash is
responsible for investigating the scene. With that being said, any additional
information that has not already been divulged will have to wait until they
complete their investigation.

It can't be legal to drive up over the curb and sidewalk to park in this parcel
of land. Isn't that something the police can do something about? There is no
curb cut on this property

Residential Street Sweeping To Begin Mar. 1

The 2013 residential street sweeping season begins Friday, March 1, announced the DC Department of Public Works today.  Signs are posted that identify the days of the week and hours of the day when parking restrictions will be enforced so the sweepers can clean the streets effectivelyParking enforcement of residential sweeping violations will begin Monday, March 11, to give motorists a few days to get used to the parking restrictions.

“The residential street sweeping program is among our most successful operations to keep DC streets clean,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr.  “We have expanded it over the years to accommodate more and more residents willing to move their cars to allow the sweepers access to the curb lane where debris and pollutants collect.  We also want to make sure commuters and visitors are aware that the parking restriction applies to all motorists and a $30 ticket can be issued for violating the restriction.”

Mr. Howland noted that beginning in 2012, DPW established March 1 through October 31 as residential street sweeping season and this information appears on the signs posted where the program is in effect.

He cautioned motorists to avoid parking along sweeping routes before that day’s restriction ends.  “A supervisor follows behind the sweeper and may require the block to be swept again, so no one should park until the end of the posted sweeping period,” he said.

Beginning March 11, parked cars also may be towed to allow the sweepers access to the curbside. Generally, parking is prohibited for two hours while sweeping is underway.

DPW street sweepers cover about 4,000 lane miles monthly, removing litter and pollutants by brushing them onto a conveyor system, which transports the material into a debris hopper. The sweeper also emits a fine spray of water to help control dust.  In addition to sweeping residential streets during spring, summer and fall, DPW also sweeps commercial streets overnight year-round, and parking restrictions also apply.
