DPW Is Suspending Trash/Recycling Collections, Residential Street Sweeping, Parking Enforcement

The DC Department of Public Works announced today that due to the closing of DC government Tuesday, October 30, it is suspending trash and recycling collections, bulk trash collections, parking enforcement and residential street sweeping.

Trash/recycling collections:  1. Residents living in once-a-week collections neighborhoods are asked to hold onto their trash and recyclables until next Tuesday, when normal collections will be made.  2.  Residents living in twice-a-week collections neighborhoods whose recycling is collected on Tuesdays are asked to hold onto their recyclables until next Tuesday.  These residents’ trash will be collected on Friday.  Residents whose recycling is collected on Friday, their recyclables will be collected.

Bulk Trash Collections:  Bulk collections originally scheduled for October 29th have been rescheduled for November 8th.  Bulk collections originally scheduled for October 30th have been rescheduled for November 16th.

Residential Street Sweeping:  Street sweeping in signed residential neighborhoods will resume March 1.  Sweeping was suspended this week to allow the crews to clear storm debris, and the end of this program is October 31.  Therefore, motorists do not need to obey the parking restrictions on Tuesday or Wednesday.  Street sweeping will resume March 1.

Ft. Totten Transfer Station:  The Ft. Totten Transfer Station will be closed to residents Tuesday.

Parking enforcement:  DPW will not enforce parking meters, am and pm rush hour, residential permit parking or street sweeping restrictions on Tuesday.

To report all outages, downed trees and to make non-emergency services requests, call 311/202-737-4404 or use the 311 App.  All emergency calls should be made to 911.

HHW/E-Cycling/Shredding On Sat., Nov. 3, 8am-3pm, Ft. Totten Transfer Station

The Department of Public Works announced today its monthly Household Hazardous Waste/E-Cycling/Personal Document Shredding drop-off is Saturday, November 3, between 8 am and 3 pm at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station.  District residents may bring toxic items, such as pesticides, batteries and cleaning fluids to Ft. Totten, along with computers, televisions and other unwanted electronic equipment.  Personal document shredding also is available that day and residents may bring up to five boxes of materials to be shredded.  No business or commercial material will be accepted.

To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the Saturday drop-off, DPW will accept household hazardous waste and e-cyclables only on the Thursday before the first Saturday of the month (November 1, from 1 pm to 5 pm) at Ft. Totten.  While DPW normally offers personal document shredding during the Saturday event, items for shredding cannot be accepted on Thursdays because these documents cannot be protected until the shredding contractor arrives on Saturday.

For a list of all household hazardous waste and e-cyclables accepted by DPW, please click on the HHW link at www.dpw.dc.gov.

Directions to Ft. Totten:  Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street.

DPW Collecting Spoiled Food At Four Sites; Removing Storm Debris

The DC Department of Public Works announced today that in addition to resuming its regular trash and recycling collections for the remainder of this week, employees will be located at the following sites between 3 pm and 7 pm, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, October 31-November 2 to collect spoiled food.  Hurricane Sandy closed District government Monday and Tuesday; therefore, trash collections were not made those days so DPW is providing this additional service.  Trucks will be positioned at each site to receive spoiled food only.

1.      Fort Stevens Recreation Center

1327 Van Buren Street, NW

2.      Wilson High School

3950 Chesapeake Street, NW

3.      Trinidad Recreation Center

1310 Childress Street, NE

4.      Kelly Miller Middle School

4900 Brooks Street, NE

DPW will continue to remove storm debris from residential areas through Friday, November 2.   Leaf collection season begins Monday, November 5.  Residents are asked to do the following:

1.      If hiring a tree specialist or landscaping company to cut up fallen trees and limbs, please have your contractor remove all the debris, limbs and branches.

2.      DPW will remove from the treebox space(s) in front of residents’ homes, branches that are cut into 4’ lengths and tied into bundles no more than 2’ in diameter. These items can be placed where the residents’ trash is collected or they may bring them to the Ft. Totten Transfer Station, 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, weekdays between 1 pm and 5 pm, or Saturday, between 8 am and 3 pm. Directions to Ft. Totten:  Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Road, NE and continue to the end of the street.

3.      Please place debris, bagged or loose, in the treebox space*, not the gutter or street so the gutters can remain clear. Do not include rocks, stones or concrete.

*        If you do not have a treebox, place the debris adjacent to the curb but NOT in the gutter or street.

who is the best resource to contact regarding an apparent vacant house? The
house directly adjacent to our house has some movement in and out, but no one

run down, and does not appear to be secure. Most recently, one of the front

The DC Department of Public Works announced today that it will begin collecting leaves Monday, November 5 and will continue collections through January 12, 2013.  DPW will be in each neighborhood at least twice for two weeks collecting leaves during the season.  To ensure leaves are collected, residents are asked to check the schedule for their neighborhood and get their leaves ready for collection the weekend before each collection cycle.  Earlier this month, DPW mailed a collection schedule to residents whose trash and recycling are collected by DPW.  That schedule also can be found at www.dpw.dc.gov.

“We will collect leaves from every residential street in the District,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr.  “This is our most labor-intensive operation, involving more than 200 people working six days a week, including Veterans Day (observed Monday, November 12) and Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 22).”

He advised residents to rake loose leaves into the treeboxes, not into the street, and DPW crews will vacuum the leaves, which will be composted.  “We also will collect bagged leaves left in the treeboxes and they, too, will be composted,” he added.  Last year DPW composted almost 6,000 tons of leaves.  The free compost is available to residents for pick up between March and October at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station.

“Collecting leaves is a public safety function,” said Mr. Howland.  “Wet or dry leaves can cause pedestrians to fall and cars to skid.  Leaves can block catch basins, which can lead to flooding.  Leaves raked into the street, rather than the treebox, reduce available parking spaces.  Starting a car parked over dry leaves can cause them to ignite.”

DPW will collect holiday trees between December 31 and January 12.  Residents should remove ornaments before placing the trees where their trash and recycling are collected.

Here are some tips for a smooth-running leaf collection season:

·         Look up your street’s collection schedule in the leaf collection brochure or at http://leaf.dcgis.dc.gov/.

·         Rake leaves into the treebox the weekend before your street’s collection cycles.  If you don’t have a treebox, leaves should be placed adjacent to the curb but NOT in the gutter or the street.

·         Please – leaves only! Tree limbs, bricks, dirt, rocks, etc., will damage the equipment and delay collections.

·         If you choose to bag your leaves, place the bags in the treebox or next to the trash/recycling container(s).

·         Drive slowly around our crews’ work area so no one gets hurt.

Leaf collection season coincides with the beginning of snow season.  Mr. Howland said, “I want to remind residents that the leaf collection crews are the backbone of the snow removal program.  When snow and/or ice are predicted, we stop collecting leaves to convert our leaf equipment to snow plows.   No leaves are collected until after the snow event ends.  Sometimes predictions don’t result in snow, but we must have our snow equipment on the street regardless.”

Why didn't the homicide that happened at 4th and V not show up under PSA 502?

Are these handled in a special way or something?

Person of Interest Sought in an Assault with Intent to Commit a Sex Offense: 2300 Block of Washington Place, NE

The Metropolitan Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating a person of interest in connection with an assault with intent to commit a sex offense.

On Friday, October 26, 2012 at approximately 1:53 pm, a male suspect knocked on an apartment door located in the 2300 block of Washington Place, NE.  An adult female victim started to open the door when the suspect forced his way into the apartment and attempted to sexually assault the victim.  A struggle ensued and the victim was stabbed multiple times before the suspect fled the location.

A person of interest is shown in this video: http://youtu.be/zFYHCwFNNrI

Anyone with information that can assist in the identification of the person of interest is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.

It is important to take preventive measures against break-ins.  Strong locks – and good neighbors who look out for one another – can be effective deterrents to burglars.  Here are a few tips that can help you keep you and your property safe and secure:

1.                   Make sure every external door is metal or solid wood and has a strong, well-installed dead bolt lock.  Key-in-the-knob locks alone are not enough.

2.                   Sliding glass doors offer easy access to burglars if they are not properly secured.  You can secure them by putting a broomstick or dowel in the inside track to jam the door, or by installing commercially available locks.  To prevent the door being lifted off the track, drill a hole through the sliding door frame and the fixed frame.  Then insert a pin in the hole.

3.                   Never leave windows unlocked or opened when you are away from your home.

4.                   Never hide keys around the outside of your home.  Instead, try giving your extra key to a neighbor you trust.

5.                   When you move into a new house or apartment, re-key the locks.

6.                   Install a home burglar alarm.

If you see or hear something out of the ordinary, contact the police immediately.  In the past, the information given to members of the police department by concerned residents and citizens has contributed to the closure of several criminal casesCitizen information and tips are extremely useful and necessary for thorough police investigationsPlease forward this information to your friends and neighborsThank you for your continued assistance in strengthening the communities.

Why didn't the homicide that happened at 4th and V not show up under PSA 502?

Are these handled in a special way or something?

At about 6:45 this morning, Friday, November 2, police were called to a home in the 3500 block of 17th St., NE, for a possible assault.  When officers arrived, one of our 5D officers was attacked by a suspect with a knife.  The officer was assaulted, and in defending himself shot the suspect, who died at the scene.

The officer received several stab wounds.  He has been released from the hospital and is doing well.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers that have arrived at 5D this morning.
