mpd5d_coordi...
Send Email Send Email

Good Morning, please share the following with your friends and neighbors

(Washington, DC) The District Snow Team (Department of Public Works and District
Department of Transportation) has 200 plows that are on their routes at this
time. Major streets, bridges and elevated structures have been pre-treated with
a brine/beet juice mixture to help prevent snow from sticking to the pavement.
The weather forecast calls for possibility of up to one inch of accumulated
snow.

"Unlike previous snow events this season, roadway temperatures are well below
freezing so snow likely will be on the ground during morning rush hour," said
DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. "We want motorists, bicyclists and
pedestrians to be especially cautious as they travel throughout the District in
the early morning. This is important since so many people leave the house for
work and school before daybreak."

Snow Safety and Preparedness Tips: People driving, walking or bicycling around
the District should travel cautiously. Property owners are asked clear their
sidewalks of snow within 24 hours of the end of the storm, and assist their
elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing their sidewalks. Also, for our
drivers' safety, "Don't crowd the plow." Residents are encouraged to go to
snow.dc.gov for updates before, during and after snowstorms, and for tips to get
one's home and family prepared for inclement weather. Residents also may sign up
at alert.dc.gov to receive emergency alerts and notifications from Alert DC.
Protective actions / Please drive with caution, roadways may be icy, drive with
caution over bridges, overpasses and tunnels.

Does anyone have information on an attempted assualt that recently
occured near the Brookland metro (within the past week)? I believe
that it was thwarted by some Catholic University students. I do not
remember seeing it posted on the daily digest and was wondering if
this was reported to the police?

If so, did this incident make it into one of our daily digests and I
just missed it due to other postings? Or did it occur in a bordering
district and not get reported in our digest?

Thanks for the help
Paul

What steps are being taken to address these incidents? Will we get regular patrols, extra patrols or a targeted response plan to address robberies in this area?

DC Snow Team Continues Deployment Thru Up Coming Winter Storm, Jan. 25

Team Is Treating Residential Streets On Thursday.;

Forecast Calls For 1-2 inches Of Snow By Late Friday Night.

The District Snow Team (Department of Public Works and District Department of Transportation) is treating residential streets following today’s snowfall and monitoring major streets in anticipation of tomorrow’s winter storm.  The forecast calls for snow to begin falling Friday afternoon, continuing through late Friday night, with a predicted accumulation of one to two inches.  The District will deploy about 200 plows starting Friday afternoon.

“Thursday’s pre-dawn snowfall brought about one inch of snow,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr.  “We followed our plan of simultaneously treating the major routes, such as Suitland Parkway, Pennsylvania Avenue and Georgia Avenue, along with 82 residential routes that are particularly challenging during a snow storm,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr.  “We will focus our attention Thursday on all residential streets, which will allow us to get ahead of tomorrow’s storm.”

Director Howland added that refreezing is likely; therefore, the Snow Team will continue to treat streets Thursday into Friday to help keep the streets clear during the afternoon and morning rush hour periods.

Snow Safety and Preparedness Tips:  People driving, walking or bicycling around the District should travel cautiously. Property owners are asked to pre-treat their sidewalks with abrasives and remove snow within 24 hours of the end of the storm, and assist their elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing their sidewalks. Also, for plow drivers’ safety, “Don’t crowd the plow.”  Residents are encouraged to go to snow.dc.gov for updates before, during and after snowstorms, and for tips to get one’s home and family prepared for inclement weather.  Residents also may sign up at alert.dc.gov to receive emergency alerts and notifications from Alert DC.

To track the plows, go to snow.dc.gov and click on http://snowmap.dc.gov/.

Paul

As I recall we did make an arrest following the assault.  It occurred at 14th and Otis NE.  The suspect grabbed a young lady's buttocks and began assaulting her.  Two citizens saw this and as they approached he fled.  MPD officers were able to stop him and he was subsequently arrested for both crimes.

On 1/24/13 at approximately 2310 hours Complainant-1 was working as the evening
clerk at the BP Gas Station located at 1376 Florida Ave NE when he unlocked and
opened the front door to let in the night clerk. As the night clerk entered,
three masked suspects ran in behind him. Once inside, the suspects punched C-1
about the head, took currency from the cash register and fled out of the front
door. At that exact time, a Robbery unit in an unmarked vehicle was passing by
the gas station and observed the three masked suspects exit the gas station
office and start running. The Robbery units pursued the suspects and, without
losing sight of them, captured all three a short distance away from the gas
station. Recovered nearby was the US currency taken from the cash register.
Subjects were placed under arrest Great Job by the RIP (robbery) Unit!

Fabulous job of the RIP (Robbery) Unit!!  Truly a timely event for the robbery unit to be in the area at the time of the incident.  Thanks to the unit for being observant of that area.

Paul

Thanks, LT and Caroline for nailing this down for us. We are rightly always concerned about pedestrians on the "gateway streets" to and from 5D's Metro Stations.

The point being, pedestrians and MPD patrols alike can never be too watchful and prepared for criminal perpetrators tempted to take advantage of, and do harm to the high concentration of Metro pedestrians in these neighborhoods.

Traffic Fatality: 1200 Block of Southern Avenue, SE

(Washington, DC)-Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit are investigating the traffic fatality which occurred in the 1200 block of Southern Avenue, SE.

On Friday, January 25, 2013, at approximately 2:35 pm, a 2003 Dodge Caravan was traveling in the 1200 block of Southern Avenue when it collided several times with the rear of a Honda Accord pushing it out of the travel lane.  The Caravan continued to travel and impacted with the rear of a DC Fire Department ambulance causing the Caravan to flip onto its roof and catch fire.  The collision also caused the ambulance to collide with the rear of a Toyota Prius which caused the Toyota Prius to collide with the rear of a Chevrolet Avalanche.  DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded, extinguished the fire, and located an adult female inside the caravan, who did not show any signs consistent with life.  Five other individuals involved in the crashes were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
